Sather's threatening to cash in all the brownie points from the Gomez dump.

I just want this fact near the top of the thread, to show how brilliant/preposterous an observation it is later on.

by Matthew Artus on Jul 1, 2009 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

dont be surprised

When Sather keeps trying for Heatley, which ends up falling through, Cammy and Gabby are gone by the time Sather stops talking to OTT and all thats left is Saku Koivu, yay

i forget the comp

oh that’s right larry brooks was bitching about it the other day…it is a 1, 2, 3 but we dont have a 3 now cause of the Boyle trade.

Our team getting tougher

I like that they are making our team alot stronger but im not liking the deals

by b4mv01 on Jul 1, 2009 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

Brashear was enough

to make our team tougher/stronger

We already have D men that don’t really take any crap, however, I agree they did/do need ppl who will clear out the net, we didnt really ever push back last yr

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Brashear

Neil, Boyle?

4th Line? Christ that’s some ass whoppin

Oh and by the way, it was 5 minutes after I left work yesterday that the Gomez trade went down, I actually had to fire up my laptop in the car and post the story. Thank God for mobile broadband. So who knows, maybe history will repeat itself, catch you in a little while

Lets just make sure we are clear on this

all the teams that were better than us last year have continued to improve and we have not done anything…

Can anyone say 11th place finish?

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Taylor Hall???

well if this is our team then at least we will get a lottery pick

by b4mv01 on Jul 1, 2009 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

haha

that’s sather’s master plan…tank the year to get Hall. he has seen the pens do it to get Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and Staal

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

not to mention

by then Grachev, MDZ, Sanguinetti, McDonagh maybe even Stepan should be ready to play.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I say

just bring them all up and let them play and learn together…we’ll suck for a bit, buit we’re gonna anyway

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

HaHa

I like that, looking towards next season…at least we’ll get a high pick

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

We should just trade

to get all the Staals and we’ll be set

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

Any chance..

The Rangers are trying to package a trade for Kovalchuk? Or does that not make any sense?

by stonecoldcory on Jul 1, 2009 5:00 PM EDT reply actions

it would make sense

but what would we have to give up? ATL sucks and they want youth, they are def gonna want dub and/or cally and maybe a young D like Sangs

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

What about Zherdev, Roszival, maybe a pick and a d-prospect?

by stonecoldcory on Jul 1, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Pshh

pull the trigger if thats the package…in a heartbeat…then we free up some money and can sign Cammy too

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

this is gonna be real dumb....

but who is this boyle youre all speaking of? what did i miss? thought that was part of the gomez deal but i guess not. fill me in here.

by BK! on Jul 1, 2009 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

traded for him

gave up a 3rd round pick next year to LA.

by stonecoldcory on Jul 1, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Look...

I really am all for getting Brashear AND Neil…i do like the toughness, which was lacking seriously last season…

I’m all for it AS LONG AS the Rangers get goal scorers too. Ill take the two tough guys as long as we can get Cammy and maybe another guy who can contribute

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

It’s about speed, too. The Rangers lacked overall team speed.

by stonecoldcory on Jul 1, 2009 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yea

and their fastest guy is gone now…you’re right, they were insanely slow. But Cammy is real fast :)

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

im pretty sure tsn just reported that it will be edmonton for heatley

Fine, let him go

Let him stay in America’s Hat

by stonecoldcory on Jul 1, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Youth

I think the Rangers NEED to bring up at least two new guys from their system and i’m looking at Gilroy and possibly Anisimov

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

the thinking..

Torts has told Sather that the Rangers are soft, and has been talking about all our young guys.

Sather is getting tough guys, but does he really think all our young guys are NHL ready, and good enough to possibly be 2nd line? This could be why Sather isn’t trying to sign any marquee players.

by rmc235 on Jul 1, 2009 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

but

Chris Neil? Brashear? and a trade for Brian Boyle?

Everyone knows who Brashear is. Chris Neil = Taller Sean Avery – Hockey skill

And Boyle runs about 6"7 250.

What the FUCK are we doing with this?

Nobody's gonna want to play the Rangers

They are gonna kick the shit out of everyone. Not on the scoreboard tho.

but lose with dignity and strength lol

by b4mv01 on Jul 1, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

McKenzie on TSN is reporting that Dubinsky is off the table for Heatley

i still dont think Heatley is coming especially with the EDM or bust proclamations but this is new news to me at least

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 5:17 PM EDT reply actions

Great

The rangers are screwed, bc we’re not getting Gabby…Cammy was our guy

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

Sather is thinking we have good enough D and a good enough G that we can win every game 2-1 and with our new found toughness, we’ll be even better at winning those 2-1 games. However, I don’t agree and I think we need a 35+ goal scorer. I dont think Dub and Cally are good enough to carry us

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

And to think...

