Erratic August Thoughts

Note: I was attempting to put together a coherent article focused around one or two topics, but it's too nice out and all I am focused on at the moment is the USA Soccer World Cup Qualifier in Mexico tomorrow (4 PM EST). So instead I will pull somewhat of a Jim and just write my thoughts down; rangers related or not.

Ø  In my first visit to HFBoards.com in over a month, I see the most recent topic is the THN article saying the Rangers will finish 13th in the East this season (a little premature for predictions, no?). Their reasoning:

"Why: This is a max-spending team with just one skater worthy of max money - and Marian Gaborik can't stay healthy. The Rangers' best player is their goalie, a good thing, but their No. 1 center is Brandon Dubinsky and the suspect defense is expensive, two bad things. The Rangers are a rebuilding team, but refuse to admit it."

That's one opinion, I guess. But it did confirm a topic I have been thinking about a lot lately, and that is how balanced this team could be. But how can balanced be bad? Well, let's just remember last February and March, where no one on the Rangers seemed like they could step it up and carry the team, besides that Vezina-caliber goaltender we stumbled upon years ago. It is one thing I am worried about early on in the season, because if things don't click relatively quickly we could possibly see a Ranger fan backlash at some of the decisions this offseason, including the coaching decision from last season.

Also, Dubinsky is not our number one center, THN and others. The captain, Chris Drury, is. I love how everyone is writing Drury off this season, and I really hope that he has a big year like I think he will. Dubinsky may end up playing on the "first" line, but that does not mean he is our number one center, that is two different things. A number one center is the player who gets thrown out with one minute left to win an important faceoff in either zone. Dubinsky will get a shot at that a handful of times this season, but most of the time you will see number 23 skating out from the Ranger bench in those situations. Drury still has excellent vision and a wrist shot to match, and I am expecting a comeback year for our Captain.

Ø  If Zherdev ends up going to the KHL (RDS reporting as I type that he has signed with Salavat Yulayev Ufa), I will laugh. I think it makes the Rangers look smart, and at the same time it really says something about his character that no other NHL team truly wanted him. Talent can only take you so far; you have to have the character to match to really be great in anything.

Ø  Glad to see my Red Sox bounce back last night. As for the weekend, I am glad I didn't watch most of the games, to say the least.

Ø  And to finish up I will talk some footie. I just really became a big soccer guy this summer, and for the most part I mainly support the US team and the Red Bulls of MLS. The US, as I mentioned above, have a great shot to end their winless streak in Mexico Wednesday, and if it happens it will have to be a repeat performance of the Confederations cup when they took down Spain and pushed Brazil pretty hard. If they can get out of the first fifteen minutes of each half, I like their chances to at least draw or sneak out a one goal win. I am going to say 2-1 US, Donovan and my boy Michael Bradley with the goals. For those of you wondering, the game is on MUN2, as ESPN doesn't have the rights to the game. If you have digital cable, MUN2 will be available all day on Wednesday for free, as US soccer fans really put pressure on NBC to make it so (I signed the petition). The Yanks are Comin' !

Wow.

13th?

This is roughly the same team except add some speed in Kotalik, Higgins and oh yea…Gaborik, few more kids in most likely Lisin and Gilroy, maybe Sanguinetti.

This team was merely OK last season and simply ran out of gas, in 7 GAMES!!! to the offensive onslaught that is the Capitals.

The Rangers need scoring and PP capability, with Gaborik Kotalik and possibly a sleeper in Gilroy who may just be an ideal PP QB, they may have gotten much better than last season.

And that “overpayed” defense was one of the best in the league last season. Redden can only play better (can’t he?), Rosival is Rosival, Staal will get better, ditto Girardi. Mara’s loss might hurt (maybe….)

But 13th? This team is too young and with guys like Dubi and Callahan poised to break out in Torts system, no way.

If Gaborik plays 65 games, this is a playoff team. I hope he plays in every game. If Gaborik is 100% or thereabout the whole season, the Rangers are one of the top 3 teams in the East.

