Dany Heatley wants out of Ottawa

Dany Heatley wants out of Ottawa. As per TSN (they have been busy today) Dany Heatley is unhappy with the direction of the team and wants to be moved.  Here is an excerpt from the entire story:

TSN has confirmed that the 28-year old who signed a six-year, $45 million contract extension with the team in October of 2007 - that includes a no-movement clause - informed the team a week ago of his desire to play hockey elsewhere.

Heatley is one year deep into a six year contract extension that will see him make 7.5 million dollars a year. A steep price but worth it for a guy who has put up 39, 41, 50 and 50 goals his past four seasons.

Me too, he would look great in blue, but we just can’t afford him, both in prospects and the salary cap.

Waive Redden

And you cover nearly all of his contract aaaand his contract is two years shorter.

i could see him in LA for sure. there really are only a handful of teams he can goto.

by John Merrigan on Jun 9, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s not getting waived in the offseason. From what I understand, Torts liked him, and wants to give him a shot with a full training camp in his system. If he still falters, they can do the ole Sean Avery and waive him and maybe let Perry Pearn, who liked him in Ottawa, pick him up for 1/2 price. It saves the Rangers about $3.25 million in cap room if he gets claimed off re-entry.

Redden did play better under Torts, although he probably would have had to hold his stick upside down to have played worse than he did under Renney.

Scott Gomez for Heatly. Heatly is the scorer the rangers need.

by nwahs s on Jun 9, 2009 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

and...

…Gomez is the over-priced No. 2 center the Senators don’t need…

true, but the Sens are not going to get top dollar for Heatley

by John Merrigan on Jun 9, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Ottawa has almost no cap space. Getting rid of Heatley for some good young cheap talent would be the smartest thing they can do if they trade him.

I guess

there’s nothing wrong with dreaming.

But this isn’t happening.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 9, 2009 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

I hope the rangers can get him, but they would need to get rid one of the over payed players the rangers have, which isn’t too likely with their lack of production.

by nwahs s on Jun 9, 2009 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

If you waive Redden

You take 6.5 million off the cap for the next 5 years.

Heatley is 7.5 for the next 5 years.

Redden is 32 Heatley is 28. Both have the same numbers on their contracts (Heatley is 1 million more)

I would do it. And the Rangers could afford it.

I would package Gomer for him, no doubt about it.

whats the point in losing the pivot for Heatley? doesn’t make much sense

by John Merrigan on Jun 9, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Bryan Murray is pretty stupid

So offer Wade Redden for Heatley strait up.
Just think of the headlines Murray.
Wade Redden the homecoming 2009-10!!!
Redden Back in Ottawa!!!

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

didn’t the sens fans kind of turn on redden during his last couple of years, or more accurately after chara was gone? why would they take him back anyhow?

ok

multi-pronged attack idea

1: rumors sj wants to make some major changes, call and inquire about thornton….gomez/korpikoski/a pick or two? salaries almost offset, though something else would probably have to be given up to sj (possibly sanguinetti?)…yes gomez has a no/limited trade clause, but maybe he’ll agree, can’t hurt to ask

2: kick the tires on heatley, maybe roszival (shorter contract at less $) and a sign & trade with zherdev? they save some money and get a younger scoring winger back

3: see about dealing redden to a team with cap room for next to nothing or, if need be, waive him

the point here is that sather f’d up royally paying top salaries to second tier players like drury and gomez….if you’re gonna pay 7-7.5 mil/year for somebody, they have to be upper echelon players

odds of this happening anywhere but in my mind: zero….but i can dream….

heatley wants out of ottawa ??

he would be the sniper the rangers need a 50 goal scorer he has a monster contract also give them gomez or drury and rosival the senators are just looking to slash payroll the thing is ottawa is not stupid and they are going to want some of the big three we have stahl dubinsky and callahan does sather bite ?? only time will tell ………

by lohaus#54 on Jun 10, 2009 3:22 PM EDT reply actions

well you would have to assume

a) that Redden is waived thus taking 6.5 off the cap.
b) That maybe Drury or Gomez is traded (Gomez is the easier contract to move since Drur y has a no movement clause)
or c) That Rozsival might be traded taking 5 million off the cap

beyond the big three

i’d add anisimov, grachev and del zotto to that list of ’don’t move unless it’s for a player like ovechkin or malkin’

sather pulled off a shocker last year trading for zherdev, maybe he pulls another rabbit out of his as—er….hat….and does something at the draft?

redden, roszival, drury, gomez….the sather legacy lives on….
