TSN Reports Blackhawks May have misfiled RFA paperwork Making Them UFA's Potentially.

A potential Holy Crap story for the blackhawks.

From TSN:
"Sources tell TSN the NHL and the NHLPA are investigating what might have been an enormous mistake by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago tendered qualifying offers to several key players this week, including Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer, however the investigation underway is to determiner whether the qualifying offers were filed correctly.

If not, there is the remote possibility the qualifying offers could be ruled invalid and the players listed above, conceivably, could be deemed unrestricted free agents because of the blunder.

There are few details, but one source says the players involved didn’t receive the necessary notification of the offers."

If this is true i would definitely try to sign Versteeg and Barker even if it means dumping Zherdev and Rozi (we all want him gone anyway). Versteeg is more consistent if somewhat less talented than Z, but a 23 year old with a somewhat similar game to cally would be a great pickup for this team and adding Barker who gives us another young 23 year old big d-man who is experienced and would only further allow us to deal one of our d-prospects for a forward prospect.

Staal-Girardi
Redden-Gilroy
Barker-d-prospect

That is a solid crew and in a year will be even better when MDZ should be ready, maybe McDonagh and hopefully redden gone.

well it only counts if they actually get away i guess…but they can certainly demand more money now i suppose.

Being RFA’s, you would think even if they all were deemed unrestricted, they would have no problem signing with the blackhawks? Even if bigger offers were made by other teams… especially with all the UFA"s taking less money to be with their respective teams this week…

by rmc235 on Jul 3, 2009 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i could see that to some extent but then you take a team like the kings who went hard after all these scorers and got stoned you dont think they would slightly overpay to get a versteeg?

not to mention chicago might not have a whole lot of choice if these guys get offers over where they wanted to pay them since Kane and Toews get big paydays next year.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 3, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Out of the bunch I really only see Versteeg and Barker get serious looks by other teams. But with the team Chicago has this year, and what they potentially look like in the future, I certainly wouldn’t want to leave if I were them. Then again, some players are all about the $$$.

by rmc235 on Jul 3, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed, which is why i mentioned those two and i dont see chicago winning with huet in goal, but we shall see.

you mentioned all these ufa’s who took less money to go back to their current team…care to name one considering every big name switched teams except the sedins and i dont think they really took less money. Chris neil giving up 200K doesnt really count to me either, but maybe that is the reference point.

With other offers...

Here are a few UFA’s who have signed with their current teams: Sullivan, Recchi, LaRose, Cole, Fedotenko, Neil, Clowe. (as i believe) All have recieved offers from others, and have chosen to remain with their clubs. Think I got them right… I guess me saying “all taking less money” was too big a statement, seeing that most offers were either the same as current teams’ or slightly less/more. Nonetheless, I do believe the amount of UFA’s signing with their own clubs this year is impressive.

by rmc235 on Jul 4, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Clowe, Larose were both RFA’s…sullivan is coming off an injury riddled year. recchi is as old as my father. Neil as i said was 200K no big sacrifice. cole and fedetenko may or may not have taken less but those are the best spots for them.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 4, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

yea. fedetenko had to “ok” a pay cut, same with recchi. You’re right about clowe, my bad, but Larose was a ufa.

If Frolov isn’t going the other way to Colorado.

la didnt have to give up any salary to fit smyth in so maybe they didnt give up much of value.

Just checked and dreger says
Kyle Quincey who played well for them last year
Tom Priessing and a 5th round pick

So they just traded 2 d-men…Quincey played 72 games, Priessing only 22.

Maybe this was just to make room for Scuderi or maybe they need another D. cant hurt to make the call. I would even do Frolov and O’Donnell (cheap steady 1 yr D-man to be a 7th to protect a kid) for Rozi and Z. we save a little over 4 mil on the cap this year. I would look to use some of that to bring in one of those 2 blackhawks (Versteeg or Barker) as they can be long term players for us.

Blockbuster

Smyth, although at 33, is still a force to be reckoned with. Quincey and Priessing are Quality defensemen that will really help bolster the Avs’ blueline.

The only thing I see wrong (in this proposed trade) in trading Rozsival for Frolov is the salary the Kings took by acquiring Smyth. Do you think the Kings would be willing to take a monster salary in Rozsival, right after this trade?

by rmc235 on Jul 4, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

that is why even though i would be adding more salary at least they have offensive upside in a Zherdev who now suddenly because gabby is here most people think he will decide to play every night and live up to his potential.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 4, 2009 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

smyth, kopitar, brown will be a phenomal line for the kings…btw.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 4, 2009 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

haha, that doesn’t leave much offense in their other three lines now does it? (assuming Frolov moves)

by rmc235 on Jul 4, 2009 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

oh, and i love how you said “but then you take a team like the kings..” above, and look at this story now… really doubt Frolov will be made available, but anything can happen.

by rmc235 on Jul 4, 2009 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

answer both at once. i gave them zherdev so there is offense there. and i knew the kings were going to go after offense somehow after failing with all the free agents now i wouldnt have guessed on smyth. to me this just means that colorado is saving money and rebuilding.

Please take redden insted of Roszival for Frolov?

by BNY999 on Jul 4, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

dont we all wish, but no one will take redden right now

by Michael Gleich on Jul 4, 2009 2:24 AM EDT up reply actions

thanks dont think we realized that considering in this exact thread it was brought up last night, but thanks.

they could have traded all 6 and still wouldnt want redden thats how bad his deal is.
