2009 NHL Free Agency: Who's still around on Day 3?

Today could be a semi-busy day in free agency, a few of the big names are expected to make their decisions today, let's take a look at a few of them:

Saku Koivu: The Minnesota Wild have presented him with an offer to play with his brother Mikko, but according to The Fourth Period, the Rangers and Devils have also submitted multi-year deals.

Rusian Fedetenko: The Penguins are hoping to keep him, his decision is expected today.

Alex Kovalev:  Looks like Alex's run in Montreal is over after the Habs added Mike Cammalieri, Scott Gomez, and Brian Gionta. Kovalev was reportedly read to accept a 2 year deal from the Canadiens on the first day of free agency, but he walked away from the deal. The Kings could be a player for Kovalev. The Rangers still need scoring, would they be interested in Kovalev: Round 3?

Some of the other notable names still out there:

Maxim Afinogenov: RW

Miroslav Satan: RW

Alex Tanguay: LW

Anterio Nittymaki: G

Mikael Samuelsson: C

Petr Sykora: RW

Here is the list of the top ten free agents (by salary) still available at each position, courtesy of Slap Shot at the NY Times.

Afinogenov...

absolutely not.

I still kinda like the idea of Koivu.

A few other names would OK IMO like Sykora, maybe even Mike Comrie (tho I doubt 3rd line center is s big need) or maybe Jason Williams (if we’re going with talented injury prone guys).

One player that would be nice would be Taylor Pyatt. Unlike Antropov, he actually plays as big as he is. He wouldn’t cost as much I wouldn’t think either

I wouldn’t mind Sykora either, he still puts up solid numbers, doesn’t command a high salary, and would be a boost to the power play (13 PPG this season)

I love the idea

of Sykora coming back to to Broadway, we didnt really give him a chance the first time around, hes a sniper, hes got speed and he puts up good numbers. At 2.5 a yr, which is about all we have left at this point, i’d take him quick.

by Anthony J on Jul 3, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Petr Sykora for 2-2.5 looks great right now

Sykora is a very talented player and I think would flourish with Gaborik.

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

They both play RW, and wouldn’t be on the same line.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 3, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought Sykora plays all over?

LW, C, RW..tho more of a RW of course.

Or am I mixing him up with Brian Rolston again?

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 3, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Sykora is good, but we’ve already had him in the Jagr era, i think Afinigenov needs a team that can get him motivated enough to play at the top of his game, and working with dubinsky and callahan just might make that happen..He has the potential to be top 5 wingers in the league when he actually hustles, and under Torts, i think he would have that speed that he once had with Drury when they made a huge run at the cup a few years back

by LIrangersfan on Jul 3, 2009 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

No, not worth the chance. Sykora is a lot more reliable, especially on the PP. If you can’t get motivated by Lindy Ruff, I don’t know what will get you moving.

by Richter915 on Jul 3, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Afinigenovs stats while playing with Drury

  1. Pos Player GP G A P +/- PIM PP SH GW S S%
    61 R Maxim Afinogenov 77 22 51 73 6 84 11 0 3 241 9.1

put him on the 2nd line with drury and zherdev on his left, that will be a very unstoppable 2nd line. The only thing sykora did for the rangers was win in the shootouts, hes a good player no doubt about it, but im not quite sure if hes a fit for the rangers this season, as well as hes much older than afinigenov..id say give em a 2 year chance and see what he does, cause hes obviously flopping in buffalo these days

by LIrangersfan on Jul 3, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t mind seeing Maxim Afinogenov on our team, but honestly I don’t see it happening.

Rangers to sign Tyler Arnason

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Where'd you see that?

If its true, Arnason isnt bad but I dont think he’s a first line center, third line.

by Anthony J on Jul 3, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Not bad...

expect 40 pts outta him this season, skating on the third line with Avery

by Anthony J on Jul 3, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Or expect him in Hartford, considering he was 5-17-22 and a -16 last season.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 3, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

playing for colorado…he has broken 40 points in the past…with the right 3rd line i can see it happening

Sorry Guys

“Arny” became the Avalanche fans’ target of derision this year (along with Darcy Tucker). The entire team was horrible, but fans got really pissed off that he produced nothing and seemed to drag his linemates down on every shift he played. One of our favorite jokes was a “report” on MileHighHockey that he refused sex to avoid physical contact.

Also being a Rangers fan, I’m not happy with this signing, but at least it’s a 2-way contract.

by Pookie on Jul 3, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

my guess says he is this years Mark Bell

by Michael Gleich on Jul 3, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe Sather knows what he is doing. Avs fans were so pissed off at Arny that it deflected criticism away from the bad jobs being done by the coaches and the GM. but then again, it just delayed people getting fired until after the season was over.

But I can’t imagine Tortorella putting up with Arny. Holy cow. By the way, the “Arny refusing sex” joke was posted on MHH by Jibblescribbits, who comments below with another funny one. Lol.

by Pookie on Jul 3, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

no offense but people defended sather last year when he was signing the voros’ and rismillers of the world too. at this point Arny is not an nhler and that is why it is a 2-way deal.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 3, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

i’m not sure i understand your comment. i was joking about sather knowing what he’s doing (at the expense of arnason). avs fans really trashed arny this year, and it was probably unfair, but most people thought arnason wouldn’t get signed by any nhl team after his performance this past season. i’m still not sure why sather would sign arnason, especially with torts as coach.

Rangers sign Corey Locke

Looks like for some depth in Hartford.

Nice

Locke is pretty good 79pts in 77 games last yr in the AHL and had two 100 pt seasons (151,118) in the OHL a few yrs back. Hartford is winning a championship this year.

So long Blair Betts

with the addition of Tyler Arnason and the fact that we are still pursuing Koivu, alas, Mr. Betts will not be returning to the NY Rangers…we will miss you Bettsy!!! you played your heart and soul out for us every night.

by Anthony J on Jul 3, 2009 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

my thoughts exactly. The way I see it, slats approached this free agency with sacrificing the PK for a monster PP.

by Richter915 on Jul 3, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Tyler Arnason for Betts is the worst NY trade since Manhattan for beads

lol. If it were up to me, ANY trade for Betts is a bad trade.

by Richter915 on Jul 3, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Ales Kotalik anyone?

How do you guys feel about Kotalik? He would help the PP as he has a cannon shot, put him in the slot and feed him. He’s not a bad option at 2.2mil for two yrs perhaps

by Anthony J on Jul 3, 2009 12:05 PM EDT reply actions

the poor man’s zherdev really. He can be flakey at times and does hit slumps. I think we can do better with the money.

by Richter915 on Jul 3, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I lived with many a Sabre fan during school, and they hated Kotalik, almost as much as they hated Kalinin.

No more Buffalo scrubs please.

Trades

Do you guys believe Sather hasn’t yet signed our RFA’s because they are involved in trade talks?

by rmc235 on Jul 3, 2009 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

rmc if that was the case it would have to be a huge name player considering sather wouldnt deal dubi for heatley
