BREAKING RANGER NEWS: SCOTT GOMEZ TRADED TO MONTREAL

According to TSN, the Rangers have traded Scott Gomez to Montreal for Winger Chris Higgins.

Here is the full story from TSN.

Highlights:

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired centre Scott Gomez from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Christopher Higgins.

Gomez, 29, is coming off a down season for the Rangers, finishing with 58 points, his lowest total since 2002-2003.

Higgins, a 26-year-old restricted free agent winger, also struggled in 2008-2009, scoring a career-low 23 points in 57 games as he missed a combined 25 games with hand and groin injuries.

Is this a cap clearing move to a bigger trade? Or do the Rangers have a free agent splash planned for tomorrow? We'll know soon, more later

Jim

Thank You Bob Gainey

Gainey has restored my faith in French Canadians!!!

Hopefully there is more to come.

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Can't say I'm heartbroken here..

I liked Gomez and all, but his contract was an albatross. Any chance we can banish trade Redden to the KHL? That would be the only way to one-up this news.

by Matthew Artus on Jun 30, 2009 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

They got McDonagh too, he was Montreal’s 1st rounder in 2007.

by Dave Shapiro on Jun 30, 2009 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe

it is easier to trade Scotty then sign the winger he needs to finish. Not sure where this is going. I would be more impressed if he can unload that albatross Redden.

Mr. Sather

Can you send Drury away too?

by BlueBlooded on Jun 30, 2009 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

Why?

Why would you ever want to send Drury away?

by Rob L on Jun 30, 2009 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Redden Way Before Drury

I would say Redden before Gomez too, but beggars can’t be choosers….

Because he is the most overrated player on the team, who also has a ginormous contract that can be used for better fits?

I would bet that this is a precursor to a bigger deal, (either a trade or signing) later.

Hmmm…I wonder if Sather is going to try make a move for the Sedin Twins? Higgins is an RFA who made $1.9 M last year…giving a qualifying offer of 10%, he’d be up to about $2.1 M. Thats still a $5 M per year savings. Maybe with some additional savings in the depth wings/d-men area, and a really long-term deal, the Sedins could be squeezed in?

Never Liked the Smirky Gomez

Devils never work out as rangers and the guys contract was obscene. This move was done purely as a cap clearing move and i applaud it.

this means heatley

just hope sather doesnt screw the great mood fans are in towards him with this deal by dealing the farm for heatley.

If he can get them to take Rozy’s deal then the rangers still have room for a cammy or gaborik signing.

I’m a fan of Higgins and although I thought Gomez could have turned it around this year, this definitely shakes things up. Clears up a lot of Cap as well.

this frees up

moving sangs i believe because MDZ can replace sangs as the offensive d-man while still having McDonagh added to the system

by Michael Gleich on Jun 30, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

MDZ

MDZ isn’t ready for the NHL, I think. But if the Rangers move a D-man for Heatley someone else could be coming in via Free Agency.

by Rob L on Jun 30, 2009 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

is sangs in the nhl?

no so i didnt say he was ready for the NHL. i said replace him as our best offensive d-man prospect.

Actually McDonagh is a bit of a slug. Valentenko is the better prospect of the two defensemen, trust me.

GLEN SATHER:

"We’ve got lots of cap room now, and it opens lots of options."

Thinks Higgins will be a goal-scorer … was hurt three times last year. Likes the other two kids as future NHL players, too.

"Torts has talked about the young guys all year and we wanted to make some room for them, and we did."

"Since this deal happened I’ve had three calls (from other teams), and it doesn’t take long for people to realize you’re going to make some changes."

Higgens is Komisareks' best friend from what I hear

So maybe Komisarek takes a discount to play with his friend in his home country.

…Yeah, this seems to be an admission by the Habs that they can’t resign Komisarek. Trading his best friend while trying to sign him to a long term contract doesn’t make much sense. I thought those two would be the heart and soul of the franchise for years to come, but things went south in a hurry in Montreal. Gainey has tied his stupid ass to that baindead jerk Kovalev, and nothing else seems to matter to him/

by robert ethan on Jun 30, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not to sure about Higgins … 52 points is his highest output in a full season. We’ll see what happens later on.

by Poe678 on Jun 30, 2009 6:24 PM EDT reply actions

that's not the point

Higgens is more than a servicable winger, but the Rangers got rid of Gomez contract.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 30, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm a Habs fan (or was at least)...

But Bob Gainey is right off his nut. I thought firing Guy Carbonneau just as the team started to win last season was his most harebrained move, but this trade rivals it.

Chris Higgins is just as useful a player as Scott Gomez at this point, and earns a fraction of the salary. Plus he is a few years younger. I don’t think Ryan McDonagh will amount to much, the trade is tacit admission from the Habs that they blew the pick (12th overall in 2007), but Pavel Valentenko can be a very useful NHL defenseman if they bring him over from Russia. Valentenko has already spent a year and a half in North America so it shouldn’t be too difficult. Particularly if N.Y. is the destination.

The rest of the principals involved don’t impact the deal really. But the Rangers made out like bandits, I would say.

To paraphrase the old Polish joke, the Garbage Collector goes to the Gainey household and asks…“Any trash today Mr. Gainey?”.

Bob replies…..“Yes, I’ll take three bags worth please.”.

How does

Bob Gainey keep his job?

I mean as a Ranger fan I love the deal, but the Habs basically made it easier for Slats to make the Rangers better, a rival.

WOW.

This is why I always believe I could do a better job than some of these hacks.

Gainey should have re-signed Komisarek and Koivu months ago, then they could have added more picks and played the youth.

Now it appears Gainey will have to scramble to ice a competitive club.

Shame on you Gainey, for making the NHL stupider.
