Rangers News: Rangers Sign Ales Kotalik
Rangers today signed 30 year old winger Ales Kotalik. No detail were released to this point about the length and salary of this deal.
Kotalik who most of us know well from his time in Buffalo is probably a 20 goal 40 point scorer at this point as that is what he put up last year between Buffalo and Edmonton.
Personally i think this means that the rangers are intending to deal or let Zherdev walk and also probably give Grachev another year to develop before bringing him up. As i have said repeatedly i would love to deal for a player like Frolov to take the 1st line winger spot and have Kotalik fill the 3rd line RW. Hopefully this is a short term 1 year type deal for maybe 2 million. anything longer term or for more money would be a mistake and only hamper the future development of our young players.
UPDATE: ACCORDING TO ESPN ITS A $9M DEAL

Drury
I think this is all to help out Drury and make him more of a point producer. They were very successful together on the Buffalo power play if memory serves correct.
I believe you are right, and anything that helps Drury is good. I like this move. I still think there is a trade in the works, we’ll see

Kotaliks contract is 3 year 3 million dollar contract. Kotalik for a million a season is hella worth it
if those are the terms then i can deal with the 3 years if it is just 1 mil a year.

that would make
the two deals that sather did the last 24 hrs excellent and cheap…hell is freezing over.

Though in terms of Slats overpaying for players over a long-term deal, this isn’t too bad. Slats should look around the league – Koivu got $3.25mil for one year. Kotalik is not in the same ballpark.
i would definitely take koivu for 1 year 3.25 vs kotalik for 3 at 3 per

No way
Kotalik has a better shot and will help the power play, good move by Slats

yes, but at least for a few minutes, wasn’t it fun pretending we didn’t have the worst GM in the league?
no cause it makes the reality even worse.

kind of like when tsn initially reported gaborik as 5 for 5.75 not 7.5

The New York Rangers signed forward Ales Kotalik to a three-year, $3 million contract on Thursday.
The 30-year old split last season between the Buffalo Sabres and the Edmonton Oilers, putting up 20 goals and 23 assists.
In the 2005-06 with the Sabres, Kotalik had his best season in the NHL, scoring 25 goals and adding 37 assists.
The 6’1, 227-pound native of the Czech Republic was selected 164th overall by Buffalo in the sixth round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
if he is here at 3 million per then it is a dumb move…speaking we could have Zherdev who is all around better for a million more per year
as frustrating as Z is to watch he is easily worth 1 mil more than kotalik

Face it
Torts doesnt like and doesnt want Zherdev. Apparently it’s not even worth the trouble to trade him. Good riddance I say.
that's fine
still doesnt make 3 mil for kotalik any better.
as i said in the initial post 1 yr 2 mil was fine hell even the 3 mil for 1 year i might be able to stomach but 3 years is ridiculous

Sick of sather
I dont HATE this move, but i certainly do not like it. Kotalik or callahan. Who would you rather see log second line minutes.
Im just so frustrated with the management of this team. Its always WIN NOW and their have their blinders on for the future.
How about looking to next years Golden Free agent to be Ilya Kovalchuck. Lets save some money and try to sign him, he is a bonifide sniper and superstar.
Sather just keeps dumping money at every piece of trash in the free agent market year after year.
Sadly, i would love to watch them build from within, but the team is notorious for drafting crappy players, eh hem, hugh jessiman.
WHEN THE HELL DO I GET TO SEE THE GOD DAMN SAILBOAT?!
Nice Kevin Smith reference
It’s a good signing. Would you rather have Kotalik at 3per for 3 years or Zherdev. They both put up about the same point total Kotalik is needed for the PP and he’ll produce more than Zherdev. He’ll be worth it.
Yeah ... I agree
nice mallrats reference …. but it’s a schooner. I agree with you, it seems like every NY team does the same thing and overpay players that are past their prime or don’t have the patience to let their youngin develop and trade them away. I see the point in signing Kotalik … he’s there for the powerplay and to help Drury out. I wouldn’t pay him 9 mill for 3 years though. Zherdev … I liked him a lot and I wish he would stay with the team, I feel like this will bite us back in the arse. Rumors are circulating that Edmonton might be looking into him.
I still don't understand why you keep mentioning Frolov?
Why not say lets trade for Jordan Staal, similar players in term of potential.
Steve Zipay did a good job covering some of his specialty stats over at Newsday. Everyone should check it out if they want to know some different things about him. In short, he’s decent on the PP and one of the league’s best in shootouts.

