When all else fails, play the "KHL" card

Thanks to Dirk over at On the Forecheck for sending this along, its an English translation of Sport Express, a Russian newspaper. Sounds like Zherdev may be playing the KHL card that has become commonplace among European hockey players unhappy with their contract situation.

Story from Sport Express

Now while the translation may not be perfect, I just have one question:

Does Zherdev really believe he had an "excellent season"?

If so, a mental examination should be part of the arbitration hearing.

Good? Maybe. Excellent? No.

I’m certainly not Zherdev’s biggest fan, but I would say he had a good season. Certainly not excellent, but for a first year in New York he was pretty solid for most of the year – he even took over a few games. People were awfully hard on his lack of playoff production, but it’s hard to have high expectations of someone who has never been there before. Regardless of what happens, it’s certainly going to be tough to lose a 24-year-old coming off a 60-point season, but I suppose its the right move so long as Dubinsky stays around.

I gave him “good”, if that translation of “excellent” is accurate though, he is delusional

the worse quote to focus on
And on what team in NHL you would like to continue your career?

- To begin with, it must be a team that has a need for me. That’s why I’ll answer your question this way: it would be nice to play on one of the teams in the division that the Rangers play in.

That is the worst case scenario that he becomes a Kovalev where he stays in the division finally is motivated to put it all together.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Although he did not have a great season desired by the blue shirt faithful, Zherdev needs to stay in new york…He will grow into the spot light and perform this year along with gaborik and drury on the power play. Give him a second chance new york…we cannot bring up another young guy this year. However do not over pay Zherdev meet in the middle to where he is happy.

Let me know

by Sportingnewskid on Jul 14, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

he is not happy in the middle as the translated article says he wont sign unless they come up to his demand.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Will be tough for Zherdev to stay in the division, at least for the money he’s asking.

Pens and Flyers don’t really have a need for him anyway, plus they’re pretty cap tight right now. He doesn’t seem to fit with the Devils, though they haven’t replaced Gionta.

That leaves the Islanders. And well, they’re not very good right now, and I don’t think a motivated Zherdev will change that all that much.

by George E. Ays on Jul 14, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

The devils do have plenty of money and do need a goal scorer. no with lou back he is certainly a defense first type coach so it would be doubtful to go there, but you never know.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

Devs have the money but you don’t look at Zherdev’s skill set and think “Devils.” That’s all I was getting at.

by George E. Ays on Jul 14, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Zhit

I agree its tough to let a 24 year old with his skills walk. i agree with the rangers that paying him 4.25 is absurd. 3.25 is just right. But he has world class stick handling.
If Zherdev didnt start the season off with a bang, and spread those 60 points out through the season it wouldnt be that frowned upon. Everyone in NY has high expectations of him, myself included. Lets give him another year to see if he improves. It was his first year on a new team.

by ImaMoose on Jul 14, 2009 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

Forget about it

They already replaced him w/ Kotalik, effectively. As constructed:

Higgins-Dubie-Gaborik
callahan-drury-kotalik
avery-anisimov-lisin
brashear-boyle- (byers)

Obviously he’s more talented than more than a few of those players, but a good majority of them are acquisitions from this offseason. And it seems a bit off-the-wall to think that Sather traded and signed for these guys just so he could kick them to the curb to make room for Zherdev.

It’s tough, but in the cap era it’s the correct move, which given Sather’s cap management, is a welcome change.

i really want to see cally and higgins play wing on the same line whether it be with dru or dubi.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, you may get your wish, as Higgins is a LW and Cally is a RW.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 14, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

problem is Lisin, and Kotalik are both RW and Gabby definitely wants to play the right side.

Avery-Dubi-Gaborik
Higgins-Drury-Cally
Lisin-Artem-Kotalik

possible or not?

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Lisin is a lefty, you can expect him to play LW. I don’t think Torts plays many people on the off-wing at even strength.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 14, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Somebody's gonna move

They have 4 RWs for 3 spots, and only 2 LWs for 3 spots. I suppose Lisin may be the more logical person to move.

