Ranger News: Examining the Signings

With money back in Glen Sather’s hands once again—after the Gomez trade—it was expected for Ranger fans to be skeptical of what he would do with it. And in the beginning it seemed as though Sather was going to prove those skeptics correct. When the Donald Brashear signing hit the fan many of you were upset. Why let Colton Orr—a blue chip player who works hard every shift go—for a cheap hit artist who is 10 years older.  Then the Gaborik signing came into play and everything started to make some sense. So let’s dive right in.

While you were listening to the Radio show, and if you didn’t then you better next time, you heard me call the Brashear signing a great one; now let me explain why. At first glance it doesn’t make any sense, but when you sift through his baggage you see what Sather was getting at. Last year Lundqvist was hit and bumped regularly, along with most of the team, as other teams tough guys took liberties. And although Colton Orr was a great teammate he was never one to settle the score. Enter Brashear, the single most intimidating hockey player since Tiger Williams, to take care of that. No more hits on Lundqvist after the whistle, no more liberties on Callahan or Zherdev; at least not without retribution. Even with all of this fans still did not understand why Brashear has to be signed after the Rangers acquired—former LA King tough guy—Brian Boyle, another guy who will knock out some teeth.

Enter Marian Gaborik the sniper the Rangers—and their fans—have been begging for. All of a sudden the Rangers have some cargo they need to protect and who better than Donald Brashearand Brian Boyle? Now do not get me wrong, I was and am 100% against the cheap shots Brashear is known for. The fact that he is wearing a Ranger’s jersey doesn’t change the fact that those are unacceptable, and you will see me keep true to this until his contract expires.

Onto Gaborik. Now some people might thing that the 5 year 7.5 million dollar contract is too steep for the oft-injured sniper but I disagree. Gaborik, when healthy, is top 3 snipers in the league; behind Kovalchuk and Ovechkin. If you disagree with me name the players that feed Gaborik the puck ...  Exactly, I thought so.  Gaborik will help the power play become lethal, and he will help round out the lines because the Rangers finally have a legit 1st line winger. 5 years might seem like a lot but Remember that he was originally asking for 10. And if that’s not enough for you then think about his age, he is only 27 which means he is entering the prime of his career.

Now let’s quickly discuss the injuries. Word from those I listen to tell me that his hip injury is 100% healed. They also say that his groin injury is also healed, although those tend to linger so he will have to be careful. Last year was his injury year, there should be no problems from here on out. If you need more proof look at this from Steve Zippay at Newsday. (Look at this well it is very telling. The Rangers team doctors are very prestegious and would have evaluated him thouroughly, we can trust what they say.)

One glitch in the picture could be Gaborik’s health. In four of the last five years, he has played 65 games or less. But Sather said the team’s doctors had evaluated him and spoke to the surgeons who performed hip surgery last season.

“The first game he played against us, he was dangerous anytime he was on the ice,” said Sather. “We looked at medical reports, he’s very healthy.” Mario Lemieux and Michal Rozsival had the same surgery,” Sather said. “We don’t expect any problems.”

End of the day grades (I know you love these)? I give Sather an A overall. The Brashear signing was great now that I know that Gaborik is on-board. And guess what? The Rangers saved cap! And now the Rangers have source fir the coming free agencies.

Other Ranger news: Freddie Sjostrom is gone, went to Calgary for 2 years. Betts is rumored to be gone but as Jim says its hockey anything can happen. Expect Callahan, Dubinsky, Zherdev and all the others offered qualifying deals to be signed within the coming weeks. Zippay reported that Sather said that:

Our RFA's are protected. Dubinsky. Callahan, Potter, Zherdev, Korpikoski, Byers, etc. Said they had enough money to cover them and he didn't think anyone was going to take a run at them at this stage....

And for you Sather haters word is that the Heatley deal ended when Ottawa demanded Dubinsky and Callahan. I personally applaud Sather for sticking to his guns and not trading the kids. He did very well this off season, so far, nothing to complain about. Things are starting to heat up, I am excited ... are you?

The Rangers will be an exciting ‘young’ team to watch this season. I’m satisfied with the signings and trades thus far. I can’t wait to see which one of the D-Men come up. Sangs? Gilroy? Either way, I look at this team as a fast paced, hard hitting club … and we’re young! I do think a line with Zherdev and Gaborik would be exactly what Zherdev needs to light that match on fire.

by Poe678 on Jul 2, 2009 5:30 AM EDT reply actions

Dubinsky AND Callahan?

Yea, Sather stuck to his guns there.

I like that idea. Even if Callahan and Dubi are really nothing more than 2-3rd line guys, they are still integral parts of the team and you don’t trade both at the same time….UNLESS you are going after a Heatley type player….Heatley AND Gaborik would have looked quite intimidating on one line! Even if it only would have lasted a week after both go down with injuries…

I still have some hope for that Heatley deal. i think that the Sens still have to deal him so maybe the Rangers can sneak back in.

Obviously Dubi and Callahan are off the table, so maybe we’ll be able to pawn off Rosival and Zherdev to them?!!!

