NHL News: Joe Sakic to Retire
As per TSN: Joe Sakic, one of the classiest players to ever grace the NHL, is set to announce his retirement this Thursday.
The Burnaby, B.C. native would leave the game as one of the most decorated athletes to ever take to the ice. Sakic hoisted two Stanley Cups, participated in 13 NHL All-Star games, and was named tournament MVP for Canada's gold medal winning team in the 2002 Olympics.
Sakic played his entire career for the Quebec/Colorado franchise, and served as their captain since 1992, after being drafted 15th overall by the Nordiques in the 1987 NHL Entry draft.
I don't know about you but I was always a Joe Sakic fan. I followed the Avalanche through the playoffs during those dynasty years when the Rangers weren't in the playoffs. Sakic had this to say at the end of the season:
"This is what you've done you're whole life. Since I was six years old I've played hockey," Sakic explained at the end of the regular season. "I think when you get to that point, you have to decide first and foremost if you can do it at the level you want to play at, and secondly if you're willing to do what it takes off the ice to get that accomplished."
With the 2010 Olympics taking place in his Vancouver, some believed the veteran would lace up his skates for one more year in order to respresnt his country at the international level in his hometown.
"Obviously there are not too many people who get a chance to play in the Olympics in their hometown," he said. "That would be something special, but going into the summer you have to be realistic with yourself and health-wise and motivation-wise you have to be willing to do what it takes."
In 1,378 games, Sakic posted 625 goals and 1,016 assists for a total of 1,641 points, leaving him eighth on the NHL's all-time point leaders list.
So go ahead tell us about your memories of Joe Sakic.

What some of you may be too young to remember, or may have forgotten, is that in 1997, Joe Sakic was very close to becoming a Ranger. Neil Smith made him an offer intended to blow Colorado out of the water. It looked like the Rangers were going to land Sakic, but the Avs got a cash infusion from new investors and a new arena deal, and were able to match the offer sheet.
Sakic was going to replace Mark Messier, who had just bolted for Vancouver.

that moment is one of the great “what ifs” for NYR fans. Its hard to predict, because that move was preceded by, and followed by, a ton of other bad signings (both by Neil Smith and his successor The Generalissimo)…but I find it hard to believe the Rangers would have missed 7 straight playoffs with Joe Sakic as its # 1 center.

I do remember the Sakic situation, though I was too young to understand the actual details surrounding it. Nevertheless, Joe was a great player and ultimate captain – its definitely sad to see a lot of the heroes I grew up watching retire (ie. Mario, Messier, Sakic, Jagr, Yzerman, Leetch, MacInnis, etc.).
By the way, the best quote in that NY Times article regarding Sakic’s offer sheet from the Rangers has to be this:
[Pierre Lacroix, general manager of the Avalanche, said the Sakic affair is a sign of a new era of bidding for the restricted free agents.
‘’The dance is open,’’ Lacroix said. ‘’The Rangers were very active on the free-agent galaxy. The way they are going, the way they are acting, I’m sure they are going to be the first team to sign an alien and to have an alien to play for their team. I just hope the planet of the alien will have a chance to match.’’]
"Never surrender opportunity for security."

pop, agree wholeheartedly, this franchise would have a much different recent history had the Avs not matched that offer

Had nothing to do with Joe Sac, if the Avs don’t match the offer sheet, Sakic’s a Ranger

Dang
I thought he really wanted to play for team Canada in the Olympics.
Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

what would the Rangers have had to give up to get him when they signed to that offer sheet

5 first round picks would have been the compensation
So the Rangers would have missed out on:
1998: Manny Malhotra
1999: two first rounders that year, so they would have lost either Pavl Brendl or Jamie Lundmark
2000: no pick
2001: Dan Blackburn
2002: none
So yeah, 5 first round picks, big deal

Don’t remind me of our 1st Round picks. =P
I must say, I followed hockey but not the rumor scene. Too young. Personally, I never knew this. Is interesting to ponder though…
"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"

Sakic
Was one of the smoothest skaters I’ve seen. Had great vision and could finish. Classy guy. I’m sure we’ll see him behind the bench or in a front office role someday, probably with the Avs.
