Brian Boyle...a wasted Phil Kessel?
New York Post writer has an article based on how he feels that trading the third round pick from 2010 cost the Rangers the chance at acquiring Boston's RFA Phil Kessel.
Larry says "IN SENDING a third-round selection in next year's Entry Draft to Los Angeles for fourth-line center candidate Brian Boyle, Rangers general manager Glen Sather traded his team out of the possibility of getting Boston's dynamic Phil Kessel on a Group II free agent offer sheet."
If the Rangers would have signed Phil Kessel (36G, 24A, 60Pts in 2008/09) to an Offer Sheet worth 5.5 million per season the Rangers would have had to give the Bruins their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks in the 2010 draft.
After putting it in this perspective, Brian Boyle seems to have large shoes to fill. Do you think the move for Brian Boyle was a good move? Do you think the Rangers would have even tried to sign Kessel to an offer sheet? Have at it in the comments section/

Why give up that kinda draft pick for Kessel
Hes good but not worth a 1st 2nd and 3rd. Kovalchuk maybe, not Kessel he isnt a game changer

I rather
include next year’s 1st, 2nd, Rozi, and Zherdev for Heatley.
But if you had to choose between Kovalchuk and Heatley
i am pretty sure the decision is a resounding Kovalchuk. he is two years younger and scored just as many goals on an offensively starved team.
Imagine Kovalchuk blasting feeds from Gomez!

Of course...
Anybody who knows hockey would hands down take Kovalchuk over Heatly. Kovalchuk is overall better in every aspect of the game.
so wait a year
and he will be a free agent…go sign gaborik for a prove it one year deal and forget another 7.5 million dollar player.

My spies tell me
he might be re-signed. If the Rangers want him they are gonna have to blow Atlanta away with a trade, and soon.

While Brooks certainly makes some good points, remember that most, if not all, GM’s frown upon this type of offer sheet behavior as it can be looked upon as reckless. Kevin Lowe received some serious criticism for signing Dustin Penner (Anaheim let walk) and Thomas Vanek (Buffalo matched) to offer sheets during his time as Oilers GM. I highly doubt Sather would want to ruin his relationship with Boston (who he’s made a few trades with over the past few years) and be thought of differently by other GM’s around the league. Its one thing to be ridiculed for bad signings, but another to use somewhat backhanded tactics in doing so.
