Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Brendan Shanahan Is Thinking New York

Photo

According to CSN Philly, Brendan Shanahan is only interested in playing hockey for two clubs next season, the Rangers and the Devils. I'll let you take a wild guess which of the two he prefers... If you guessed the Rangers, good for you. If you guessed the Devils, well I can't help ya. Shanny loved his time in New York. The Garden crowd embraced him as one of their own and there's little doubt in my mind he'd jump at the opportunity to once again play in the Big Apple. Shanny brought a tenacity and veteran leadership that the team had previously not had. When Sather decided to let him go last summer (well not really, he yanked his chain for 4 or 5 months and led him to believe the Rangers were interested when he was never actually in their plans, but that's for another time) the team dearly missed his presence in their locker room and on the ice. I was one of, if not the biggest advocate in the Rangers blogosphere when it came to Shanny returning to the team last season. But that was then and this now, things have changed.

Brendan Shanahan is one of the all-time hockey greats. He combined scoring ability and a blue collar attitude that presently is all his own. A perfect example is when he dropped the gloves with Donald Brashear at the Garden. Even at the age of 38, Shanny felt the need to take matters into his own hands when Brashear had taken a few liberties with Jaromir Jagr. It was incredible. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen during a hockey game. Shanny can still play third line minutes effectively and could be a power play specialist. His veteran leadership is also something the Rangers need, but he's no longer the right option.

Signing Shanny would be throwing the New York version of a youth movement to the curb. Although the team might be better off with Shanny this season than say Dane Byers or Jordan Owens, it's sacrificing their development. Unfortunately Shanny is 40 and is quickly skating off into the sunset. The Rangers future is their young talent, not Brendan Shanahan.

The only way Shanny is a viable option in my eyes is if the Rangers feel Byers, Owens, Lisin, or whoever it may be is not ready to play at the NHL level. Otherwise, as difficult as it is for me to say I don't want to see Shanny don a Rangers jersey next season, they need to look from within.

This time though, let Shanny know early you're not interested Sather.

I agree

Shanny was my favorite forward on the team before he left and I would love to see him skating at the Garden again, but we have so many young forwards competing for spots, it just wont work. If he does comeback though, I admit I wouldn’t mind too much

I kinda would

I have been advocating this youth movement pretty heavily but this would just throw that back in my face.

I’m against bringing him back, I just don’t think he’s a good fit with a team that is trying to get younger and faster. Nothing against him personally, I love him as a player, but I don’t think he is what the Rangers need

Shanny

I always feel like Shanny is a good fit for the team, however we need to give these young guys a shot, but I feel as though Shanny should get involved with the organization somehow and eventually. Whether it is this year, or whenever he decides his long long career has ended.

No, no, please god no.

I don’t think elaboration is necessary.

I have too much love for Shanahan and his shot to be disappointed if he came back. I think I agree with what everyone is saying – he would only hamper the team’s future. Regardless, though, I would be lying if I said his return wouldn’t bring a smile to my face.

I dont see the point

Veteran leadership is nice, but I dont think it’s worth it to have to pay him and watch him play.

by Steeeve on Jul 15, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

just say no

This is a waste of some better player’s ice time. Shanny’s numbers were poor at best with the Devils last year. Each of his two years on the Rangers followed the same pattern—good first half, followed by injuries in the second half that greatly limited his effectiveness.

Let him be a roster issue for another team, please, and get somebody under the age of 30 into the lineup. Shanny doesn’t skate well enough to play in Torts’ system either,

Prole art threat.

4th Line?

Torts seems to only role 3 lines, when given the chance. I wouldn’t expect to see Brashear get too much ice time. What’s the down-side of having pp sniper and penalty killer with excellent positioning taking up a spot on the 4th line that won’t have a regular shift? I agree he’s lost a step, but the shot and leadership are still there. He’s a class-act and if he can move past the way Sather jerked him around last year, I think it would be great to have him back.

True, and he doesn’t play for money.

Can't go wrong with Shanahan

Class act.

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

GO GET HIM!!!!!!!!

