Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

Opinion: Disgruntled

I do not know about the rest of Ranger Nation, but is anyone else out there ready for another disappointing season?

Its like waking up christmas morning and finding a beautifly wrapped gift under the tree and opening it up to find that it has been filled with dog crap.

This is how I feel about Glen Sathers Gifts to the ranger fans over the tenure of his stay.

We dont need to go down the list of past rangers disappointments, because there has been plenty.

This year we have Lost fan favorite Colton Orr and replaced him with a piece of garbage called Brashear. Why? Because they play the same game? WRONG. Orr was getting better while brashear is just a goon. Dont mistake my comments for me saying Orr is going to score 20 goals EVER, but he was a nice 4th line energy guy who could basically beat the hell out of anyone. He did stupid things too, he wasnt an angel. But he most certainly didnt cheap shot Mara one year and then dismantle Betts in the playoffs jsut last postseason. Its almost as if we got Bush out of Office and replaced him with public enemy #1 Osama Bin Laden. (ok ok maybe not THAT dramatic but you get my point).

This is all for a 4th line player. Now we move up the ladder. Glen trades GOMEZ! what he gets back in return is a decent 2nd line scorer and a highly touted prospect. WOW GLEN!!! you did something good. I liked gomez and i think he is such a better player than how he played on the rangers, but good riddance, i couldnt deal with a 60 point scorer at 7 million dollar cap hit.

So glen becomes liek a little boy in a candy shop with a $20 bill and spends it on a jawbreaker! THOSE BIG ONES. They look like a great investment and  cool in all those colors but in the end we eat it( or lick it) for about 20 minutes and say what the hell was i thinking getting this!? i could have gotten a bag of swedish fish and sour patch kids. or a combo of other things that would be SO MUCH BETTER. So basically Glen goes and gets GABORIK the jaw breaker. High Risk High Reward. We can talk about one vs the other but im sure youre sick of that. Gaborik costs more than Gomez and he might play 1/4 of the games he did which means he returns alot less production which = sucks.

The rangers let Sjostrom go. there goes part of the rangers strength. then penalty kill. when betts leaves too, then there goes 3/4 of the pk that was 2nd in the league. betts gomez and sjostrom.

The rangers get Kotalik. Many speculate he will replace Zherdev. WHAT?! AT 3 Mill?!

Glen sather is constantly overpaying for mediocre talent. i could only imagine what he thinks he is worth. if the avg GM makes 2 million a year. he would estimate himself at like 10. If youre still reading this i am amazed and thank you. Im pissed as hell, and sick of watching these overpaid underachievers flop year to year.

Please Add your own rants, id love to hear them. Please try not to be optimistic... Unless there really is something to be 100% optimistic about. Like maybe jon tavares got traded to the rangers for redden zherdev and rozy

To be brief...

You shouldn’t be this upset. Things don’t always go the way the fan wants but that’s what makes every season great and unique, because you never know what’s going to happen. Yea, you said try not to be optimistic, but in my opinion, you’re jumping to conclusions way to early. Sorry.

Wrong

Even if Gaborik does play only 1/4 the games that Gomez plays, which is a pretty ridiculous exaggeration, he’ll still probably outscore him in those games.

You’ll really have to get over the loss of Sjostrom, Betts, and Orr. They’re 4th liners. Sjostrom is all speed and desire, his skills are terrible. I’ll take a rookie with a smaller contract over him. Betts was awesome, but you dont know how he’ll be after that serious injury. Maybe he hasnt signed because he cant pass a team’s physical? And Orr, for all his might, would spend more time in the box than on the ice under Torts.

Kotalik is a great signing. Zherdev is a lazy bum and we dont need players like that on this team.

That could very well be true.

Half Right

Orr at 1 mill a year and skating better every year is a lot better than Brashear at 1.4 million a year, i cant understand Sather sometimes what is the difference between the 2 enforcers besides Orr comes cheaper, plays cleaner, skates a lil better and works harder than Donald. Ohh u did mention already we like Orr better as a player than Brashear.

Betts is a tough pill to swallow considering he is a gamer and plays his heart out taking pucks to the body, bodies to the body and penalty killing, but Callahan and Dubz can take over the pk duties.

Sjostrom is okay but not worth mentioning besides he kicked ass on shoot outs and pking.

If Gaborik and Drury stay healthy the season will turn out better than you think, oooo yea we have to still lock down Cally, Dubz and another D man. Lets see what Glen does to piss us off next ha.