But I think it’s a very good bet Kotalik-Drury are reunited. So that means:

Higgins-Dubie-Gaborik
Lisin-Drury-Kotalik
Avery-Anisimov-Callahan

I think Lisin is too fast for that line though, based on reports. So maybe Lisin-Anisimov-Callahan?

Based on Tortorella down the stretch, hell, we might see every conceivable combo. Possible in the same game.

by George E. Ays on Jul 14, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

To tell you the truth, based on what I’ve heard about Lisin, and his knack of being in the right place at the right time, I would try him out with Gabby.

higgins can certainly skate with gabby

Sooner or later the Ranger Faithful will understand what market value is.

Sooner or later….

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 14, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair

Umm…..Sather barely understands market value. How can you expect Rangers fans to?

by George E. Ays on Jul 14, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

But in all seriousness, Zherdev is worth $4 million based on market value. That’s where the number is coming from.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 14, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

as i said when kotalik was signed if he is worth 3 to sather then sather should be paying Zherdev 4. problem is now that we are paying 3 to kotalik we dont have another 4 million to give Zherdev.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

The Rangers don’t need a guy who feels like playing when he wants to. That’s a bunch of garbage and Tortorella won’t put up with that crap. The money can be better spent next year trying to re-sign Dubinsky or another D-man should they need one.

The KHL card is such an empty threat. I do not see the Rangers being significantly worse (possibly better off) with him playing in Russia. Someone who takes shifts (and playoff series) off is horrible for team chemistry and Drury should have been on top of that from Day 1.

Granted, he is a great talent, and he may score a highlight goal here and there, but to disappear for a month at a time is not what the Rangers need. They need consistent intensity and effort. Torts will bench his ass quicker than an Ovechkin wrister from the slot.

by stonecoldcory on Jul 14, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

Take Byers out of that lineup and move lisin down to have some speed on the line, and then put zherved where Lisin is….its simple…Zherdev cannot just be let go….he has potential. Hell I mean drury didnt perform last year and we arnt talking about getting rid of him are we?

by Sportingnewskid on Jul 14, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

and where do you propose to find the money under the salary cap to guess this done?

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Money is there Sather just has to be willing to rectify a mistake

Move Redden and if you cant then waive him, that makes 6.5 million right there. And if someone was willing to take Gomez someone will take Rozsival.

i dont want to do redden this year

because sather will spend the money and then there will be nothing for staal and likely dubi at this point for next year.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you 100%

they should give Redden another year then remove his contract. This way we can be players at the next free agency (the one with Kovalchuk) and then when thats over Drury only has one more year so on and so forth.

You can't just waive Redden and clear cap space like that, though.

If you waive him, the rangers still take a big cap hit, something like $2.5M per year for the life of the contract.

by stonecoldcory on Jul 15, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Plus

If you’re going to free up salary, it’d be kind of silly to use that money on Zherdev who plays the same position as the log jam already created.

Having the money free to sign Kovalchuk (a LW no less) would be a much better idea. Just the thought of Kovalchuk and Gaborik on the same line. Yikes.

by George E. Ays on Jul 14, 2009 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

anybody you put in the middle of them would over 80 assists

by b4mv01 on Jul 14, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Moral of the story..."Zherdev is no longer in BLUE."

Summary of the comments says:
1. No cap space
2. No room
3. No desire.

by NYdemo on Jul 14, 2009 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

i dont know if the kings would do it

but if they would i would take Z, Rozi and even a pick for Frolov and O’Donnell as we save 4 mil on the cap and get a LW who can play the 1st line and move Lisin down to the 4th line or even let him mix and match with Avery on 3/4.

That in the end would leave us somewhere around 2-3 mil under the cap for this year assuming dubi gets a new deal…we would also have higgins, frolov, o’donnell coming off with different decisions to be made about them which would be 6.35 mil plus the 2+ mil from this year, redden’s 6.5 and the 2.377 mil in the expiring of staal and girardi’s deals from this year. from my math that would give us approx 17 mil to go after a Kovalchuck, resign Staal, Girardi and maybe keep 1 of higgins or frolov especially with Grachev probably ready to come up.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 14, 2009 4:43 PM EDT reply actions

I think this is like the 9th time I’ve heard this proposal around the blog o sphere.