Tho I would have to say

further readining into what others think of Heatley, Im glad they didn’ trade for him.

The guy’s an a-Hole. Gaborik just gets injured. Hopefully, that’s done.

heater/gabs

The Rangers could very well still be in on Heatley. Their relationship is completely severed and there is no way hes a Senator next season. Heatley is the kind of guy who will say no to the Oilers just to spite Bryan Murray.

It’s been said though that Heatley wants to be traded to New York. There’s something to be said for that.

as for Gaborik well lets glass groin holds up

If they were we would be handcuffed again with the cap.

Dont forget Rick Nash and Kovalchuk are free agents next year, maybe Sather woos one of them?

we still are until at least one of rozy and redden is gone

we have enough to sign the rfa’s (higgins, dubi, cally, boyle, zherdev) bring up gilroy and another d-man this year, but we still need to lose cap next year.

Honestly if i had to pick between Gaborik and Heatley

I take the Gaborik (when healthy). Like i said in the post who sets up Gaborik? And who has been setting up Heatley. Exactly lol.

Chris Drury

…I think its really that simple.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Center

Our problem now is that, without Gomez, we don’t have anything resembling a #1 center and playmaker. I couldn’t see anyone in particular amongst free agents so it makes me wonder if Sather will look to make a trade (I assume he’d still like to be rid of the Rozi contract). If that’s true, what available playmaking centers are there? Is it possible he brings Nylander back?

by Lunkwill Fook on Jul 2, 2009 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

Don't really need a "#1" Center with this guy

Gomez was NOT that anyway.

Of course Id like one to C for him, but what’s wrong with Drury?

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

An overall grade of an A?

Look, I’ve climbed down from the ledge after Gaborik arrived, but I don’t think that qualifies for an automatic A.Sather didn’t nail down his plan A (Heatley), and he’s gambling on Gabby’s health. He deserves credit for essentially turning Gomez into Gaborik, Brashear, Higgins, and McDonagh – but Gaborik wasn’t the preferred course.

A solid B grade, fine. But an A grade says this is the ideal scenario, which it’s not. Of course, there’s still time to get that grade bumped up.

by Matthew Artus on Jul 2, 2009 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

what you mean is

he turned Gomez, Naslund retiring and Orr into Gaborik, Higgins, Brashear and McDonagh. still a fine turnover, but lets not act like he spent all this money just from Gomer.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 2, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's a question:

Does anyone know how Gabby’s contract is structured? I’d like it a lot more if it’s heavily front loaded.

by Lunkwill Fook on Jul 2, 2009 9:43 AM EDT reply actions

Why?

the cap hit is the same, and its only a 5 year deal. The issues are the same regardless of the weighting of the actual cash payments.

by poploser on Jul 2, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly

the only difference is that if it is frontloaded it might make a trade easier to one of the cheaper teams that wants to meet the minimum salary requirements, but not actually pay that much salary.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 2, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

The point is: if it’s front loaded, then the last few years are easier to eat if Gaborik’s health becomes a liability. Thus, the five year deal becomes effectively, say, a three year deal. Look at Hossa’s contract. It’s for 12 years but the last four years he’s playing for peanuts. They could eat the salary and free up the $5.2 million in cap room no problem.

by Lunkwill Fook on Jul 2, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont think it works that way. If you read page 205 of the CBA, there’s a formula for determining the amount of a “cap hit” on a buyout, and its structured to protect against a situation where a team paid more in actual cash salary in a year than it was charged against the cap in that year. So a front-loaded contract allows a team to delay the cap hit, but it doesnt allow it to ignore the cap hit

I did some quick math on Gaborik’s contract as we think it is (spread evenly over the 5 years), vs. one where the contract was front-loaded ($10 M, $10 M, $10 M, $3.75M, $3.75). In that case, if he were bought out after year 3, you’d have two different Cap implications under the Buy Out rules. I put up a picture of that analysis here. The bottom line is that in the front-loaded scenario, you get more of a cap hit than you do in the evenly-spread contract in Gaborik’s case.

I think the real benefit to structuring a long-term contract for players under 35 is not that you can buy it out cheap against the Cap, but that you can get a player to retire and give up all those Cap issues. If a player retires the team has no Cap liability for the salary. So big deal if Hossa is signed until he’s 42 – he probably wont play that long, and retirement will completely wipe his Cap hit off Chicago’s books.

I will add that I think this is right, based on my quick reading of the CBA over lunch!

I really think the commentary on this site (and all SBNation sites) is top notch, but thinking Brashear is going to stop anyone from taking “liberties” against players is just not going to come true. The players who cross those lines are, generally, not the goons on the team. Sure every once in a while a goon will run someone and get jumped and then have to fight the other goon later. But guys like Ruutu, Avery, Pronger, are simply not “afraid” of being punched by Brashear. All we’ve done there is replace one goon with another goon, to put on some fighting exhibitions 10 times a year with the other teams goon.

