NHL News: Colorado Avalanche fire Tony Granato

Sportsnet.ca is reporting that Tony Granato was let go as head coach of the Avalanche today as part of a major house cleaning:

The full story from sportsnet.

The list includes head coach Tony Granato, assistant coaches Jacques Cloutier and Dave Barr, goaltending coach Jeff Hackett, Assistant to the General Manager Michel Goulet and video coordinator PJ DeLuca.

Avalanche team president Pierre Lacroix fired general manager Francois Giguere on April 13.

Granato had to have seen the writing on the wall, considering the Avs made a very public offer to Patrick Roy to become coach (and GM?) of the team while Tony G still had an office in the building

Another former Ranger unemployed.

UPDATE: According to the Denver Post, Greg Sherman will be the new Avalanche general manager, with Craig Billington as the assistant GM. Brad Smith, director of player personnel, will play a more active role in personnel decisions. Eric Lacroix will become the director of hockey operations. Rick Pracey will remain the team's head scout. David Oliver will be named director of player development.

new GM greg sherman

= dwight shrute. over at MHH, we are joking around about how sherman, who was born in scranton, pa, first had the job of Assistant to the GM for three years before he became Assistant GM. and now, apparently due to his cut-throat nature and thirst for authority/power, he has climbed the organization’s ladder to become the new GM.