Not to be mean, or to even target you, just the proposal itself, but I mean really? They are going to take on a guy heading to UFA, an overpaid #5 defenseman, keeping in mind they just dumped Preissing, for Alex Frolov AND someone?

Seriously?

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 14, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Shame. Can’t have your cake and eat it too, because I would like to have him back a lot – on the fun side of hockey. He could be very frustrating, but for casual fans like a few of my friends last year that I got to watch hockey, Zherdev was the one that was their favorite. He’s just exciting to watch, and it’s just a shame getting him would likely mean bye-bye to others.

Avery – Dubinsky – Gaborik (Avery and Dubz play good together and Gaborik will thrive with there speed and passing skills)

Higgins – Drury – Kotalik (Drury plays good with Kotalik and Higgins will be the speed on that line.

Lisin – Anisimov – Callahan (Callahan makes any line better, Lisin might not make the 3rd line given he is a right winger and sucks on D, this might have to be a checking line so maybe Voros in Lisins place but i cant say ?

by louielounz1 on Jul 14, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Kovalchuk will likely have bigger plans than playing on a re-tooled, less salary cap stricken team on the Rangers, sorry but he’s got to be top notch and despite there being a lot of spot light in NY, it’ll have to be spread about.

Good luck though, I am sure you could lure another european who doesn’t really wanna play.

But it’s going to be a waste of money when Tort’s benches his ass every other game. I’d say $1 Million sallery with a shit load of incentives.

I guess you will have to change the "Covering the Rangers from Avery to Zherdev"

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Are the trade rumors for Kovalchuk completely dead?

If not, Z could figure into the deal. As I recall, we couldn’t give them enough NHL ready players, which we seem to have a lot of now. Zherdev, another winger (not Cally, but they might take one of our new acquisitions like Lisin or Higgins), Girardi (though I’m liking him more and more), and a prospect ready for the big club who is possibly surplus requirements (Potter?) for Kovalchuk and a draft pick or prospect doesn’t sound like a bad idea for either team to me, but I doubt we’ll see it before training camp. We could have
Kovalchuk-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Avery-Drury-Kotalik
(Lisin or Higgins, whichever stays)-Anisimov-Callahan
It might be wishful thinking, since I have no idea what ATL’s needs are, but I could get used to seeing a Kovalchuk-Dubinsky-Gaborik line.

by AllHailTheKing30 on Jul 15, 2009 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

I am currently not hearing anything about chuk coming to the rangers, but it would def be a powerhouse of a line…and hey, everyone endures some wishful thinking every once in a while….but you and me both want this to happen.

by Sportingnewskid on Jul 24, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

Fortunado…
Unfortunately, the Rangers (since Sather… or before?? Whatever) believe they can get high priced guys, slam them in the same locker room and have an instant chemistry party.
It doesn’t help that THN’s Stan Fischler (sp?) stated for 17 yrs straight “This is the Rangers’ year for a cup victory”.

I think a new philosophy should be adopted. Its sad that a Original 6 Team doesn’t get TEAM philosophy. To watch a Lindros, a Jagr, a Gomez/Drury, all show up with Huge upside, and slowly dwindle… its hard as a fan of the game to see.

The realities for the KHL (NHL defectors) players is that they rarely come back. I did think Z had a great upside, and never really managed to “bring it” while in Columbus, but I also knew going to the Rags wasn’t something that was going to have long term benefit for either him or the RAgs. They have a hard time of mining for young talent, and and even harder time developing it once it is found. I pray for Callahan and his family history that he makes it in NY… otherwise Rags fans will turn on him. He’s a young guy with some talent, bring him into the spotlight slowly.

But overall point being Kovy isn’t a TEAM player, and if you guys are worried about lining up who you have now to get the best out of them, I don;t think Kovy would be a good fit… not the RAgs Savior. There’s enough enigmatic Russian talents to go around *(Habs continue to draft them, but none have played since Perezhogin- who by the way returned to Russia) – so don’t take my comments to heart.

by Cruisin4aBruisin on Jul 25, 2009 10:04 PM EDT reply actions

Oh.. and I think with Antropov you’ve already got your quota of enigmatic Russians… so… guess Kovy’s out…lol
