The Rangers tend to play things close to the chest, and today is no different so far. Heatley is still in play, that bonus doesn’t have to be paid until 11:59 PM tonight, but I’m starting to move away from the Heatley camp at this point.
My best guess, and that’s all it is, is that the Rangers will look to make a few smaller splashes, instead of one big cannonball. I like what the Rangers have done the last 6 days, hopefully their good run continues today.

What depth are you speaking of? The young guys in Hartford that have played barely any NHL games, or the overpaid, underachieving Redden and Roszival?

They played hockey on LI together, with Gilroy.
by Dave Shapiro on Jul 1, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions
Like it or not, Redden and Roszival are here, and you have Staal and Girardi already.
So that leaves two spots, Gilroy is almost guaranteed a spot, and then you have Potter, Sauer, Sanguinetti who are all ready as per Schoenfeld. Then you have Del Zotto and McDonagh on the way.
I’m all for a defenseman on a short term deal, and for packaging Girardi for some front line talent though.
by Dave Shapiro on Jul 1, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions
I didn’t realize Gilroy was that close to being NHL ready. I know he’s older than most kids coming out of college, maybe that helps him.
by stonecoldcory on Jul 1, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Gilroy is impressing at camp, and he has a one way contract, so wherever he starts, he stays. Plus, they aren’t paying him $1.75 mil to play in Hartford.

yes McDonagh
he is probably the top rated D man in our system which is impressive with MDZ, and Bobby Sangs down there to go with other back end d-men like Sauer and Potter. Gilroy there as well but he should make the squad this year.

LOL, from NYT

Jeez, maybe of the Glen Sather era, but there’s probably at least dozen better in club history. Of the Habs side, they say, "This is a desperation move for a team that has had a devil of a time landing quality free agents." That might be true.

there are still reports that heatley is just waiting on options from other teams before he waives his no-trade clause am I correct?

Disappointed again
Listen boys, this is my take on this year’s FA.
Sather has said hes done with his irrational, big name free agent spending. Which tells me we aren’t getting anyone significant. Hossa is gone, Havlat is gone, Gaborik isnt even in talks with us. So let me get this straight Slats…its very obv we need a goal scorer after watching last season and we’re not gonna get one. Don’t be surprised if the Heatley deal falls thro and we end up with no one. We’re signing guys like Brashear? for what?! Doesnt make sense and I hope Slats gets fired after we finish 11th in the conference this season and score the least amount of goals and have a terrible PK bc two of our best PKers arent coming back. How can we not resign Betts?
So we’ll end up doing nothing this free agency and be severely disappointed. No Heatley, Gabby, Hossa. Where are the goals gonna come from?
Conklin to STL

if sather spends what he saved on Gomer’s trade to sign this guy we are worse today then we were before the trade as we have give up our top (extremely overpaid) center and replaced him with a no offense d-man and are in the same salary cap spot.
of course he is cause sather pays out his ass for D men

Guys Komisarek is the type of defenseman the Rangers haven’t had since Ulfie, a big mean stay at home defenseman. I know he isn’t the sniper everyone wants, but he does fill a need. You need to have a guy that makes other teams afraid to get rough around your goaltender, the Rangers do not have that, and have not had that in years

meh
we already had him before he reached his prime, do we really need to have him again now that he’s past it?
Yes
He’s had 27, 29, and 24 (in 64 games) goals the last three years. He would have been the leading scorer on the team. For one ore two year at 2.5 I would do it.
I don't like this logic
this is like (to borrow a discussion from AA) saying Mark DeRosa would be leading the Mets in HR if they had signed him this past offseason. it’s neglecting the conditions that led to the raw numbers. Knuble scored a bunch of PPGs for a team that had a better power play and more offensive talent overall than the Rangers. do you really think he scores 27 goals last year if he’s playing for the Rangers? I’d be surprised if he broke 20.
knuble
is more of a 2nd or 3rd move that you use as a final piece depending on what else you did.