This is one player that we should have never let go of. If it was up to me Shanahan would have been captain after Jagr had left. This guy is a proven leader on the ice as well as off the ice. We talk about grooming our young players for the future, WELL LETS GET SERIOUS. This guy is the perfect candidate to be there in the locker room day in and day out.

Get Shanny now

Look im all for the youth movement but staal, cally, and dubz arent malkin toews and crosby. Leadership is key to championships guys. I believe Shanny at 1 mill per is a no brainer. CHEAP 40 Points ‘at least’ while helping the kids out and wearing the ‘a’ in a place where fans love him. To me he is a perfect fit on a 3rd line with anisimov and cally. People will say hes slow yata yata, but if you watched him last year he contributed alot to the devils and wasnt that slow. Y Not? is byers or -30 lisin that great?

If $ works...

No youngster is developing on the 4th line in Torts’ system. If Shanny will accept 4th line money or low third line type, then it’s worth it. Even if he was a healthy scratch once in a while to rest the old bones and give a youngster some ice time, at minimum salary it would absolutely work.

Salary Cap

before we start discussing about Shanny’s possible return, let’s sign all our necessary components of our team and see if we have room for him? I kind of doubt we will. Plus if he does end up coming here, it will have to be for 2 mil or less in my opinion- because of cap issues.

"Jaromir Jagr.... it's a POWERPLAY GOAL!"

by rmc235 on Jul 15, 2009 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

Last time he played for the Rangers in 07-08 he made $2.5 million then, so now I would imagine his salary wouldn’t be too much of a burden. For $800,000 he played 34 games last season, 41.4% of the season amount, plus of course the playoffs. A good piece of that salary we can assume was there because of his leadership and playoff presence. Plus, that wasn’t his choice of team to play for that year anyway. I would think $1.5M at the absolute best, but more around $1M I would hope.

He brings a little of this to the team:

No, no longer fighting like that likely. But the heart and spirit is in him – this is a guy that still really wants to win. Having people who really want to win, especially in New York, is something we don’t see enough of. He’s a good mentor to have around these guys.

Maybe we’ll get another picture like that in a practice this year. =P

Last I checked

about he was listed at $800,000 but I don’t know if those numbers are skewed cause he signed in Jersey mid season. I doubt it will take more than a million, and i seriously doubt he’ll be here that long. yall make a good point he could play well on the fourth line.

by AllHailTheKing30 on Jul 15, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

Hell of a shooter, but sooooooo slow

I would love for him to bring our powerplay back, but he’s way too slow for this new system. Plus the thought of Shanny and Brashear on the same line made me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

by WalkerNYRanger on Jul 15, 2009 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

4th line guy/coach

maybe shanny could play the 4th line and share time with byers (if he gets the spot) and brashear…i think putting shanny in and out of the lineup might keep him fresh…also the nights where he isnt playing he could stand on the bench and help teach the younger guys (i dunno if he’d like that but its just a thought)…I say this because I saw komisarek be on the bench standing with the coaches when he was hurt with the canadians last year…shanahan may also help drury settle down as captain because shanny has a ton of leadership qualities

by nutz_35 on Jul 15, 2009 2:57 PM EDT reply actions

Please NO!

I fell asleep whenver Naslund or later on Antropov had the puck in the neutral zone. These guys are just too damn slow and its not needed.

The Rangers have been doing well with the speed and that’s what they need. Brian Boyle is big and Im not 100% but he’s probably not that fast.

Say no to Shanny, but Id be sad to see him go to the Devils then fight Brashear on the Rangers.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 15, 2009 4:22 PM EDT reply actions

I see no problem here

First time post here.

I see no problem signing shanny if he is signed for fourth line money. His leadership qualitys are invaluable and unmatched by anybody on the team outside of Drury. Shanny could also help spark the powerplay. Shany-Drury- Gabs( Kotilek on the point) powerplay line would be in my mind more effective then last year. All the talk about shanny being too slow and old is irrelevent since Torts only really rolls three lines so the fourth line sees limited action. He would have limited playing time outside of powerplay situations. Also he has a nasty release on his wrist shot which is very effective in the shootout. This could help the Rangers……considering every game we play goes into a shootout. In my mind the positives far outweight the negatives for signing him….if the money is right.