This is a little Harsh

I’ll agree I’m mad about losing Betts and Sjostrom, because they were two of the best defensive forwards in the league. The played against the Crosby line, the Malkin line, and NJ’s first line and had some good success, as well as being two of the best PK forwards in the league, and they weren;t expensive players, so I would have kept them around.

As for Brashear, I hate him too. We all do.

I also liked Gomez, but he doesn’t have the skills to be a #1 forward in his own right. Its sad to say, but he had to go, so we could get a legitimate top forward to help us score. Higgins and a couple of prospects isn’t a bad deal from where I sit, because even though Higgins is a protypical second line player, tne Rangers had no real 2nd line last year. We had a 1st-ish line, two above average third lines, and one of the best 4th lines you’ll ever see, so to me, Higgins fills our needs.

Other than over paying Kotalik, this free agency period is not nearly as disastrous as I thought it would be, though I’m not thrilled with every move.

In all honesty, I’m not betting my life savings on NYR winning the President’s trophy this year, but I wouldn’t have thought I would at the end of last season anyway. This team can still make the playoffs, and once there, they just need to get hot for a month, and we could take the cup. You never know.

Alot of rangers fans are upset simply because it was Brashear. Orr wanted a long term deal and obviously Sather and/or Tortorella didn’t want to commit to him. If they replaced Orr with some other goon, it’d be pretty much a blah move, so no need to really get worked up over that. Sure he killed Betts, but Betts is gone too so it’s not like they’re being united on a line.

He hasn’t really thrown money around like a kid in a candy store. Yes, he signed Gaborik for a bunch of money but the guy is as lethal as anyone in the league when healthy. It’s high risk/reward certainly, but he’s a potential superstar, something the team sorely lacked w/o Jagr.

I don’t remember Gomez doing that much PK. I thought it was Betts/Sjostrom/Dubinsky/Callahan. Nevertheless, they have addressed, to some extent, the loss of Betts and Sjostrom. Higgins is a decent player on the PK, he is averaging about 2.5 SHG per season for his career. It certainly won’t be 1st/2nd in the league again, but a top 10 PK isn’t out of the question, assuming Sather doesn’t fuck up the Dubie/Callahan signings.

Zherdev wasn’t great down the stretch (19pts in 34 games) and abysmal in the playoffs (0pts in 7 games), and never seemed to work hard enough to succeed in Tort’s system. Nonetheless, if Zherdev would’ve signed for $3.25, they probably don’t make the Kotalik move. But Nik thinks he’s worth more, and the organization clearly disagreed. In total, you lose a little bit of even strength production, but gain on the PP (which was certainly needed) and do save a little cap room in the process, it’s not a bad signing.

They’re not an elite team as constructed. Few teams ever are. But there are still moves to be made, and some depth in the organization to help facilitate something mid-season if there are glaring weaknesses. It hasn’t been a perfect offseason, but I’m certainly happier seeing Sather at least trying to remake the roster rather than sitting on a team that was never going to be good enough to get out of the East.

One addendum

I would’ve much rathered them sign Tanguay than Kotalik to replace Zherdev. He’s slightly younger, more productive and a LW (so he could play with Gaborik). But he probably would’ve commanded as much money as Zherdev (if not more), so I can understand them not getting him.

Gomez did do alot on the PK

He was usually in the second PK unit with either Drury or Dubinsky. It wasn’t the biggest facet of his game though, and Sjostrom and Betts are much larger PK losses than Gomez

by AllHailTheKing30 on Jul 10, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I had to look it up after because I really don’t remember him getting alot of time. Probably because I didn’t get to watch as much reg. season hockey this year as I’d have liked. But in the playoffs Gomez saw practically no PK time, and I’d be curious to see the numbers broken down between Renney and Tortorella.

Based on the total 2008 ice time though, it looks like he was part of the 3rd unit/replacement for guys in the box. Drury played twice as much SH as Gomez.

So you have a PK of Dubinsky/Higgins/Callahan/Drury in some combination. Korpikoski had some time and will probably see an increased role. So the PK should still be fairly effective and among the better units in the league.

I for one still can’t get over the Nylander gone for Gomez/Drury thing. I didn’t care about a cup when I got to watch Straka – Nylander – Jagr make fools of every team.

Btw, your quote -

Win.

"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"