Dont throw that "best defense" stuff out there

Everyone and his mother knows the only reason our “defense” was so good is Henrik. I came across some cool stats on behindthenet.com and I’m working on a fanpost, I’m just having trouble summarizing exactly what the stats are because the site doesnt give a very good description.

by Steeeve on Aug 12, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I gotta disagree with that… There is no way, in anyone’s imagination the NYR had the best defense. What they did have was excellent goaltending. Evidenced by the fact that Henrik faced the 3rd most shots in the entire league.

This team is going need Henrik more than ever if the playoffs are in the future. As the current Roster stands, this team will be at the top of the shots against list this season.

by NYdemo on Aug 12, 2009 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say that

I say they were one of the best, not #1. I know they aren’t the best, but with the King back there and the D-Men they have, they are one of the best.

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 12, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Anyway...

So… The real question is Torts tried to get his system rolling right off the bat last season and he had to modify it, because the D couldn’t handle it. Wondering whats thats going to look like when he gets it going right away. I have a feeling Hank is going to get a work out this season.

by fromthe51hate on Aug 12, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure which comment your directing your response to, but I agree with “overpaid” but not with “one of the best” and I think Steeeve feels the same. I think Joe is being way to complimentary by saying “we have the best defense” and this is what I disagreed with. GAA was 11th in the league and 3rd in the East, but that was due to goaltending not the spectacular play of the defensemen, and THAT is what Steeeve is pointing out.

I can’t give credit to our defenders for the excellence in our goaltending. In fact, I’d give the backchecking of our forwards more credit for our low GAA before I credit the defensive pairs. All that excluding Staal and Girardi of course.

by NYdemo on Aug 12, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, If everyone whos name ends with an ‘ik’ on our team stays healthy and this team finishes top 8 at least. 13Th ? thats odd, are they saying that atlanta, tampa bay, florida, montreal and isles finish ahead of us, really? hmm. Everyone is entitled to thier own opinion but doesn’t having a top 5 goalie and a top 10 scorer get you a little more love? guess not.

by louielounz1 on Aug 12, 2009 10:38 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Last time we were predicted to finish that low we made the playoffs. Oh, yea, add a 100 point season to that too.

What a joke of an THN article this one is turning out to be.

Again, ESPN is not the leader in sports

How can ESPN not have this game? I thought they had rights to every US Qualifying match and the WC?? I don’t mind watching the game in Spanish, its alot more entertaining. But ESPN really sh!t the bed with this one.

by DJ Wuss on Aug 12, 2009 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

ESPN is only the leader

in telling you what you should watch. When it comes to hockey and soccer, forget about it. They might as well not even exist.

E:60

did anyone notice in the most recent E:60 how the Pittsburgh Steelers fan who has cancer got superbowl tickets? Then did anyone notice they did a story about how he reacted to the Steelers winning the superbowl? During that show, he had a Penguins shirt on. (Briefly, like lightning quick, as if ESPN didn’t want to show it) and the Penguins won the cup this year. Where is the heartfelt story on his other favorite team winning their respective sport? Wouldn’t that give him optimism too?

I know that the story was about his passion for football, but this popped in my head when I was watching it.

i've actually been impressed

with ESPN’s soccer coverage over the past three years. They actually showed (up until today) all of the US Qualifiers, including the first round matchup with the Bahamas, when they score 8 goals in the first half. They do as much as they can with Champions League, and they showed every match of Euro08. But this is a travesty. Its arguably the biggest game the US the play until next summer, they haven’t won in Mexico EVER (0-22-1 or something) and a win will put them 7 points ahead of 4th place with 4 matches left with really only 1 difficult one of those 4 (at TNT). This is unacceptable. US Soccer should be raising hell about this.

by DJ Wuss on Aug 12, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, I wouldnt know

I havent watched ESPN since high school, save for Sunday/Monday Night Football and Sunday/Wednesday Night Baseball.

by Steeeve on Aug 12, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

ABSOLUTELY....

Hockey and Soccer get NO LOVE! Hell, even Tennis gets more on ESPN! The Friday Night Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final—-GAME 7 I say, got overlooked by NEWS 12 SPortscaster! ( by the way, News 12 is owned by Cablevision-owner of the NY Rangers ). In his closing statement, the CLOWN Sportscaster says “If you arent going to watch the Mets or Yankees game, make sure you tune in a watch ( I’m fixing a big smile on my face at this point, because now I feel Hockey is finally gonna get a plug and some love ) our special about the US Open which is set to begin next week!”

