Rangers Video: Evgeny Grachev Highlights
This video was just posted by battalionmedia on YouTube on June 26, 2009. You'll have the option for High Quality (HQ) once you start the video.
Battalionmedia provides this video discription -
Many people have been asking me for this.
So here is a best of Evgeny Grachev compilation for the 2008-2009 OHL season.
In this season Grachev set a new Battalion club record for most points in a season by a rookie, beating the old club record set by Jason Spezza back in the 1998-99 season.
Grachev also took home OHL Rookie of the Year Honours.
The video starts with Grachev's first OHL goal and ends with his final OHL goal which clinched the Battalion the Eastern Conference Title.
Enjoy him Rangers fans!
Personally I appreciate this video because I haven't ever seen him play. All I knew was that he is a top prospect that had an outstanding OHL rookie season this past year (40g-40a-80pts in 60 games). Come to find out, Grachev broke two previous Brampton Battalion records - Raffi Torres previous record of 35 goals, and, as quoted earlier, Jason Spezza's previous record of 71 points. He finished Fifth in the OHL for goals scored and 13th in points. Grachev went on to score 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 19 playoff games. He wrapped it all up by taking the OHL Rookie of the Year award as stated earlier.
How does he feel about this? He humbled himself by saying he started the season at 18 years old where most players are 16 or 17. Despite this, he performed very well, and even seemingly had a slow start that he was coached out of by Brampton's head coach Stan Butler. Grachev was able to proudly say his English very much improved after having no Russians on the team for him to communicate with. He even typed a few blog entries to fans in English here.
Rangers fans on YouTube are already speculating on his hockey career. Will his NHL debut possibly come next year - the 2009-2010 season? Some fans speculate that maybe a European line of Grachev - Anisimov - Zherdev would be "sick". Another hopes to see a 4th line of Grachev - Anisimov - Brashear. Some see some of Jagr in Grachev's goals. Other's see Malkin or Kovalchuk with his quick release. One user responded with, "In my opinion he doesn't shoot hard enough to be like Kovalchuk, or playmake like Malkin at all. He's more a speedster stick handling winger, who can break down a defense and get pucks deep. Think Bure or Fedorov."
One thing is certain - this 19 year old is fun to watch and definately provides us with a good hope for our future.

Im all for him on the big squad.
I don’t know where he fits, cuz Id assume Brian Boyle and Brashear are the 4th line guys,
But Id love to start to see him and Animisov on the same line at some point this season.
Definitely. Going to be exciting seeing where he fits, or how he does in the other leagues. Matt Duchene was a linemate of Grachev, and he of course led on to the 3rd round pick at the draft this year, so I think Grachev definitely has it somewhere inside of him.

Thanks for putting this up CD, this kid can’t get to B-way soon enough for me

Wow, this guy is the truth. I’ve only watched a minute and half of it and all I could think about was “Evgeni Malkin” … I think he could be just like him!
Just Imagine
Somehow, I can hear an announcer say something like, “Everyone knows about Evgeni Malkin, Well the Rangers have an Evgeni of their own, and boy is he good too.”
As I said on the show tonight it is starting to sound like Grachev is going to be given every opportunity to make the bigs this season, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Rangers throw a little caution to the wind and letting that happen if they think he is ready for the speed of the NHL

Thanks Jim! Almost fainted when I saw this on the front.
Also found out this stat on him that another story retrieved from Sportsnet.ca – He registered 21 multi-point games with six game-winning goals.

