Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

New York Rangers Spotlight: Michal Rozsival

At season's end, Rob did an analysis of each player on the roster, and gave some thoughts on what lies ahead for each one. Since so many of you are new to Blueshirt Banter, we thought we would bring some of those profiles to you again. Today we have Rob's look at Michal Roszival:

#33 - Michal Rozsival (Age: 30) - Grade: C+

Rozsival had a dip in production this season, only netting 8 goals with 22 assists for 30 points and a -7 rating. He was virtually invisible offensively in the playoffs, but he did have to deal with some injury troubles and played well in his own end. 2008-2009 was supposed to be a big season for Rozival, and as I stated with the dip in production he was a bit of a disappointment. I could see a new offensive system benefitting Rozival and returning him to some old form, but he will have to work hard to prove his worth with young Ranger defensive prospects waiting for their chances.

Final thought from Jim: With Rozsival's high salary, he was the subject of every real or imagined trade rumor that floated its way down the Internet. At this point, it appears the Rangers are set to go into the season with Roszival on the roster.

Contract Status: Rozsival is signed through the end of the 2012 season at $5M per year.

Same old..........

story. Another over priced, underacheiving veteran player that does not justify his salary. Notice a trend here? Let face it boys, Rangers are handcuffed till these lame contracts run out or we find other retarded GMs out there to unload these players on. The Bob Gai neys of the world dont come around too often. Yeah, good luck…………….Im sick to my stomach right now. Thanx Glen!!!

going to disagree with you here. Remember a few things:

1. He was coming off hip surgery last year, and then gutted it out on a knee injury late in the season. He should come into camp 100% healthy for the first time in a long time.
2. His durability: 10 games missed in 4 seasons, pretty damn good.
3. As has been pointed out, he was paired with Redden for much of last season. I’m not sure Orr in his prime could have done much with Redden as his partner, the way he played.
4. His overall numbers with the Rangers have been solid. Not spectacular, but solid.

I’m no big Rozsvial fan, but I don’t think his contract is anywhere near as bad as some of the other ones out there. He’s a solid top 4 defenseman.

Numbers aside

Roszival has never been a defensive stud. Granted he was playing with Redden, but Redden is not the one making Crosby and Malkin blow right by him one-on-one.

His decision making was atrocious in the offensive zone, passing when he had a shooting lane, and shooting with traffic all over the place. I can barely count the number of times he shot it right into a guy’s skates and gave up an easy breakaway or odd man rush.

by Steeeve on Jul 17, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

We all fell in love with his shot when he scored the OT goal against Buffalo. Defensively he’s just “Ehh” to me, but I like to see him rip shots (more so 07-08).

The LA Kings game from this year was pretty much the summary of what I like in him. But watching him on the PP this year losing pucks and letting people get the SH goals was just sickening.

Overpriced, yes.

Underrated, definitely.

Watch what happens to the PP when this guy starts to shoot more often.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 17, 2009 12:15 PM EDT reply actions

Haven’t we been hearing that since he got here? If he shot as frequently as he turned the puck over in his own end we might not be having this discussion.

by NYdemo on Jul 19, 2009 7:55 AM EDT up reply actions

problem is he never really shoots…maybe if he isn’t traded torts and sullivan can teach him when to shoot

The KHL wouldnt even give this guy half the contract he is making now

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

The KHL gave Chris Simon and Darius Kasparaitis a contract that is worth over, i think, 2 million each…they would pay definitely pay Rozy MORE than what were paying him.

I was trying to look for a comparison contract, but bm4 beat me to the comment, bottom line I agree, the KHL would pay him that much or real close to it.

I was being sarcastic

I’m hoping the KHL gives him a big contract.

I would like to keep him in New York. He is a good defenseman and Jim was 100% correct. He is finally going to come into camp fully healed.

50/50

I don’t have strong feelings either way about him. He’s a definitely a top 4 D man for the Rangers, but he’s being paid like a #1. The nice thing is the split in opinions about him, which lead me to believe he might actually be marketable should the Rangers decide to move his contract to free some cap space or roster space.

