Rangers News: Rangers in Talks with Derek Morris
This from Steve Zippay over at Newsday:
"We're being patient," Morris' agent, Brad Devine, told TFP. "We have a few situations that we're interested in, but we're not in a hurry."
Morris split the 2008-09 campaign between the Phoenix Coyotes and New York Rangers. He was dealt to the Blueshirts at the trade deadline for Dmitri Kalinin, Petr Prucha and Nigel Dawes.
Devine acknowledged that the Rangers have expressed an interest in re-signing his client. "Yes, they have. Glen and I have had a couple talks," he said. "They're definitely in the loop."
Morris is looking for an environment he's comfortable with, as Devine indicated that the length of his next contract isn't a deciding factor."Term doesn't really bother Derek," Devine explained. "Term seems to be an issue out there, but one-year is fine with him... two years, three years, four years; he's flexible."
I bolded the key part for you there.
I would say no to Morris, give the kids a shot. I was not his biggest fan but he wouldn't be the worst thing in the wold.
You're thoughts?

This does not excite me at all. I thought Morris was overpaid last year, and he did nothing to change my mind.

Him over Mara? Out of the two, it must be contract length. Mara does not want a lot of money and still seems to be interested in getting better. Plus, we all know how much heart he has. Sigh…
"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"
Id rather have Mara
but if Morris accepts 1 year for 2 mill, Id be down. ITs better than signing an artifact like Zubov (and causing nightmares about the day the Rangers let him go.)
I think Mara is on his way out
It seems like the Rangers are not interested in him, Tortorella wasn’t his biggest fan.

Boo
I thought Morris was terrible. Sure he’s faster and quicker than Mara, but he makes a lot of mistakes and puts up very weak offensive numbers despite his talents. Plus god forbid the Rangers should ever take silly old things like heart and leadership into the equation.
Wouldn't sign him until other options are explored
I was not happy with Morris and would only sign him to a short term, reduced $ deal, but I would prefer Mara regardless. I guess the deciding factor would be, “who would fill the role if not Morris or Mara?” Zubov is a different kind of D-man. If a suitable replacement can’t be found in free agency then I think we’re forced to re-sign him. Hopefully a kid from Hartford is ready to follow Staal’s footsteps.
Oh, and get rid of Rosey!
Word is that Heikkinen
is making a HUGE splash in camo and might make the team, so maybe they have no need for Morris. But fromt he poll most of you would keep him if the money was right.

I laughed, and I agree, LOL
Morris was none of the things he was advertised as when the Rangers acquired him

What scares me about Morris
is that he asks for something like 3 mil or 3.5 mil a year and our cap space gets eaten up by a mediocre defenseman. ANOTHER mediocre defenseman, that is.

I think I was the only one that hated that trade when it was made.

i’d like him back for price, but it wont happen. he’s a good defenseman, makes a consistent outlet pass, good in his own end and is the only Rangers defenseman whose not afraid to shoot from the point and can actually get the puck on net. he wasn’t bad for the Rangers.
as for Heikkinen, lets see how he does in regular camp. I’m not impressed when a 24 year old schools 18-20 year olds.

Good in his own end? He’s a career -24, including -10 last year.

No way
Think about it, why would they do that when they can let a couple of their young d-men have a go at it to start the year? Then, if they’re not satisfied by the trade deadline, acquire a veteran d-man who doesn’t have a huge salary and is dependable, for a mid round pick.
Like Morris?
Only problem with your plan is that it could cost us 3 players and a pick, not “just a mid round pick,” as was the case with Morris.
Save the potential trouble and ink him for 1.5-2m 1 year and you have a little depth on the blue line in case one of the kids don’t work out. We need 7 d. Staal-Girardi, Redden-Rosi, 2 kids, and Morris sounds cool to me. Adding a 3rd kid is a little riskier and prevents one from trading rosi (or banishing redden). He’s much fleeter afoot than Mara and makes the outlet pass nicely. But its not really mara or morris, its any ufa d-man out there.

Yea, because I’m sure Morris accepts a 1 year, $2 million deal.

Exactly
He’s not going to sign a one year deal, at least I don’t think he would. I suppose if he really liked playing in NY, he’d sign for a single year, but it would be rare.

No?
Then let him go. I trust your cap analysis above my own, but after the frenzy and with all of the RFA’s out there, how much UFA $$$ is left to be split up among the various 2nd-4th tier players? A guy like Morris isn’t worth much more than 2m in my book. Neither is a Zubov at this point in his career. Or any of the other D options out there.

SIGN HIM !
OK Now look guys with Mara not an option and being stuck with the r&r dmen ugh, we have Staal and Girardi who are good, tight cap space, good prpspects (not ready yet), and limited talent on the market. If we started the season with 2good dmen,2 mediocre dmen {red ros} and 2 rooks were in trouble. Give this guy max dollars ….lol jking, no slats please dont, but 2 Yrs at 4 mill is worth it.
