Rangers Rumor: Will he be "Waive" Redden?

Gredden_medium

Dave over at Blue Seat Blogs posted this in another thread, but I wanted to make sure everyone got to take a look at it. Props to him for finding it, and make sure you take a look at his site, he is doing great work.

Well, this is a bit of stunning news. Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, who tends to always have rumors, so take this one with a bit of "professional skepticism", mentions that the Rangers have been trying to deal Wade Redden, but have been unsuccessful. Taking this further Garrioch states that:

There is talk the Rangers might waive D Wade Redden at the start of next season and send him to the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack to get his $6.5-million salary off the books. New York has tried to deal Redden, but nobody is willing to bite. He still has $32.5 million and five years left on his contract.

Dave also has some commentary on this, the whole story can be found here.

If this happens, party at my place. I’ll supply the keg of Molson.

Molson

the best beer to ever drink while watching a game of hockey.

I’m in college so I am used to paying for my keystones but I gladly shell out the extra dough for molson during Ranger games.

It’s correctly stated as: Bruce “Malkin to the Kings” Garrioch.

I lost my way with it this week as well. Helping out a brotha.

BTW…pick out a nice tie for that thing in an unstated principality in the province of Quebec coming up in a few weeks regarding a sport we don’t speak of?

Obviously sending Redden down to Hartford is a smart move, but Sather must not defeat that move by handing out another ridiculously bad contract to another undeserving player.

WAIVING WADE REDDEN

MAYBEE SATHER IS NOT STUPID AFTERALL WELL HE WAS STUPID ENOUGH TO SIGN THAT STIFF FOR ALL THAT SRATCH NOW WITH THE MONEY YOU SAVE GO SIGN HOSSA JERKY !!!!!

I don’t think Sather will admit his mistake with Redden this soon. Still, it’s worth noting that waiving Redden has upgraded from fan grumblings to irresponsible rumor mongoring.

Interesting, but I’m not sure Sather would want to admit his Redden mistake either. Even if Redden’s outrageous salary is cleared from the salary cap, the Rangers would still be paying the actual salary to Redden to play in the minors. The move would not only serve as an admission of a mistake by Sather in signing Redden but also becomes a horribly embarrassing situation for all involved with the Rangers paying $6-7 million for potentially 5 years to a “minor league player.” That would look so dumb, and continue to make the organization look stupid, for five years. The Rangers might end up with a fairly improved team with the extra cap $$, but other problems would ensue.

If waived, what are Redden’s options? Can he refuse to report? Then what? What happens if he “retires?” If he waits out a year, can he come back to the NHL and sign elsewhere as a free agent?
