After Day 1 Rangers get worse as Atlantic rivals get better

Okay, so the Rangers dont make a big splash on day so far. Hossa gone to chicago forever(12 years for a 30 year old dude?) But seeing teams like philly with pronger on their roster, seeing the islanders get a healthy NHL caliber goalie and Tavares, and the penguins still have Crosby and Malkin. So what do the rangers do? well they trade their "number one center" for an above avg 2nd/3rd line scoring winger.

Okay that deal moved a TON of cap space to sign a couple guns for this season right?

well thats the thinking among Ranger fans. So early in the day we see fan favorite Colton Orr goto Toronto. In my opinion I dont mind seeing he leave the team because the team blows offensively and his 5 points didnt really help. The one thing I dont want to see is when Toronto plays the rangers and he inevitably will beat up whoever they might replace him with...

Enter Donald Brashear. The man who took out Blair Betts from the postseason last year with a Douchebag play. Im sure that will make for good team chemistry if they decide to bring Blair back into the fold... considering they will probably play on the 4th line together. Brashear can throw punches, but in the NHL today you need to do more than that. He is a big body that they could put in front of the crease on the Powerplay, but id rather see Avery do that because he actually has talent.

Im not too thrilled with the rumors of Heatley coming to the team unless Sather somehow snags him for wade "f-ing" redden straight up. thats it. Dont get me wrong, heatley is a tremendous talent, but this trade demand stuff is a real question of character. Then, the price of the trade? whatever, we as fans can only sit here and wait.

Havlat, Gaborik... huge health issues in the past. The Rangers have NOTHING to compete with the atlantic divisions fowards. They lack any star power up front to compete with the rest of the divisions talent.

Islanders have Tavares(im pretty sure he will be good)

Pitt - Crosby, Malkin

Phi- Richards, Carter

NJD - Parise

the Rangers - Drury? Zherdev? if he plays? Callahan? AVERY?! none of these players would scare me if the other team got a Powerplay. Why? cause out of all of them, Drury is the only one with a decent history.

So i think the rangers need to make a move in order to compete within its own division, let alone the eastern conference.

until sather is fired or dies

the rangers will not be able to compete. it pains me to realize this, but i just dont see him leaving any time soon on his own…he lets orr go for brashear? what was he thinking? now sjostrom, one of our two outstanding penalty killers is a flame. hope betts comes back….i might be buying myself a nice new orange and white jersey and making journeys to nassau for games next season…sather is making me not want to be a rangers fan at all…

yah. Two of our four penalty killing forwards are gone. Soon to follow is Betts, the single best. So we go from #1 to #26 in PK this year. It’s okay, it’s not like that’s an important facet of the game or anything.

NY tends to thrive on pessimism, unless you’re a Yankee fan.

No they’re whiners too.

Don't generalize there.....

But yea, there are a lot of them…just not all.

Truth

As a ranger fan how many times has the team overpaid for someone and gotten zero return. Nearly every offseason, so why is this one going to be different

Actually...

Except for the Islanders and Flyers getting better I say the Pens and Devils got worse
Yeah the flyers added Pronger and Laperriere which gets them much stronger but we all rememebr how shaky Emery is.
And with the Islanders all they added was 40something year old Dwayne Roloson and John Tavares. And as Rangers fans we all know how draft picks can go (insert Hugh Jessiman). Also who says Tavares won’t be the next Aleandre Daigle?

The Devils lost a great third line player in Madden and one of their offensive threats in Gionta.
The pens are going to lose Scuderi and already lost Hal Gill. Also they will lose Fedotenko and Sykora.

i agree but trends...

look at the trends… The devils lose star player after star player and somehow theyre always good. so they could sign up you and me and alexander daigle and the devils would somehow find a way to make us look good. Look at mike mottau for crying out loud.
Anyways, yes the penguins got “weaker” by losing a couple guys, but they didnt lose their core so they will be an offensive juggernaut for years to come.

AS many of you all have heard Gaborik to the rangers.
This is the answer glen sather has come up with?

Dont get me wrong Gabby is nasty… when he plays, which recently hasnt been much. Unless the rangers do an operation on gaborik like Striker did to wolverine, Injecting him with adamantium would make his 7.5 per year worth it.
Im excited to see him play for the rangers, im just nervously awaiting when he gets hurt.

And i would have been more excited to see sather get a couple of free agents with that money as oppose to just one.

Seriously

We needed a star winger, so we went out and got a star winger. Cammalleri, for all his talents, is not a star. Havlat gets hurt more often than Gaborik, and has only scored 30 goals 1 time. Hossa and the Rangers wanted nothing to do with each other. The Sedins would have cost even more money. Seriously, what combination of players could we have gotten for $7.5mm that would be even the slightest upgrade over what we already had?

Who would you prefer that we sign, Chris Neil and Alex Tanguay? We already have enough 3rd line fodder, we needed a damn bona fide scoring threat.

More reason to trade Dubinsky

You want talent at the forward spot. How about these for wingers: Gaborik, Heatley, Callahan, Avery, Zherdev and Higgins. Lose Dubinsky and give Anisimov a shot with Drury, and maybe Grachev amazes in camp. Boyle is the 4th line c. That is a team to be feared on the offensive end of the ice. If we can lose Rozsival and Redden that would be great then we can bring in a Richards. I would even give Koivu a chance. He is better than what is here.
