RANGERS NEWS: GABORIK SIGNS WITH RANGERS (Update)

As per TSN:

Former Minnesota Wild winger Marian Gaborik has agreed to a five-year contract with the New York Rangers.

The Slovakian forward will earn $7.5 million per year.

Gaborik played his entire seven-year career with the Wild, scoring 219 goals and 437 points in 502 games. Injuries limited Gaborik to just 13 goals and 23 points in 17 games this season. Gaborik set career highs in goals (42), assists (41) and points (83) in 77 games during the 2007-2008 campaign.

The 27-year-old was Minnesota's first pick (third overall) at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

(Update: For those of you who originally saw 5.5, that was what was originally posted on TSN. 7.5 is the updated number, so take it for what it is worth. We will have more on this tomorrow.)

Yeah TS is reporting 7.5/year… not sure where you found 5.75 … its 37.5 mil for 5 years.

Ahh…Sather Logic at its best – replace one underachiever with a ginormous contract, with another player with even MORE questions at the same price.

But in truth, Gaborik has waaay more upside than the Gomez deal. Gaborik, when healthy, is a real first-liner who can put up 45 goals and 90 points. So to sign a 1st line winger is going to cost that type of money and contract. So for that reason alone, it could have been worse.

But Gomez actually plays. What are the odds Gaborik even plays the majority of 3 of those seasons? I think you could compare the Gaborik and Gomez numbers at the end of the contracts and Gomez at least matches Gaborik (and I am by no means a Gomez fan).

by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 1, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont disagree. I wouldnt be surprised if Gaborik is hurt every single one of those – he’s had more groin pulls than [insert dirty joke here].

But this is the bed Sather made for the NYR, because he’s tied up so much money with non-point producers – Drury, Redden, Rosival. At least he signed someone who has potential to match his contract. For Sather, that’s an improvement.

Well, when you put it that way it’s hard to argue. I can’t imagine the MSG ice is going to be too kind on his “lower body” though.

the MSG crowd might have some new fun chants if he stinks it up, so I might get my season ticket dollars worth yet!

Hey pop gonna disagree about the injuries

Word was from all of the scouts that his hip problem was 100% fixed and his groin problem was also healed (although those are always hard to tell.) He wanted a big market thats why he came to New York, but i am hearing other teams wanted him bad. Like 7 year 49 million bad, so he is healthier than you give him credit for.

well that’s the hope. but they said that about Forsberg and he continued to have problems. When a guy has 14 groin injuries and 5 hip flexors Im not so confident one hip surgery will help him long-term.

I agree as well

The story out of Minnesota was that they wanted him resigned. The surgery he had actually repaired the other side and he should be good to go now. And the groin and back injuries were no question due to the hip. Im keeping my fingers crossed. When hes playing he performs and should get that kind of contract. Let’s hope for the best. Good job by Sather to no give up any youth.

by Dekim19 on Jul 2, 2009 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

1 more thing

Knowing Sather, there is a backdoor to this contract if Gaborik cannot stay healthy.

by Dekim19 on Jul 2, 2009 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

like if he injures his groin

there is an escalator that doubles the contract to get to that 10 year 75 that he wanted

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 7:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

is that even allowed? contracts are standardized – I dont think you can have that kinda shenanigans

Yeah, Gaborik>Gomez any day, especially given the makeup of this team. Best case scenario of this team with Gomez doesn’t put us anywhere close to a cup; a healthy season from Gaborik (pending how the rest of the offseason goes) could allow us to make a real run. First line talent is hard to find, you really have to jump when you get the chance, even if they’re a risky player. I think the acquisition (and then loss) of Jagr showed us that.

by yellomellojello on Jul 1, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ah Shit

I don’t know.

On one hand the guy is seriously injury prone.

On the other hand he’s as good if not better than Heatley.

I like it. Hopefully the guy stays healthy.

He stays healthy this is a great signing. The guy is ACTUALLY worth this type of contract….if he stays healthy.

Long contract to give to a guy WHO CAN’T STAY HEALTHY!

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 1, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dont see how that’s possible. Before replacing Gomez with Gaborik, the Rangers only had about $14 M of cap space – and that’s before adding in the likely salaries of Brashear, Dubinsky, Higgins, Callahan and Zherdev. Add in those and you’re down to about 6 M free or so. And that’s without a depth defensemen and backup goalie.

I checked the rumored deal and

it has Rosival + Zherdev + other. That’s at least 8 Mill right there so actually the salaries match and the Rangers aren’t eating anything else…..

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 1, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well that assumes

Ottawa would do that deal ;)

Those FLA years should have been for NYR, if Malhotra wasn’t “untouchable.”

by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 1, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

whats the deal with Malhotra anyway? I thought he was going to blow up sometime this decade.

by Poe678 on Jul 1, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Malhotra's currently a UFA.

Blue Jackets GM Scott Towson said neither he nor Mike Peca are in the team’s plans.

So he’s very touchable.

by MatthewA on Jul 1, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is sad

He’s been injured so much, and that did not even factor into the decision making. Gomez plays (maybe not hard) but at least he’s on the ice where he can potentially contribute. Why is it ever a good idea to give a gimpy Euro a five year x 7.5mill KT.

And if we need cap space to sign people, just send Redden down to Hartford. He’ll survive on a steady diet of exports and percocet so don’t shed a tear.

Sather needs to join Mr. Thomas in Florida.

Neil would have been a homerun...

…fits into the young hungry mold. Brashear is intimidating but a bit old. Dont get me wrong, but Neil would have fit the picture better and his heart and all.

Ryan I have to ask, what would you have done differently? Mistakes have been made, and the Rangers are doing what they can to fix them. They needed scoring, they got the most talented guy out there. They weren’t going to give Hossa a 12 year deal, and if they did, we would have anarchy on our hands.

Gaborik

I get the concept of essentially trading Gomez’s contract for Gaborik’s only in terms of the 4:1 odds payoff being exactly what this roster needed; what I don’t get is Sather’s compulsive desire to throw all his chips on one iffy hand the first chance he gets. Exchanging high price role players for actual goal scorers is a must this offseason, but my guess is that Gaborik will be yet another regrettable Sather signing in the not too distant future. Let’s hope for the best, but 50 games or so of Gaborik isn’t going to help the Rangers avoid wasting yet another year of Henrik’s prime seasons any more than last year’s ill-fitting roster did.

glen sather: if he only had a brain

the rangers gave a oft injured player the highest yearly rate of any free agent signed today he has played over 65 games once sin the lockout leave it to glen not to mention how players never live up 2 their potential on rangers after signing(gomez, drury, redden, bure, anson carter, lindros…..

i'm thinking...

a line of Zherdev-Anisimov-Gaborik

and no that isn’t crazy. An all European line that brings speed and skill to the team

by b4mv01 on Jul 2, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is crazy

First of all, Anisimov will not be more than a fourth liner this year if he even makes the team. I think the first line for the Rangers this year (if the team stays the way it is now) will be Callahan, Dubinsky, Gaborik

Keep in mind Torts LOVES Callahan and Dub, he thinks they are top 6 forwards. Thats all assuming they resign Cally and Dub, but as of right now, they are 15mil under the cap, so I am positive they have the money to resign both and Korp, Betts, Zherdev.

And yes, they are 15 mil under the cap right now, check out nhlnumbers.com or outsidethegarden.com if you don’t believe me.

by Anthony J on Jul 2, 2009 2:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Anisimov will see 3rd line time

Boyle/Betts (I hope) will sit on the 4th line
