2009 Draft, Tampa Bay
First off just to introduce myself, my name is Matt and I am a diehard NYR fan. This is my first of hopefully many contributions to thus site. So without further ado, I present the question, what happens in the (I think unlikely) event that the Islanders select Hedmen 1st overall?
That would leave the Lightning essentially with a choice of a bunch of forwards before they are effectively wasting the second overall pick if they want defensemen. While the lightning did not set the world on fire with their offense, they were held back by an offensively poor D corps. Not to mention, Stamkos did not score or play to his potential really until the second half of the season. With a more offensively talented defense and a comfortable Stamkos for the entire season, the potential for offense is there.
This brings me to my main point. If you are Tampa, do you deal the second overall pick (Tavares or Duchene) for a NHL ready defensemen? From the Rangers point of view, Rozsival could be part of the package that buys the Rangers a potential franchise player and goal scorer in Tavares. Despite the I think unfair bad rap Rozsival gets in NY, he is certainly a capable D man who is capable of moving the puck, making him attractive to a team like the Lightning who are in desperate need of such a Dman. With his large cap hit and the large number of defensive prospects, the Rangers can afford to dump Rozsival for some offense.
While I don't claim to know the Lightning organization too well, were I in their shoes, I would be willing to part with Tavares for a package with Roszival as the headliner. Possibly something along the lines of him and Potter to keep the pipeline full or perhaps Zaba to give another option in net in return for JT and some salary lead weight that the lightning want to get rid of. The Rangers could probably be able to throw in a second round pick to sweeten the pot if necessary.
The upside for both teams is that they both get to address some of their biggest concerns. The Lightning get a credible experienced first pair defenseman while the rangers get scoring potential in Tavares. The rangers could even afford to take on an expensive contract like Ryan Malone if necessary since the acquisition would allow them to drop Zherdev, Antripov or both to clear cap space.
I don’t think from the Rangers point of view this is a hard sell due to the calls for offense, the question to me is really one for Tampa, and one perhaps of their marketing. If they can afford to give up the Seen Stamkos marketing round two, I am personally of the opinion that it makes sense for them to send JT away for an experienced Dman who is capable of moving the puck forward.
Realistically however I would bet money that the Islanders select Tavares first overall and this becomes a non issue.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Sound off if you think I’m crazy.

Welcome
Welcome to the Banter, Matt. I really like the idea, but like you said at the end, I think the Islanders are taking Tavares too. Much of their fanbase is expecting this, and they have had huge ticket inquiries increases since they got the #1 pick because of the potential of seeing Tavares.
But, I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing the Rangers try to do it anyways even if NYI takes Tavares. This draft isn’t the deepest one in ages, but the first 10 picks are pretty solid locks to make an impact in the NHL at some point down the road.
Wow.
I be ecstatic if the Rangers magically pulled this one off. I mean the Lightening would be dumb to get Rosival for anything more than a bag of donuts, but if the Rangers manage to pry the 2nd overall for Rosival and say Zherdev plus a prospect or 2 (maybe Sauer?
Id think they grab Victor Hedman BTW if the Isles grab Tavares.
I know the Rangers have plenty of D-men, but imagine if Hedman realizes his potental? Having Hedman and Staal as the top tandem for the next decade? Pretty scary right there.
Thanks for the welcomes, I did infact copy and paste from word, so I guess that is the source of the problem.
TheSchwab, I fully agree that the isles will likely take Tavares 1st, but I think that would effectively kill any deal with the lightning since they will just take Hedman and call it a day.
If however the Isles pick Hedman, I dont think it is stupid to take Roszival. He led rangers D men in points with a low 30, but that was on a team with no transition game, cramping his ability to get assists. Furthermore he is solid defensively enough to make for a legit first pairing Dman. This is a huge issue for the Lightning, something I think they need to remedy more than they need goal scorers like Tavares or Duchene.
I dont even think the rangers would need to throw Zherdev in, maybe Potter and somebody like Sjostrom would be enough in that the Lightning get three NHL caliber players.
weird, I sent a reply to tell you that I fixed the post, and to welcome you, and its not here, strange.
Anyway, welcome, hope you’ll stick around.
PS, I said in my previous MIA post, Kansas City is going to need a superstar to sell tickets with when the Fishies arrive, Tavares is the guy.