…the Rangers just fired the perfect coach for a defense-first system.

by Matthew Artus on Jul 1, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Rangers Are Out of Heatley

According to Eklund:
“The Rangers unwilingness to trade Dubinsky in the deal and the dissatisfaction with what was perceived as a bit of “dirty poker” last night has caused them to pull out of Heatley talks. The Wild however…may be getting in."

by rmc235 on Jul 1, 2009 5:19 PM EDT reply actions

here is a thought that hasnt been mentioned yet

Any chance that bringing in neil means torts cans Avery?

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 5:19 PM EDT reply actions

He better not

Avery generates offense and creates energy, we are going to NEED him if this Free agency blunder keeps up

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

After all the Rangers went through to bring Avery back...

…I can’t imagine they’d just dump him now. It’d be an epic PR disaster.

Sather has yet to sign ANY of our restricted free agents.

by rmc235 on Jul 1, 2009 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

ha, and?

PS-Habs fans are gonna LOVE Gomez now and he’s gonna have a career yr…90 pts

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

seriously.

it was such a good trade as far as saving cap space, and we end up doing nothing with it. We sign Neil and Brashear, seriously Slats?

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

it is being reported on “nhl on tsn”

by rmc235 on Jul 1, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

i see this in the kubina trade recap

“The trade with will save Toronto roughly $2 mil in cap space for future moves, including a strong offer that the Maple Leafs have made to sign unrestricted free agent Mike Komisarek.”

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

toronto is not gonna be pushed around this season

Orr, Komisarek and possibly Neil….thats a tough team

by b4mv01 on Jul 1, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions

i have a feeling this is going to get worse

not only are we not getting the top guys but i think sather will then overpay worse guys…ie Gionta, Tanguay, Neil, Scuderi

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

WHAT IS GOING ON?>!?!?!

Are we really supposed to be satisfied with only signing Brashear so far?

The Heatley deal fell threw, so WTF is Sather waiting for?! WE HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW this FA period or from freeing up space and getting rid of Gomez…WTF is going on?!

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

Canadian teams are really getting a whole shit ton better

just look at all there signings….J-Bo, Komisarek, Cammy, the Sedins…nuts lol

by b4mv01 on Jul 1, 2009 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

Sather eventually is going to panic and we are going to give a big, long contract to someone who doesn’t deserve it

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

Sather better have a plan to fall back on. He made it clear the gomez move gave up lots of cap room to survey our options!

now what?

by rmc235 on Jul 1, 2009 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

he’s doing a fabulous job so far. The only thing that could possible salvage this FA year is Gaborik, thats it.

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

cap room so hopefully that will either amount to a deal later on or maybe during the season.

Hopefulyl it doesn’t mean Antropov.

Maybe it means that they will indeed bring up the kids and roll with it.

They still will be average at least with Henrik and the D being similar, so the season is not lost.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 1, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

unless dubi and cally and zherdev take huge steps forward

we are in a lot of trouble.

Higgins replaces naslund…dubi now has to step up to replace gomer and cally has to go from a 40 to 60 pt scorer and AA has to step in and fill dubi’s role.

zherdev needs to find it consistently and give them 35G and 30 assists.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Any Other options

Are there any other options out there?

by arf5325 on Jul 1, 2009 6:13 PM EDT reply actions

From Sportsnet.ca

Now, Sportsnet has learned that Mike Cammalleri has signed with the Montreal Canadiens for five years, $30 million. Martin Havlat is still out there, as is Marian Gaborik. But just in case New York GM Glen Sather doesn’t cash in, he’ll keep Heatley on the backburner until later this evening.

Nonsense

Gaborik is still there. No one is gonna rush and get him cause of his last season. But he’ll be worth the risk cause he’s still a damn good player. He’ll prob. get him cheap. Who the hell is neil

Getting rid of Gomez

Was a good start to this FA. He’s planning something. The Heatly deal didn’t fall through he just didn’t pull of the trade yet. Give a day or two.

Gomez is good

but was a bad cog in the rangers machine. He didn’t fit right on the team. Plus i was never that happy about when they signed him. I hate the Devils. And i hated when they had Holik for a little bit

As far as I see, Heatley isn’t in Edmonton yet.

Also its really not like the guy is gonna play in Ottawa this season so he WILL be traded.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 1, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Rangers refuse to trade Dubinsky to Ottawa

therefore, deal falls through, Rangers are not getting Heatley.

TSN Article on Neil

“Chris Neil is contemplating three solid offers and will make his decision shortly.

The New York Rangers offered a four year deal to Neil, averaging $2.3 million per season, while the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs have both tabled three year offers to the Toronto native.

Sources say while the Rangers have made the most substantial bid, the veteran forward is weighing the appeal of staying in Canada which is making his decision more difficult.

