UPDATE ON THE GOMEZ TRADE, GLEN SATHER, DANY HEATLEY

Rick Carpinelli over at Rangers Report has some comments from Sather on the trade:

Highlights:

"Torts has talked about the young guys all year and we wanted to make some room for them, and we did."

"Since this deal happened I’ve had three calls (from other teams), and it doesn’t take long for people to realize you’re going to make some changes."

"I spoke with Chris. He’s very excited coming here. He’s very optimistic."

Sounds like he doesn’t expect any trouble signing him.
————————
CHRIS HIGGINS:

Called his injuries bumps in the road. Had an injury in preseason, came back and hurt his shoulder.

Was surprised about the trade. Heard his name thrown around all year "but you never believe it’s going to happen."

Carp is also reporting that Heatley could be a Ranger tonight, but nothing definite:

I’ve been told that Heatley is coming to the Rangers tonight. Not sure what the Rangers are giving up to get him, but they can fit him under the cap now.

Its going to be crazy the next 36 hours, don't forget we will be live tomorrow night on Blueshirt Banter Radio

Wait....

the Rangers get Heatley now, who the hell feeds him the puck?

Drury? Dubi(assuming he;’s not part of the deal?) Messier?

Thats what I’m trying to figure out. It would have made more sense to trade Drury that way you have Gomez feeding Heatley.

by Poe678 on Jun 30, 2009 6:40 PM EDT reply actions

cant trade Drury he has full no movement clause

You know who will feed Healtey the puck? Dubinsky, Higgens, Callahan, Zherdev (if he is still around). Heatley doesnt need a prime time feeder to score goals.

Does Redden have a No Movement Clause as well, and who the hell are the Rangers going to give up for Heatley?

by Poe678 on Jun 30, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

no Redden has 6 teams he can deny a trade to

And dont expect Redden in the trade for Heatley, expect Rozsival, Zherdev and MAYBE a 2nd rounder. Ottawa has NO leverage now.

Id assume guys like Sanguinetti

Del Zotto, Sauer or even Staal might be in that deal (of course hopefully only one).

McDoaugh (?) makes one of those guys expendable.

Id think that Saal is untouchable tho, but we’ll see

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 30, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

NO WAY

No Del Zotto or Staal. Not even close. Sauer, yes. McDounah (? too lol) Yes. Maybe even Sanguinetti (hope not) but definitly not Del Zotto or Staal.

Maybe thats why they got Ryan McDonagh for some bait along with Roz and Zher.

by Poe678 on Jun 30, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

It could be

He is the Canadians number 1 defensive prospects, and the Rangers Really dont need him so we will see.

OK

I know how good Staal is, Im not so sure on Del Zotto cuz he’s not here long but you’re right Id think not.

I don’t know how good of a prospect McDonugh is, I’ve read he’s one of the Habs better prospects (what the hell does it all mean tho?)

But Heatley still is a legit 90-100pt a season man. A prospect is still just that. Staal I agree on no cuz he’s at least semi-proven, but Id rather give up one Del Zotto than a Callahan AND Dubinsky instead

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 30, 2009 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

McDonugh has the potential to be a #1 D-man. He is just as good, if not better, than Del Zotto. He is similar to Staal but without the NHL experience.

by Rob L on Jun 30, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

Redden’s contract is his no movement clause ;-)

by Steeeve on Jun 30, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Well lets not go there

Drury even if he’s not as good a feeder as Gomez does about a million other things that Gomez didn’t do.

No, I’ll trade Gomez anyday before Drury.

I just would have thought that should they get Heatley, Gomez would be the ideal man to set him up.

Drury probaby would do great with him actually, I forgot how good him and Vanek did with the Sabres.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 30, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

got a point there, I did forget about Vanek.

by Poe678 on Jun 30, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Vanek played well with Drury

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

He wants to play for Tom Renney

It would make sense seeing that Brian Boyle would be the fourth line center. I still don’t want him to leave though.

by Rob L on Jun 30, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

at least get something for him

insead of loosing him for nothing

Boyle does NOT

equal Betts.

Boyle = Orr

The Rangers need to keep Betts. I mean if they get Heatley it might be moot, but Betts made the PK what it was.

Boyle just adds a GOON

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 30, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

No?

Betts is an Unrestricted Free Agent, he cant be traded.

by Steeeve on Jun 30, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

This team will look different come October

Which is a GREAT thing.

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Gainy said

he wanted a first line center, and he got one but Gomez needs quality players around him to suceed. I don’t see any of those in Montreal.

Heatley to Edmonton?

TSN columnist Bob McKenzie is reporting there are serious talks between the Sens and Oilers. Heatley to NY… not so fast? (praying Sather does magic)

HA! Give me a break!!
But hey, Bryan Murray is an @ss.

If Sather made this trade without plans to fill the hole Gomez leaves at Center, its not as good a trade as we thought. The Rangers need at least 1 proven Center who can score points.

Glen Sather is a Hockey Genius.

Im sure they at least go out in FA and try

or maybe trade for one. Long offseason

Lets hope Sather makes it count tho. He really got a mulligan with the way he got rid of Gomez here.

I always thought they only needed ONE of Gomez or Drury, and IMO Drury was always the right choice there.

THat he got a player like Higgins and ANOTHER D prospect in McDounough (still?), very nice.

Heatley of course would be nice, but one thing at a time.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 30, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

new idea

what about zherdev and maybe sangs to SJ for marleau…they have cap problems and Marleau taking away Zherdev’s salary is a net 3 mil and only obligated to him for 1 year.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 30, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't trade Wade Redden for Marleau..

……………

Well, maybe I would. But I don’t want Marleau. Or anyone other than Dan Boyle from the Sharks.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 1, 2009 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Yay for Dan Boyle

He’s the only other Boyle in the NHL, so no more disappointing and misleading headlines! That was almost as bad as the NFL offseason when I saw the headline “Seahawks sign Owens”. Little did I know it was some practice squad TE named John Owens. That one hurt.

Actually it was pretty much like 2 years ago when the Rangers traded for Backman. I had never heard of Backman, so I thought it was Barrett Jackman. If only.