But aside from selling tickets for a big named star
you need a good team. And you build from the back. The Islanders D was terrible this year, and DP needs a good core in front of him to be sucessful.
Hedman is just as prolific as Tavares just at a different position.
And by the way Scunge as I was reading this i was thinking the same proposal. Rozival and eaither Potter or Sauer (no Zabra) because your correct in your assumption that Tampa Bay needs defensemen.
Good post.

The problem I see with this thought is....
… at this point, do other teams really have a high opinion of Rozi? I can’t imagine they do. He’s had two stinkers of seasons in a row (not horrible but definitely short of expectation).
2nd pick
I think Roszival is a good defenseman who is overpaid by about 2 million per year. From tampa’s perspective, there is not a shot in hell he becomes the centerpiece of a deal for the Rangers to trade up and get the # 2 pick. Tampa would be taking on a huge salary and giving up a top pick that would be an immediate impact player. No team in their right mind is going to take our “spare parts” for the 2nd overall, you guys are dreaming if you think combinations of just Rosival, Zaba, Sjostrom, Potter, Zherdev, Sauer gets this deal done. It would have to take something like Rosival, Dubinsky, 1st rounder plus more… , Dubinsky, Sanguinetti, 1st round pick etc…
I agree that you cant just dump the spare parts bin out and hope for the best if you want to move forward, but an attractive package could be made using guys like Roszival, Zherdev, etc. However, with the Lightning having cap space up the ying yang, from next years point of view, they can afford to take on some contracts to get what they want and need.
Frankly that team is set in the top 2 centers department for foreseeable future. If they want a 2nd line wing and a 1st pairing defenseman, a trade down the order to get them might not be a bad idea. From what I understand of the draft, after you get out of the top three this year, you are lot having many players who can step in right away. With 1 being a dman and the other two centers, the lightning really should have their eye only on Hedman.
Zherdev fills out as a second line winger nicely while Roszival provides some steady D although I agree he gets paid too much. If I were a GM who could get those for a switch down the draft order, I might seriously consider it. Dont forget that Roszival and Zherdev last year combined for 88 pts. I understand that does not translate exactly, but the Lightning would not exactly be getting screwed here.
Besides, wouldn’t it be fun to watch Zherdev and Stamkos play together, some speed and crafty hands there could make for a not bad mix.
So while I dont think we will likely see this, I am of the opinion that it is not so unreasonable.
The realitly
is that Hedman right now could probaly outplay Rosival.
Rosival is ass. The Rangers know it, and Im sure the Lightening brass knows it too.
It makes no sense to trade a guy like Hedman, who may be the next Pronger/Chara, for a piece of trash like Rosival and for a guy like Zherdev who MAY score 35 goals one year, but probably never will cuz he’s brain dead.
Id love to have Hedman on the team, but you’d think the Lightening wouldn’t be stupid enough to give up the chance to get him.
In a year when you have a guy like Tavares, who seems like he’s between Crosby and Stamkos, that’s the only way a guy like Hedman is the 2nd overall.

Roszival
I think most Ranger fans are too hard on this guy, probably more because he is overpaid than because of his play. But you can’t fault the guy for accepting sathers big contract. He is definitely overpaid, a $2-3 million salary seems more resonable for what he brings to the table. Overall, he is pretty steady defensively and plays physically. To expect any more than that is expecting way too much. When he does make a mistake it usually glaring, and the fans let him know it. He is not a PP guy, even though the Rangers continuously seem to think he is. That being said, Tampa’s GM would be a fool if he make Rosival the centerpiece of a trade up.
