Ranger News: Rangers Sign Sam Klassen

Photo

This just in from New York Ranger world. From the Rangers official website the team has agreed to terms with Sam Klassen, a WHL stay at home defenseman. Here is some of the highlights from the site:

Klassen, 20, skated in 72 games with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League (WHL) last season, registering two goals and 18 assists for 20 points, along with 92 penalty minutes. He established career-highs in games played, goals and plus-minus rating (plus-27). Klassen ranked fourth among team defensemen in assists and fifth in points.  He also finished fourth on the club with 92 penalty minutes, while his plus-27 rating ranked seventh on the Blades.

The Watrous, Saskatchewan native recorded a season-high, three-game assist streak from November 22 against Brandon to November 30 at Prince George, collecting six assists over the span.  Klassen tied his career-high for most assists in a game with three assists in the final game of the streak.  In addition, he recorded one assist and 10 penalty minutes in seven postseason contests with Saskatoon.

Well here comes another defensive prospect. As Jim just told me "the defensive dorms in training camp is going to be quite full." And now for you're entertainment here is a video of Klassen and Brian Sommers exchanging haymakers in an awesome fight. (Klassen is in white)

And here is Klassen ruining a forward's existence with an unbelievable hit:

I’ll tell you what, I know zilch about him, other than what we researched in the last 15 minutes, but it looks like this kid has one hell of a mean streak in him. That hit in the second video knocked the taste out of the winger’s mouth

Young Defensemen

It looks like the Rangers plan to carry on with a youth movement on the defensive end of the puck. I guess the lineup will have at least two or maybe three kids on it this season.

If you are under the age of 22, and can skate, I would send the Rangers a video of yourself

That was a mean looking hit

I’ve never heard of him before this, but I’m starting to like him already. It’ll be interesting to see if he makes the team out of camp, since none of our current d-men are hitters like this kid is. By the way Jim, nice tag for the second video.

This kid sure does have some pent up anger in him…fits well in a Rangers uniform. Especially since basically none of our Defensemen can fight their way out of a wet paper bag haha

i wouldnt expect him to make the team this year

Sanguinetti, Del Zotto, Potter, Sauer, Heikkinen and others are much better prospects. But you never know about next year.

True...

But just imagine a few years from now. Redden and Roszival are gone. Out top D-Pair is Staal and McDonagh with our second pair being Girardi and MDZ and our third pair being Sangs and Gilroy. To be honest any of those three can arguably a top D-Pair. (insert Heineken, Williams, and the rest wherever basically as a 7th d-man)

I like this move by Sather, it is most likely to replace the D prospects that will be called up this year.

Rosy,Redden and maybe Girardi gone?

I could be wrong but the Rangers are loading up on young defenseman. We all don’t know what the cap is going to be and Marc Staal is a free agent. They could just put Redden in Hartford or trade Rosy. However signing Girardi may be a problem also. With Staal and Chris Higgins both Free agents they may need to move on from Danny if he wants to much money. I have a feeling a trade is brewing and maybe they are loading for that. I guess we will just wait with baited breathe for big Glen to make his next move.
