Rangers play the waiting game on Zherdev
According to Larry Brooks in the NY Post, Nikolai Zherdev's arbitration ruling could come down tomorrow, but may be postponed until Monday.
Highlights:
It's now up to arbitrator Elliott Shiftman to establish Nikolai Zherdev's contract number for this coming season, following yesterday's salary arbitration hearing in Toronto.
Zherdev, who participated in the hearing by phone from Russia, is believed to be seeking $4.5 million off a 23-goal, 58-point season during which the winger tied the exiled Scott Gomez for the club lead in points and finished one behind the retired Markus Naslund for the club lead in goals.
The Rangers, represented by assistant general manager Cam Hope, are believed to be arguing for a contract no more expensive than the $3.25 million qualifying offer the team presented Zherdev late last month in order to retain his rights.

theres gotta be more to this story….i can’t see why there is so much hatred towards the leading scorer of our team last year…maybe zherdev and torts did have an argument or maybe there was a falling out between him and his teammates…does zherderv deserve blame for his efforts toward the season, yes but it doesn’t warrant this kind of treatment from the fans and organization.
What do you mean? I wouldn’t say there is “hatred” towards him, I just think fans are divided on whether or not to keep him. I think the Rangers would like to keep him if the price is right

Why does it seem necessary to hide the information of arbitration hearings? How long did it take for information from the Avery hearing to be released? Weren’t the details released before the actual ruling? I’m information starved on this matter.
"Jaromir Jagr.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
- Sam Rosen
The only reason...
it was released is because Avery and his agent told Larry Brooks about what had occurred inside the room. I am not totally sure why it is confidential but it is what it is i guess.
i would rather
pay 4 million to Z than 3 million to Kotalik to get hopefully 40 points, especially since Z would only require one and not 3 years.

antropov contributed more towards the end and in full year wouldve been our top scorer. with that said if zherdev gets more than him in arbitration say goodbye to z because he aint worth more than 3.5 of now.
I think that
Zherdev contributed well in the defensive zone.

If I was Zherdev..
I’d be pissed off too if I had to be in the same locker room as someone who makes 7.5 million and puts up as many points as me. I won’t bother talking about that guy in the corner of the room whose making 6.5 million.
you mean Drury right?

by Michael Gleich on Aug 1, 2009 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions
then its still wrong since gomer was 7.357
by Michael Gleich on Aug 1, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Ok then, so instead of just saying 7.5 I'll remember 7.357 for all the technical people who have to have everything correct down the the exact number
It’s really $7,357,142, I’m sure you were just too lazy to type it out like I was.
Zherdev
has a good chance of being awarded a favorable number. His scoring totals were right in between Gionta and Demitra, both of whom scored recent FA deals of $5.0 and $4.0 million respectively.

Nik's a keeper.
i understand the frustration some fans have in regards to his postseason performance. his FIRST postseason experience. but how did we get to the postseason?
Z started the season on the 3rd line with dubinsky and voros. that line clicked immediately. i don’t know if you recall, but there was a story about the three playing NHL 09 on PS3 and changing the lines so they can play together. Z was on fire. even voros was great OK on that line. Nik at 10-2-1 was “steal of the year”…then stuff started going downhill. lines changed. streaks ended. coaches got fired. players got frustrated. some of them are just kids. Zherdev is a kid. he’s 24. He managed to outplay vets like gomer and drury in points for the majority of the season. he had some clutch plays.
this kid’s got more talent (arguably) than anyone on our team right now, minus gabby. he’s not injury prone. he can skate. he can score. tape to tape, you name it. everytime he touches the puck, i’m wondering what the hell he’s gonna do with it…
what he needs is 2 more years and a good, solid line. i’d hate to see this raw talent ripen on the wrong team. bottom line…he wants 4.5 because he knows he’s not gonna get it, so aim high…3.75-4 mil is the correct price tag. that’s what he’s worth right now. in 2 years, he’ll be worth alot more…

While all that is probably true
They still don’t have the cap room for him as it currently stands.
by George E. Ays on Aug 1, 2009 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions
absolutely.
but they also don’t have 12 forwards and 6 blueliners with contracts, so things are bound to rock and roll before the season starts…

Well
The only holes are 6th D and 4th line RW, presuming Gilroy’s contract is an indicator he’s the front runner for 5th D. And the main options for those spots are already in the organization.