He needs 1 more year in Juniors
He is not and certainly should not come here to play on the 4th line which we all know Torts never plays. If that is where he is going to be then leave him in Juniors where he can play on the number 1 line with Matt Duchene for another year.
A 3rd line with Avery and AA would be a good fit for him but fans in NY as always are unrealistic as to what to expect from this kid. He will produce but comparing him to Malkin is not realistic or fair at this stage. Malkin is the 2nd best player in the world behind Ovy and in a 1st year if Grachev comes he should net 20 goals and 25 assists but with all the hype people will put on him they will call that a disappointment.
If he comes in a year instead then look for 30 goals and 30-35 assists as a rookie. Do what they did with Staal and let him have another year. He has played NA hockey for 1 year and with all the progress he made let him continue to learn it.
True. But Stamkos wasn’t really NHL ready but had a hell of a second half considering. Hard to say.
I wouldn’t be disappointed if he didn’t crack the team next year. At least we’ll know he’s getting better either way.

exactly
he struggled for half the year after dominating in an even more impressive fashion than Grachev did for Brampton. Stan Butler is one of the best coaches in the OHL at developing players, so let him do it.
Besides by waiting a year not only will he be more ready individually player like Artem will be more ready because he will have already gone through his bumps and bruises in the adjustment to the NHL.

I say bring him up
We can’t expect a 40-40-80 season from him, but all the d-men in those highlights were small and not very physical. He needs to log some ice time against bigger, more physical players so he can learn to adapt his game to playing in the NHL.

if they bring him
then he should play with dubi and cally
play higgins and drury with gaborik
let avery protect artem and figure out this wing whether it be Z or someone else.

Relax
i agree that he should NOT be brought up too quickly.
1- He is only 19. Not too many guys can play in the NHL at a high enough level at that age.
2- I like that he is a realist. the comment how he is 18 and everyone else is 16-17 shows he knows where he stands. He shows that he is smart, he isnt arrogant like some other players might be by smashing records.
I personally would like to see him play in the NHL and score like Pavel Bure, but lets get real. A season in Hartford is probably the best for his development. Like some of you have said, the defense was PRETTY WEAK in those videos. The thing I noticed in those videos was that he wasnt dancing around everyone in those clips. It was his shot that did the talking. Now some say its not hard like this guy or that guy, It doesnt have to be. He is showing he knows how to bury the puck and where to be. Quick release and accuracy is how he is getting it done. That should translate at the NHL level, now he just need experience doing it against bigger faster better opponents.
the rangers would be wasting his time on the 4th line. Hell, theyre already wasting their time with Brashear. lets not get started on that. (he is there to protect gaborik? ok, i cant wait till he pulls a blair betts again, or should i say dale hunter?)
Good points. Just in case anyone wanted to see his actual quote.
"I was older than a lot of the other rookies so I should have been better," said Grachev, who led all OHL first-year players in goals, assists, and points. "I was 18 when the season started and some of the others were 16 or 17 years-old. But it wasn’t a bad year for me."
One thing is for sure – he should get out of the OHL likely at this point. AHL or NHL now.

I love how the OHL is now like crap to people here yet it was good enough to prepare Staal for the NHL...hmmm

And good enough for Tavares, who is the same age

agreed
not to mention how many players put up huge numbers against the “phenomal” ahl competition but are career minor leaguers who cant break the nhl, so lets not act like it will be that competition that truly prepares him.

Why can't he be on the 4th line?
Id love to see Animisov, Grachev and ….Sean Avery on the 3rd line.
Calllahan, Duber, Gaborik on line one
Korpikowski, Drury, Higgins line 2
Line 4 probably Byerns, Boyle, Brashear on the 4th, maybe sub Voros in for Byers if he is retained.
Not exactly the greatest group, but I don’t think its worse than last season. Even if Rosival and Redden aren’t good, the defense as a whole with the King back there is still very good.
...I meant 3rd line dammit...
I can’t really see them not bettering last seasons stats, its not all that hard cuz they stunk on offense.
Gaborik alone makes them very dangerous.
Send him to Hartford
He’s not ready for the NHL, but I think it’s pretty obvious he has nothing left to prove in the OHL against a bunch of teenagers. The AHL is much more physical, and features a broader array of young guys and veterans trying to make it back to the bigs. If he does well in Hartford, he’ll be first in line for a midseason call up.