Plus

Torts likes to play a 3 line game, I don’t see Brashear playing on any of those, so I really don’t get the signing, they just got Boyle from the Kings.

by DarthRichter on Jul 2, 2009 10:27 AM EDT reply actions

10/10 is too high

I’m happy about Cally and Dubi being on the team next year instead of Heatley, and it seems we’re all in agreement on that. It also seems that we all agree that Gaborik’s skill set is absolutely tremendous, and that he could be the game changing sniper we’ve been needing. We do however, need to realize that one of our biggest assets last year, our PK will be almost completely dismantled if we lose Betts, after Gomez and Sjostrom are gone. I like the upgraded offense, but we sacrificed a lot of speed, hustle, and solid two way play to get it. I say 8/10 at best.

WAY TO MUCH $$$

TSN reporting Antropov has agreed to 4 year, just over $16 mil with Atlanta

by Poe678 on Jul 2, 2009 11:39 AM EDT reply actions

really?

that’s not all that bad IMO.

If that’s what he was asking from the Rangers Id be pissed to let him go for THAT!

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I think thats basically where the market should be for a guy like that – 2nd liner, produces 25 goals, 55 points.

unless that players name is Chris Drury, of course!

yea.

by that logic Drury is making what he should then.

Cuz Drury gets 55 pts+, and is an excellent PK man, unlike Antro.

Richards

I would love to have Brad Richards here. A big center that moves the puck and can score as well. He is a bigger better version of Gomez. He also has a cannon from the point on the PP. He is the guy we should get. He becomes the 1 center and that drops Drury to a line were he doesnt need to act like a number 1. He never has been and never will be. I would love to see Heatley here also. If the price is Dubinsky then so be it. I like the way he plays but he will never be Dany Heatley. Send Dubinsky and Rozsival over to Ottawa and get this guy. Avery,Zherdev,Heatley,Gaborik,Callahan. That is 5 solid wingers right there and the cost would be Dubinsky and Rozsival. That needs to get done. That makes this team a very tough team to defend. I would even consider giving Anisimov a shot with Gaborik and Zherdev. Also Zherdev might actually flourish with a guy like Gaborik. He will get some of the pressure taken of of him and has a guy that can skate with him.

by zamis on Jul 2, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

Wait for kovalchuk

First off any argument in favor of the Brashear signing is laughable.Seeing him in
a Ranger sweater will be vomit inducing.Gaborik will bury the puck in close. They would
be smart to wait til mid-season and take a shot at Kovalchuk or Richards who both play
hard and aren’t afraid to play in traffic,a trait most Ranger forwards severely lack.Zherdev
and Antropov will not survive under Torterella so no sense holding on to them.Losing Betts and Sjostrom is really going to hurt, especially with Brashear taking dumb penalties….Sather….D+

I disagree fully

If you were listening to the Radio show (ill assume you were) then you would know that the Rangers need a thug who can go out and knock someones teeth out.

You think the Flyers, Devils or Penguins are getting smaller? You think Pronger wont take his liberties and cheap shots? Well when our rivals respective thugs go after Gaborik and co. you will be glad yo uhave Brashear to lay down the law.

It is somehting we missed badly last year. Now we have it. Sather A.

Why is a GOON worth 1.4Mill?

I’m a little uncertain, given the hard cap in place, why any team would pay anything above the minimum for a fighter/enforcer. This is especially true on a team that will role 3 lines. An agitator like Sean Avery, who has speed, a shot, and some hands, I understand paying a few bucks. But there have to be tons of guys in the Jrs. and minor leagues who know how to box on ice. This signing was not needed.

Giving 7.5 Mill to an injury prone player does not make for an ‘A.’ Most respectfully, you guys are drinking the MSG cool-aid.

I dont know if you have been watching the same team I have been

But the Gaborik signing was a great one. First off Gaborik was evaluated by TEAM doctors. Do you think that they lied in order to let Sather sign him? And secondly who would you have gone after? Heatley? Enjoy giving up Dubinsky, Callahan, or Staal.

I applaud Sather for not giving up the young guys and signing Gaborik for 5 years instead of 10. Sorry but no MSG cool-aid here.

Been Watching Long Tyme

The Team drs saw someone who is healthy today. That has no bearing on his propensity, demonstrated over his career, to get injured. You can’t, even with a reference to a higher power’s opinion, change historical fact with conjecture about the future. Moreover, there are tougher athletes and more injury prone athletes. He, unfortunately, falls into the latter category because of his track-record.

You are quite biased, understandably so, if you think Dubby is more important to hold onto than getting Heatley. Staal and Callahan have more going on, but similarly, if we could trade one of these guys and a Redden or Rosi to land Heatley, then Sather would have pulled off the deal. Sather was unwilling to part with two or three of them. That doesn’t make him a genius or an ‘A’ general manager.

I too applaud Sather for not signing my 101 y/o grandmother to a ten year contract at 7.6 million dollars. But to use his rejection of an outlandish or even stupid hypothetical scenario to define greatness is transparently poor logic showing a bias towards MSG mgmt.

Finally, if you look in the mirror you’ll see a red ring around your lips. Thusly, I conclude that you are a MSG cool-aid chugger.