Earlier in the week, Neil reportedly turned down the Senators’ offer of $1.7-million per year.

Neil, 30, tied a career-low with ten points and set a career-low with a minus-13 in 60 games last season.

The 6-foot-1, 214-pound right winger can still mix it up, however, getting in 14 fights last season; his highest total since 2002-2003. "

Stick with the appeal of Canada

Nothing wrong with a young team

I, for one, find this long-sighted approach refreshing

by XLII on Jul 1, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

Those players are short, low-money investments

aka the opposite of all the shitty contracts we’ve given out in the past

by XLII on Jul 1, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

neil who is 30 already by the way

i have no problem with a youth movement but a youth movement means young kids get a chance to play…paying these 2 3.6 million a year and taking away two spots kids could be taking is not a youth movement.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

4th line is no place for a 20 year old

Let him get some playing time in the AHL while so over-the-hill brawlers play 5 min a game in the bigs

by XLII on Jul 1, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

also

i assume you watched the playoffs and maybe it was my eyes but i seem to remember darren helm, jon abdelkader playing on the 4th line for detroit at 22.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea its called a call up

They didn’t waste their time on the 4th during the regular season

by XLII on Jul 1, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll take those any day of the week

over 7 year, 6 million per contracts to overrated hacks

by XLII on Jul 1, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

so paying 4th liners like players is fine

as long as the number is lower. doesnt matter that they are just if not more inflated relative to actual worth.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Im not crazy about Brashear either

But at most we overpayed him by 1 mill. We’ve over payed other FAs by 10s of millions of $

by XLII on Jul 1, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

then dont use their signings as a sign of a youth movement

you want to say they just signed a bunch of cheap guys and wont compete thats fine.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I am referring mainly to the trade which brought in Montreal’s top prospect at age 20

by XLII on Jul 1, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

and the fact sather tried but failed to sign komisarek says what

that he was trying to create spots for those young d-men to play?

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Did Komisarek tell you that or was it Sather?

So far there has been one two-year signing and a bunch of unreliable rumors that have put your panties in a bunch

by XLII on Jul 1, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

but if brashear is worth 700K and we pay him 1.4

is that better or worse than gomez who was probably worth 5 getting 7.37?

go for Mats Sundin … haha

correction. Gaborik 5 years, $7.5 per year

by Poe678 on Jul 1, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

7.5 is paying full price and probably overpaying

i was joking the first time

but if we can dump off rozi i wouldnt mind kovalev for a year or 2. his play making with gaborik and letting Drury play off like he did with Briere could be special.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

this was from the gionta story

Earlier in the day, the Canadiens signed forward Mike Cammalleri to a five-year deal worth $30-million. Also, the Habs inked veteran blueliner Jaroslav Spacek to a three year, $11.5 million contract and defenceman Hal Gill to a two-year, $4.5 million contract.

No mention of resigning Kovalev.

Gabby

The guy played 15 games last year and has missed 15% of 4 of the previous 5 seasons he played and we gave him 7.5 per over a multiyear deal. How is this better than Gomez?

Is it official or are you kidding me again.

by Blueshirts Rock on Jul 1, 2009 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

Sjostrom

Only 750K a year and 1.5 mil for 2 years for a player with great upside and potential. He was a great penalty killer and for that price a bargain for the Flames. I thought his price qould be between 1 mil and 1.5 mil a season but a steal for only 750K!

by kiop900 on Jul 1, 2009 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

he has no upside potential.

he is a great penalty killer, but lets not go crazy thinking he is suddenly going to score. still great price for his energy and penalty killing

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

...

Basically what i was saying but he also has great speed and maybe given a chance to get more minutes and not be on the 4th line would have shown his true potential but for 750K they should have signed him!

by kiop900 on Jul 1, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree he is worth 750K

but his speed was never in question…his lack of scoring was not about ice time but hands.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 1, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Fact of the matter is...

Freddy Sjostrom gave us 150% every single damn night and he was quick and was part of the best PK unit in the league, say goodbye to that as hes gone and it seems like Betts wont be coming back. So im pretty upset about that. and Tho i like the Gabby signing, Id feel much better about it if we got Heatley too, Gabby wont play every game, he’ll get hurt in camp.

by Anthony J on Jul 1, 2009 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

Well lets keep our fingers crossed...

bc if he even plays 70 games a season, he’ll get 80 pts…40 goals…Higgins could score 30 goals, same with Zherdev, Cally is ready to score 25-30, dub will get 20, hopefully with 40-50 assists. Drury is good for 20, Avery gets 10-20. Hey you never know, we’re a lot better now than we were before and believe it or not, we still have 15 mil under the cap right now. So we could resign a few players and possibly land one more quality forward at like 3 mil or so.