another reason
not to waste 5 mil on komisarek
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions
They have three holes in the line up to fill
And not enough guys in the system ready to fill them. How do you propose doing this given limited cap space?
You have to try to sign guys like these to value contracts. I’m saying 5 for 30. But 2 for 5 is reasonable
not sure which 3 holes you refer to but i can fill 2
rozi and zherdev to dallas for richards fills gomer’s hole. (cost zero on the cap)
sign cammy or gabby (1 yr 6.5 for gabby might get him)
we get our sniper and a first line center who is gone in 2 years. i would move drury to first line wing too.
Higgins, Dubi, Cally as a 2nd line.
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions
That assumes that trade get made
They have to replace Gomez, Antropov, and Naslund. That’s about 60 goals right there. Higgins might be a 20 goal scorer. That still leaves 40 goals of production to replace just to get back to where they were this year. If you move Zherdev and his 20 goals of production that has to be replaced.
How does this happen? Richards and Gaborik still probably represent a net offensive loss from last years team. They would need more. Knuble, Koivu, or Tanguay could fill that void.
this is what we need to do
Trade for Heatley, using Rozy as one of the players in the deal, with a pick or two and a prospect or two. Then we still have cap room and we sign Komisarek AND Cammy. Then we are awesome and all are happy and we fill every hole
How do they fill every hole?
If you get Heatly, its probably going to cost Dubi or Zherdev. You lose four offensive players from your roster and replace them with two. That creates two new holes. Komisarek doesn’t fill a need since they have D depth.
If you added Heatly or Gaborik etc… to last years lineup this argument makes sense. But an already weak Rangers offense has been made weaker with the loss of Gomez, Naslund, and Antrpov. If you move Dubinsky or Zherdev it gets even weaker. Adding Heatly and Cammilleri or Gaborik only get you back to even production wise, but still leaves two spots to fill.
Sabers sign Steve Montador

ok Sather, i know what to do...
he should listen:
1) Trade Rozy, a pick and two prospects for Heatley and one prospect
They negate each other on cap pretty much.
2) Sign Cammy, theres our number 1 center right there
3) resign Mara to fill Rozy’s void
4) Bring up two new faces to the Defense (Gilroy and Sangs or Del Zotto)
That’s it…Rangers are awesome now
cammy is LW not a real center even listed that way
Gilroy and Sauer is much more likely
Sangs would probably have to go to get heatley
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Then trade him
Then trade Sangs…he’s 26, still in the minors…never gonna amount to anything great. I’ll trade him to get Heatley…we NEED scoring, its a glaring need. Trade Rozy and Sangs and a pick for Heatley…sign either Cammy, who i would love, or Havlat. Resign Mara. Done
how many...
how many young D men do you want? We can part with some for a proven goal scorer, youre as bad as Sather himself
did i say dont trade any?
or did i say dont call him 26 and say he wont amount to anything when he 21.
I said trade Rozi, Zherdev and Sangs for Heatley
Or Deal Rozi and Zherdev to Dallas for Richards and sign cammy or gabby (1yr).
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions
i'm all for it
i’m DEF all for trading Zherdev, hes unproven and even if he does reach his potential i think he’ll be just as good (at best) as Heatley. But i dont think he’ll ever be that good. He might go back to russia after this season, so why take the chance, let someone else deal with his headaches. So i’m down with that trade, for sure.
I never boo anyone, but I will boo Brashear. I hate that scumbag.
Betts is gone.
I don’t get this deal. Orr wanted less money, is younger, better at hockey, and loved in NY. Why let him go for effing BRashear?

