NHL News: Fredrik Sjostrom signs with the Calgary Flames

Shortly after the news broke about the Rangers signing Marian Gaborik, word came down that speedster Freddie Sjostrom had agreed to a 2 year deal with the Flames for $750K per year. After speculating on our radio show that the Rangers may just be waiting to determine the market value for a player like Sjostrom, it looks like he figured it out on his own. I really thought he would sign for more than this.

I was a big fan of Sjostrom's, I think the Rangers are going to miss his speed. While the Gomez trade was definitely a good thing for the Rangers, now coupled with the loss of Sjostrom, the Rangers have probably lost their two fastest skaters.

Good luck Freddie, you'll be missed.

Make sure to check in with Matchsticks and Gasoline, the SBNation blog on the Calgary Flames for more information.

Your telling me Glen couldn't give Sjostrom 750K

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

I think we need to be careful when we get attached to guys like this. Im less concerned about his speed and hustle – which can usually be replaced by a younger guy who might have more upside potential, then the potential impact on our PK…especially if Betts is leaving too.

Glen Sather is a Hockey Genius.

this sucks

sjostrom was probably my favorite ranger this year. and now he’s going to be on a team i hate, with players i loathe (phadouche and buttuzzi). vomit.

Get over it

Yeah Freddy was a speedy guy with a ton of heart, but you can find guys like that anywhere. The big loss will be Betts. We lost a little speed with Gomez and Sjo gone, but Gaborik is no slouch on the skates himself, and we still have a ton of speed with Cally, Korp, and Avery.

I know some people are upset that Sjo signed for so little, but really, most of you have been clamoring for the young guys to play. Sjostrom is expendable. Right now I only see 2 spots open for Anisimov and maybe Byers or Grachev, and Freddy would just crowd things.

exactly

how are the Rangers gonna be able to call up the kids with all these middling vets on the team?

Freddy was an excellent hustle guy, but if he’s blocking the way for these young guys then let him go!

Let me see. The rangers lost a guy that cant score goals and is fast and plays defense. And we are crying about this why??? Sjstrom can and will be replaced. There are plenty of players with his speed and with his limited goal scoring ability.

ok my question is

What did they Give up Al Montoya for? Players who aren’t even here anymore? Yeah, Rangers got pwned in the deal.