Of course, the easiest and more effective way to free either type of space would be to waive Redden. I’d rather have Morris and few million extra dollars to sign, say Zherdev, then have Redden. But it looks like Torts and Sather are committed to giving Redden another chance. Not sure why he gets another chance while Zherdev, the most talented player on the team last year, will be shown the door. Neither showed up every night, so for the sake of consistency, ditch both or at least keep the one who can help.

by Blueshirts Rock on Jul 17, 2009 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

8m?

Rozy is paid like a #1 on most teams. There’s only a handful of defenseman who currently make 7-8m. They’re usually Norris finalists.

Hell, Bouwmeester couldn’t even crack 7m with his new deal. Mike Green makes less than Rozsival.

Redden’s contract is a joke, but Rozsival’s isn’t far behind. It’s much closer to correct since he’s the rangers best offensive defenseman (and that’s really what makes a #1, unless he’s completely useless defensively)

by George E. Ays on Jul 17, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, that was a good argument Blueshirts Rock. In my opinion, Redden was MUCH more disappointing but maybe to others that’s debatable.

“Not sure why he gets another chance while Zherdev, the most talented player on the team last year, will be shown the door.”

Because Redden is already under contract…

by Steeeve on Jul 17, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s the substantive difference? Redden has a 2-way deal and his 6 mill salary won’t count against our cap if he’s down in the minors. Zherdev’ is a RFA and is not free to sign just anywhere.

Slightly off topic, I don’t recall seeing a single RFA sign with another team, which sort of reminds me of a collusion lawsuit MLB had to (unsuccessfully) defend against in the 1980’s.

by Blueshirts Rock on Jul 17, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Lidstrom makes 7 million and Rafalski (there number 2 Defensman) makes around 5 million. Redden is “our number one defensman” (in terms of salary) and Rozy is paid as our number 2

Im not to mad at him, at least he showed up more so than redden, gomez and naslund given their contracts. Little note … Rangers were a top ten defense last year sure henrik was 90% the reason we were but give the d men a little more credit. As far as getting rid of rozy, its not gunna happen, im pretty sure were the only team that likes him mgmt wise. Look defense is number one so if these guys stop crosby, ovechkin, staal etc. im happy but if they leave king H out to dry im not, stats out the window, defense first. right?

by louielounz1 on Jul 17, 2009 3:35 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

We aren't defense first anymore....

We are all about taking chances. And half way through the season Lundqvist is going to die of exhaustion from giving up 30 odd man rushes a night. But atleast the games won’t be boring anymore.

As far as rosey is concerned, I hope he at least get’s some consistency down. Play good all the time so you can be our #1 d-man, or play shitty all the time and get booed off of broadway. Hopefully it’s the first option because he’s still got a great shot on the blue line, even if it led to more short-handed goals last year than PP. I hope they pair him wisely too.

Blue Notes said Rangers offered Ryan Callahan, Mike Del Zotto and Ryan McDonagh for Dany Heatley.

Wow, thankfully that trade did not occur. I have a problem with trading two A prospects and a player like Callahan.

That’s not supported by what Bryan Murray said though.

Well American

Zipay said it was a talk radio rumor, and to take it with a grain of salt. I don’t believe this beause Sather said he was sticking to his guns and not trading the youth. Remember that they held Callahan above Dubinsky in the trade spectrum.

Can anyone answer

why Glen Sather will go out and throw ridiculous amounts of money to players that do not warrent the contracts they have……Gomez, Drury, Redden, Kotalik, Rosie….etc. and then nickle and dime other players that might deserve some consideration? Look at the whole Avery saga. Granted it all worked out in the end cuz slats was able to get him back at 50% of his contract. But there is a heart and soul guy just dangling out there named Blair Betts. Has Sather even considered offering him a contract? Who was our top penalty killer last year? Who was one of our best defensive players? Who did you want taking a important face off in the defensive zone? Who was one of our best checking centers? Dont offer this man anything but throw over 6 mill to Redden?!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to shove that god damn cigar down Sathers throat! Your not gonna win anything w/o role players in this league. Dont expect the Rangers to have a top 5 pk this year boys. Somebody tell me something please………………….