What’s Brian Burke thinking? If he’s this stupid, we should be able to swindle a deal to give him Redden. If we can get Gainey to take Gomez, we should be able to pull this off
update on komisarek
KOMISAREK STILL ON HOLD
There are rumors and reports Komisarek is close to signing with the Islanders or has agreed to sign with them, but these reports are not accurate. Still many teams involved, but the Isles are certainly one of them.
It's actually in Uniondale
But I agree, its a warehouse, terrible terrible arena
ah shit, I had Farmingdale on the brain for another reason

LIke I said earlier, I want Komisarek, I think the Rangers need him, and it will piss off all the Islander fans who seem to think its some kind of honor to go play in that toilet in Uniondale
There i fixed it, sort of

Hell yeah
Rozy and some picks and prospects to Ott
Redden to Toronto for NOTHING…i’ll take a food vendor for Redden, seriously.
TSN just said, NY Rangers and Ott Sens are no longer talking and it’s Edmonton or bust for Heatley bc Ott wants Dubinsky. Either Edm or Ott for Heatley…
Awesome…GREAT JOB SATHER! No goal scorers for the Rangers, no playoffs next year
i wouldnt deal dubi
to me what that says is sather was smart in what he offered and wasnt giving up our young players.
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree
I dont want them to trade Dub either, but we NEED a goal scorer, great, dont trade Dub bc hes gonna be good, but its awesome that all our young, good guys are gonna rot away on the Rangers who are going to be terrible
see if dallas has interest
rozi and zherdev for brad richards…sign cammy and your still fine.
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions
That would be a nice deal too.
Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

speaking of florida
they never finalized a deal with leopold right?
so they waited on jaybo and didnt deal him at the deadline when they could have had a premium package and instead got leopold and a 3rd and didnt even sign leopold
heatley
NHL live on TSN just basically reported that its edmonton or bust. Ottowa didnt like the deal the rangers offered.
Then let them go bust, why the hell should Sather overpay for a prima donna who doesn’t want to be where he is. Sorry, I have to give Sather a little credit for sticking to his guns.

You're right
Sather did a good job sticking to his guns. I do respect him for that. However, when we don’t make the playoffs this year, he will have no job. So…thats a win for us
TSN-Moderator: RDS reports that the Flyers have signed Ian Laperierre for three years and $3.5 million.

thats good
they have this thing called the salary cap that makes that impossible
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions
They have the room. They have over $25 million to spend this offseason, minus the $16 they are going to use to resign Zherdev, Higgins, Dubi, Cally and Korpo.
So $9 million.
thank you Dave
sometimes i hate when i feel like im the only one who knows anything
didnt the Flyers
have cap problems last season? So how are they signing these guys?
Actually it is possible...
Waive Redden, free up another 6.5 and it is possible
and if u spend that money now
how do u plan on paying staal and girardi next year?
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions
wtf
are you talking about?! how much do you think they are gonna make? 5 mil each? no…Staal will make like 3 and Girardi will make less…it’s not like we have NO ROOM
the cap is going down next year.
and if you do your deals then we have no one coming off next year to pay them
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions
not if you spend 15 million and remove zero.
how is the salary cap hell any different if u replace gomez deal with gaborik and redden with cammy?
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
MLEETCH
what else can we do? We’re not getting Heatley…we need goals
Does no one else agree that if we don’t make big moves now, we are going no where?
no
they need goals.
Heatley would be nice, but is he in Edmonton yet?
Did they make an offer they can’t refuse?
As far as anyone knows no and the deal probably has until midnight.
heatley wasnt going to make us a contender.
like i said deal Rozi, Zherdev and a pick to Dallas for Richards (first line center, only 2 years left on big deal)
sign a sniper
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Our top four players right now
are Dub, Cally, Avery and Drury…sorry but thats AWFUL
Attention please

Wow are the Flyers getting stronger
First they pick up Pronger and now Laperiere. That team is really living up to there hype of being a big strong team
Richards isnt going anywhere
Listen i would love that deal, but its not gonna happen. Sather is gonna do nothing and we are going to score the least amnt of goals this season
NOOOOOOOOOOO
Neil back on the table to the rangers
and if u want st. louis just sign cammy
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions
UGH
rangers are top deal for Niel. Offered 4 years. why!
oh lord
u would think he learned his lesson as bad as avery to dallas was as a deal
by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
doesn’t anyone else find this to be funny how bad the Rangers are?
We are chasing CHRIS NEIL right now?! REALLY?! what is wrong with Slats
Ok guys the new thread is up for you.