Great Signing
Am I the only one here who thinks this is a good signing at 3 mil a year? Kotalik has great chemistry with Drury, and I’m sure he’ll have good chemistry with his new teammates.
Kotalik has basically recorded 40 points in 3 straight seasons (38,43,43). In his career, he has only played a full 82 games once, and that season he recorded 62 points. That was in 05-06. Putting up 40 points a year, not playing a full 82 games is impressive in my book.
And why is 3 million a year a terrible deal? For the past 3 seasons he was making 2.5 million. It is basically giving him a $500,000 raise. I think he is worth it. For a comparison, Higgins had a cap hit of 1.7 million last season. We basically gave him a $500,000 raise as well- and if we sign him next year, I believe he’ll get more, possibly the same contract Kotalik has.
I’m having a hard time understanding why some of you think this is a bad deal. $3M for 3 seasons for a 20-something goal scorer still in his prime is pretty reasonable, if you compare it with some of the other contracts out there. His Buffalo deal was $2.5M last year, I can’t really see a problem with this.

This is what D.O. over at DBTB told me about Kotalik:
He plays a soft game for a big player. He is afraid to get in the corners and battle for a loose puck. He has pretty good offensive skills and an outstanding shot. If used properly he could be a power play specialist. He is one the best in the league at the shootout. Overall he is a disappointment but he does have some offensive skill. I thought he was overpaid at $2.5 million so $3 million seems like a huge mistake.
No night spent pantsless is a wasted night.
Opinions from Oiler fans
Here are opinions of Kotalik from my 2 Oiler fan friends.
“He’s more towards the vagina side, but he’s got an awesome release on his wrister and a great slapper too. He’s a guaranteed 20-25 goals which is why I wanted us to re-sign him, but yeah he can be lazy and he doesn’t use his size nearly enough.
He’s absolute money in the shootout though."
“He’s somewhat physical but he doesn’t go to the front of the net/corners as hard as he should. His game is more around the top of the circles looking to get a pass in the slot and take a wrister or load up his (terrific) one timer.”
He’ll be a big help on the power play as well

here is a quote from Rangers homepage article:
Kotalik has eclipsed the 20-goal mark four times in six seasons, including 21 goals in his first full season in 2002-03. He also holds the NHL record with 11 career game-deciding goals in the shootout (tied with Vyacheslav Kozlov), and has converted 20 of his 38 career shootout attempts (52.6%).
HELLO!
From what I hear
Kotalik is going to turn the puck over.. alot. I’ve talked to a bunch of sabre fans that I know and it’s all mixed reviews. Hard shot, outlifts everyone in the weight room, showcases occasional game-breaking talent, and then he’s one of the laziest skaters, he has long cold streaks, has a 230 lbs frame and hates playing the body, and he loves fashion and design… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIPTpJhf_Xw
Avery’s new offseason Vouge partner?
Callahan and Dubinski
Kotalik is nice to have, but is not as vital as guys that produce the same amount of points and work noticably harder in Cally and Dubz. Now if Sather doesn’t get the two hardest working players from last year he gets a “D” grade for the off season, Dubinski is a must to have for Gaborik to thrive because gomez was the only other player able to get the puck in the zone and Callahan gives this team the x factor we need to succeed in the season, he will score 30 goals this year, remember he scored 22 goals without playing any minutes on the power play and ….was vital with duby on the 2nd penalty kill unit ….1st in the league “ahem”.So if Sather doesnt give both of them a raise something in the 1.6 million a year prucha recieved 2 years ago then hes an idiot. They deserve it and will play better this year and be core players for years to come. Please Sather dont screw this up.
All the reports talk about how this means the end of Zherdev. First the NYR submitted Zherdev’s qualifying offer. Then Zherdev filed for arbitration.
(1) Can the NYR “back out” of the arbitration?
(2) If not, and it goes through, and the NYR “win” the arbitration, does it HAVE to sign Zherdev? Does that depend on whether Zherdev gets even $1 more than the NYR submitted to the arbitrator?

I thought once arbitration is done, both parties have like 2 days to agree on the settlement once again or decline.
Ah, here it is – the summary from Zipay on Newsday.
A player and team can continue to negotiate until the date of a hearing, scheduled between July 20 and Aug. 4. If there’s no agreement, the player and team each propose a salary for the upcoming season and argue their cases at a hearing. A third- party arbitrator weighs the arguments and sets the player’s salary. Within 48 hours, the team can decline the salary, and the player becomes an unrestricted free agent.
