Dany Heatley trade may be off, or may never have been on

Rick Carp is correcting himself, saying the Heatley deal may not have been imminent:

Now it sounds as if the Rangers are done for the night—I was wondering why they had the Glen Sather conference call so early. And if they are done for the night, that probably means they are done in the dealing for Dany Heatley.

Earlier I said it looked like it was getting done. Apparently what I was actually hearing but not comprehending was the Gomez deal going down. Sorry about that.

Either way, I think the Rangers had a great day.

Remember, we are going to be talking about the trade, the draft, and the first day of free agency tomorrow night on Blueshirt Banter Radio.

And if getting heatley was going to cost dubi, cally or staal then better not to do and look to swing rozy somewhere else.

Please no vinny though. 10 years and a cap hit of 7.7 million for a player with a history of shoulder problems…no thanks

WTF?

Are you kidding me?

This is ridiculous! Sather better do something or else blueshirt fans are going to call for his job, which they damn well should. So let me get this straight, we get rid of Gomez and free up an awesome amount of cap space, now we arent even gonna get Heatley? We need a goal scorer and Heatley was the best option…who else is there? Hossa? no…Gaborik? No thanks, we’ll love him til he gets hurt like always.

Once again, don’t be surprised if Sather lets us all down. And PS-we free up all this cap space, now we’re NOT gonna get Heatley, and on top of that we arent gonna sign Betts and Sjostrom??? So…don’t be surprised if we get NO top notch sniper and if we no longer have a great PK like we did last year, cuz without Betts and Sjostrom, that great PK is gone…keep in mind the PK kept us in it the whole year bc our PP was terrible. Imagine if our PK was towards the bottom?

Sather is terrible, he better do something good like signing the Sedins

Hold on a sec Anthony, and by the way, welcome.

Heatley is not the only option out there. Why give up player for Heatley, when other players can be had tomorrow without surrendering anyone?

While there are certainly reasons to find fault with Sather for, I think today’s trade buys him at least a night off don’t you?

Let’s just wait until the 2009-2010 Rangers are finished being made until we start the head rolling. Today is a good day.

I agree Jim to an extent

Not saying ottawa would take this but if we could give up Rozy, Zherdev, bobby sangs as the prospect and a 1st the cap hit is a wash. We could still use the Gomez money to sign another of the scorers that are out there like a Cammalleri or a Gaborik (if he would come for 1 year) while retaining the young core of this team then i would do it. If that is not the type of package then let them keep heatley we sign a forward and look to dump rozy elsewhere.

I'm fine with this

The Sedins would be nice, but I’m worried about how they would do in New York. I would have no problem if the Rangers just sat tight this year. I don’t think one big move helps the team enough to move them from boarder line playoff team to cup contender.

They should look for value and depth up front in free agency. Keep the kids and the cap space.

the Sedins creep me out, LOL

Well its intriguing because of the swedish factor

Hank would definetly help the Sedins adjust to NY.

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

question is

can they play in the East. the physicality playing against the Phillys of the world is different, but not as much as it used to be

by Michael Gleich on Jun 30, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Times have changed

The Western conference is considered the more physical conference now.

by Reg Dunlop on Jun 30, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Good. Use the cap room to get a UFA, no need to give up players to get a scoring winger when you can sign one.

Now let’s just get the RIGHT one at the RIGHT price.

I love the offseason. Being the numbers nerd that I am, I love analyzing salary cap stuff.

no hossa please

This guy is not champion material, sure he’s a prolific scorer during the season and when Malkin and Crosby spoon fed him with a bib during their playoff run in which he still missed some wide open nets. This guy just isn’t all there when the playoffs role around. If you want to make the playoffs get hossa, if you want to win a cup look elsewhere.

by John Mjr on Jun 30, 2009 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

You have to make the playoffs to win the cup

I hate this argument for anyone, but especially when it uses selective information. Hossa had a lousy playoff run this year, but he scored 12 goals in 20 games the year before. Doesn’t that count for something?

The argument against Hossa is that he is 30 and has 11 seasons of wear and tear on his body, and he has always been a great scorer on good offensive teams. The weakest offensive team he has been on was the 06-07 Thrashers that scored 236 goals. He would be coming to a Rangers team that scored 200 goals last season and already has a net loss of 35 goals off that total (-Gomez, Naslund, Antropov, + Higgins)

by Reg Dunlop on Jun 30, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Or he just had a bad finals this year, considering he put up 12-14-26 with Pittsburgh the year prior.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 1, 2009 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions

20 of his 26 points came with crosby or malkin attached

we don’t have malkin and crosby spoon feeding him, say what you want but ur gonna need a different superstar than hossa to represent your team during the playoffs. it’s safe to figure he will never see those numbers again in the post season as well. even after that with detroit when the injuries wore datsyuk and company down come the finals, he wasn’t anywhere to be found.

Heatley to EDM

they gave up a lot for him.

Penner, Cogliano, Smid.

That’s like us giving up Dubi and at least Sanguinetti as a D prospect and i dont have a comparable for Penner on our squad.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 30, 2009 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

Penner = Gomez

Middling player; bad contract

by Reg Dunlop on Jun 30, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

dont disagree

more like the rozy in our trade scenario.
