Ranger News: Mike Sullivan to be Rangers Assistant Coach
From our friend Steve Zipay over at Newsday, Mike Sullivan is to join the Rangers. Here is the entire story:
The long-awaited deal for John Tortorella's former assistant coach, Mike Sullivan, to join the Rangers is complete and is expected to be announced Thursday, according to a source.
As mentioned on the Blue Notes live chat today, we expected it to happen since the end of the season.
Sullivan, who was on the bench with Tortorella in Tampa, had been under contract with the Lightning through June 30, and Rangers brass were told not to comment.
He played college hockey at Boston University and was drafted 67th overall by the Rangers in 1987 and played 11 years in the NHL.
As the Bruins head coach in 2003, he posted a 41-19-15-7 record, 104 points and a first place finish in the Northeast Division, but after struggling in subsequent seasons, was axed in June 2006. The Massachusetts native will be the Rangers associate coach.
No surprise here, everyone knew this was going to happen it was just a matter of time. There was thoughts that this would have happened last year when Tortorella was hired, but it never panned out. Sullivan is Tortorella's right hand man so you know that he will fit the system. I personally like the tandem, do you?
(Note: No picture of Sullivan so take one of Tortorella instead.)

I voted Yes… but… kind of wish Renney was offered (was he?) an assistant coaching job with the Rangers…. kind of like the best of both worlds y’know? Offense and Defense at it’s best.

Ugh...Renney
I hope he freezes up in Edmonton.
Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Best of two other worlds too – exciting and boring
"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"

Dont get me started on that idiot Renney
I applaud him for his defensive grasp of the game, but other than that the guy is an idiot.

dont jump on
… rmc’s back. I get what he is saying.
I liked Tom Renney but the team wasnt working under him any more. He got Jagr motivated again. He made a Rangers roster of virtually unknowns and outcasts + Jagr into a playoff team. Yes the coming out of hank in net helped. Yes Jagr scoring a team record 56 goals helped, but it was all under Renneys watch.
I hope Renney does well wherever the hell he is now, but I dont think its right for ranger fans to get on him.
Plus… for assisstant coaches, anything is better than Perry Pern. Who was the other guy i cant think of off the top of my head. Mike Pelino? something like that? I dunno. These guys gotta make the power play work.
Prediction for this season, regardless of who is coaching… the PP is above avg, and the PK is terrible.(they lost 90% of their pk which was 2nd best in the league)

I’m sorry – I didn’t mean to come off that way to rmc235. I felt bad for Renney when we fired him, though I did want him gone. He never missed the playoffs – something our previous slew of coaches couldn’t say at all. I just think he didn’t try anything new and for the 07-08 year and his tenure this year (excluding the Rangers excellent start) were just very, very boring. Those 1-0 games and 2-1 games, so frustrating. I remember even Dubinsky made a comment or two that the games were very boring. On that premise, I wanted someone who was a bit more exciting – someone who would gave fans a little more fun.
Sorry RMC235, I didn’t mean to disrespect or anything, and I’m not saying a Tortorella/Renney combo behind the bench is a bad idea at all.

Renney single handedly lost us the series against Pittsburgh last year
With his decision making. 3-0 lead in game one. Pitt scores, Mellon arena goes crazy. CALL A TIME OUT. Ok 3-1, 10 seconds later 3-2. NOW YOU MUST CALL A TO. But no, he allows Pitt to continue with the momentum and they win the game. And this went on all series long.
His team was unwatchable last year on offense, they had no spunk or organization to their game. Torts comes in with the garbage Renney worked with and got them to play with an extra step.
Adios Renney, have fun with Patty Quinn.

Why place blame on Renney?
Blame the damn players.
Plus, my above comment, best of both worlds- Torts on offense, Renney on defense. And HA! No one here was disrespectful at all! Where’d you all get that idea? CD no need to apologize fro anything, and ImaMoose is right on some points.
I loved Renney. Really, I don’t think he did anything at all wrong. But when the players stop producing, the coach can’t do anything! What can you do as a coach but work on everything and hope for improvement? The players loved Renney too, but management (‘cough’ Sather ‘cough’) can’t fire the players when they aren’t producing, and the blame is set on the coach. Always.
And hey, I’m all for coaches with great success between them.. so thumbs up.

I don't understand the hate for Renney
Its not his fault that other than Lundqvist, he’s got a bunch of ingredients that just don’t work.
He made a team that employs Michael Rosival and Wade Redden, and before that Marek Malik, into a pretty good defensive team.
I agree he needed to go cuz the players just weren’t producing, but he’s an idiot now?
No, Isiah Thoma…..Glen Sather has been the moron all these years. Recetly he’s been better, but Renney was probably the best thing to happen to the Rangers in a long time.
I always love how NY fans are so quick to throw the coach under the bus.

Renney was too loyal to his veterans, the same veterans who stopped playing for him and cost him his job. Renney can’t be faulted for the ill suited roster he was handed.

Agreed to RMC and FreeBradshaw
Renney didn’t not work out because of his system. Renney didnt work out because Sather FORCED offensive players into a defensive system. He had his flaws but …

Turning into Tampa Bay North, I see. Hopefully it’ll work out for you guys. It was fine in Tampa until new ownership took over – despite the poor showing under Torts his last season there.
It’s not a bad move – although I wish that Sully had stayed with the Lightning. Of course, I wish Torts was still there, too. Not that Tocchet’s a bad coach necessarily (although we’ll find out this season for sure), but I loved Torts old school “my way or the highway” attitude. But what can you do, right?
