Ranger News: USA tops Russia 8-1 at Junior Evaluation Camp
I know it says USA on the headline but this is Ranger news. Ryan Bourque had a goal and Derek Stepan had an assist for team USA. Word is that Kreider was a healthy scratch. Let me give you the Bourque highlight in the story written by USA Hockey:
Team USA gave itself a comfortable cushion with four goals in the second period. After Carlson connected on a power-play goal two minutes into the frame, Jeremy Morin(Auburn, N.Y.) slipped a breakaway shot low past Trifonov at 3:36 of the second, extending Team USA’s lead to 5-1. After Russia replaced Trifonov with goalie Dmitry Shikin, Ryan Bourque(Boxford, Mass.) and Kristo each connected to give Team USA a six-goal lead after two periods.
It would appear that Chris Kreider didn't get a point. Regardless it is good to see the Rangerskids working out. We have talked often about how scouts say Bourque would have been a first round pick if he was a few inches taller; so it is good to get a look at him finally. Also we have heard nothing but brilliant things about Stephan so it is good to see him too. This tournament will be a big litmus test to see how these kids will develop.
If you want to see the entire scoring summary here it is:
First Period - Scoring: 1, USA, Kristo (Stepan), 2:03; 2, RUS, Tarasenko (Kulemin), 2:17; 3, USA, Palmieri (Czarnik, McRae), 2:44; 4, USA, Budish (Carlson, Schroeder), 11:55 (ppg). Penalties: RUS, Burmistrov (roughing), 3:52; RUS, Guryanov (hooking), 10:10; RUS, Kostev (hooking), 11:10.
Second Period - Scoring: 5, USA, Carlson (McRae, Palmieri), 2:16 (ppg); 6, USA, Morin (unassisted), 3:36; 7, USA, Bourque (Moore), 10:11; 8, USA, Kristo (Fowler, Moore), 15:00 (ppg). Penalties: RUS, Nikontsev (diving), 1:46; USA, Morin (slashing), 7:25; USA, Morin (tripping), 7:25; RUS, Guryanov (tripping), 9:37; USA, Wideman (hooking), 11:01; RUS, Ostapchuk (hooking), 14:42; RUS, Selyanin (hooking), 17:31; USA, Comrie (hooking), 18:19.
Third Period - Scoring: 9, USA, Schroeder (Palmieri, Carlson), 18:02. Penalties: RUS, Burmistrov (slashing), 1:52; RUS, Selyanin (slashing), 7:12; RUS, Chudinov (roughing), 8:07; USA, Johnson (holding), 13:14; RUS, Selyanin (high-sticking), 16:31; RUS, Zaytsev (roughing), 19:59.
I think we will see great things from the Ranger prospects at this camp. I have very high hopes for Bourque and Stepan. The jury is still out on Kreider because he is so young and has yet to be challenged on anything higher than a prep-school level; this tournament will change that. Keep you're eyes on him because he can be a game changer.

kreider...
Whenever i read anything about ranger prospect news, it always says that kreider either didnt score a point, was on the losing side of an 8-0 loss in a scrimage, or get mauled by another player. The only other constant is how ryan bourque runs circles around him and is productive. The kid did not even look that fast in the ranger’s training camp video, nice first round pick.
Jeez, slow down the judgment train
The kid hasnt even played a professional game yet. He’s 18 and just got out of prep school. Naturally he’s going to be further behind than these other guys who have played college hockey or major-junior.
But the fact is that he still made the cut. Obviously he must be good to be there. Dont pass judgment on a kid when you’ve only seen him skate for 20 seconds on a camcorder.
agreed
he is VERY VERY young, give him a chance before we write him off please

REALLY???
Settle down KBrian, the kid is in 11th Grade! He’s not playing with a bunch of all-stars from the High School Hockey Association, he’s playing with The BEST kids in AMERICA U-20! I dont remember seeing ONE article saying he’s been getting MAULED or that Ryan Bourque is skating circles around him…..STOP READING HOCKEYBUZZ POSTS!!!!!

uh hockey buzz?
and hey im just sayin, because bourque is gettin it done, and i was under the assumption they were the same age, and the kids going to boston college next year genious. however most of that was just a rant because i still wish we got zack kassian instead. im not enjoying ur particular flavor of hatorade.
Give him time. The prevailing thought surrounding Kreider at the draft, although not shared by the Rangers, is that Kreider is a “4 year kid”, meaning it might be 4 years before you see him as a Ranger.
Ethan Werek, the Rangers second round pick, was projected in many places to be a first round pick, so in terms of value the Rangers made out great there.
As for Ryan Bourque, as I’ve said before, 2 inches taller he is a first rounder as well. Bourque has been programmed to be an NHL-er all his life.
It will be years before we know how good or bad this draft was, don’t get too wrapped up in a Juniors Tournament

No Doubt
The Rangers had an excellent Draft in 09. One of their best draft classes of recent memory for that matter. They’ve also been able to land other teams Top picks in return for Trades ( Fahey for Williams, Gomez for McDonagh ). McDonagh is going to be the REAL DONE. Just be patient, we’re not winning the Cup this year or next. When ALL of these KIDS are up, we will Contend!
Grachev, Kreider, Stepan, Bourque, McDonagh, Williams, Werek, etc…Its exciting to see real progress in regards to youth movement, instead of just hearing it being suggested. By the way, for those that dont know it or dont realize it, Sather has NOTHING to do with Scouting ( his daughter does tho ) But he has aquired some decent prospects.

I saw on SNYRangersBlog
That Kreider may have actually been scratched for this game, which would explain why he didnt do anything.