WHATTTTTTTT!!!! The friggin US Open? I mean I understand its ON Long Island! But geez, I mean your a Sportscaster, and you dont mention a GAME 7 which is about to decide a Sports Championship?

I’ve never gotten into soccer, and I doubt I ever will. To me its as boring as basketball. Rob, don’t all soccer games end 2-1?

i like soccer but its hard to get into it when all the best players are overseas. we have like the D+ league over here and u know beckham is only over here because of posh. if u want to start getting into soccer u have to start playing FIFA, thats how i semi got into soccer

No way Jim

soccer is like a moving chess game. Watch some primere league soccer (with my Arsenal Gunners gunning for the League) and you will see some awesome soccer that isn’t 2-1 or 1-0

You should play fifa 09...

I got into soccer when I bought Fifa world cup 06, and got to discover how strategical this game really is. Very interesting when you know what’s going on outside of the ball carrier.

by John Mjr on Aug 12, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

It is pretty boring to watch

I’ve played soccer for 17 years, and I absolutely LOVE the game, but I cannot sit down and watch a soccer game unless it’s the world cup. It’s so slow and boring, and it seems like all they ever do is just pass it around in circles. Obviously the WC is different because the intensity is like watching playoff hockey, but any other match is just painful to watch.

by Steeeve on Aug 12, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Its not so much about the game

Look, soccer has its ups and downs, but its very similar to hockey as well. The build up to a goal is amazing, and its not so much about the game as it is supporting a club in good or bad and having a ball while doing it.

Plus, controlling a soccer ball (at the World Cup level) is one of the hardest things to do in sports. I put it on the same level as hockey skating, hitting a major league pitcher, and being a scratch golfer.

Jozy Altidore Rules!

I am looking forward to an exciting season of Ranger Hockey! I expect a similar season to the last few. The Rangers will once again flirt with relegation (a soccer term – keeping with the theme here) and finish somewhere 5-8. It’s all good – we’re maintaining a young and up & coming core. Finally something is being built for the long haul and is taking shape. You can see it coming. Couldn’t say that about previous teams. Legitimate Cup contention is not that far away if we stick with the plan. Don’t get your expectations too high for 09-10. For this season a first round playoff victory would be a success – but the stakes go up from there.

Jozy will take US Soccer to the next level

You’re right on about the EPL. I love soccer but just can’t watch the MLS. Thank God for fox soccer channel. Americans will have trouble embracing this sport until: 1) We get our own legitimate league, or 2) the EPL gets rid of tie games. If there is one thing an American can’t understand it’s a tie! There has to be a winner and a loser. Look what we to ties in hockey.

Give MLS time

Remember, MLS was created to help develop players for the US National team. It has done such that, and the league is growing at a great rate now. Give it a couple of years and then we will see if the quality is better.

by Rob L on Aug 12, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree with you 100pct. as long as the ship keeps moving in the right direction. we have a few pieces of the puzzle but the core foundation is there, and if we have those pieces in the system right now and it takes a few years to develop into what we need then im willing to wait. as long as we are competitive and fun to watch in the meantime.

as the ol’ clique goes, if u have a top netminder then u always have a punchers chance at the cup

by Conway on Aug 12, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

plus we are a VERY young team

we will be good for years to come.

Also add in that soccer is becoming more popular in the USA so more kids will want to play it

I’m glad he charged the mound, but he shouldn’t have thrown the helmet. Plus, Youk got the bear hug on him and couldn’t throw that skinny kid down? CMON YOUK.

If I was a pitcher I wouldn’t want Youk running at me full speed, I think we can all agree on that.

what I wanna know is: how can you outweigh a guy by 50 lbs (at least), get a running start at a stationary target (sort of), and still wind up on the bottom? Youkilis would never make it in mma.

U.S soccer becoming a powerhouse while the general public doesn’t care is hilarious. I’d love to go up to some ManU fan and be like yo, our country can beat yours and we don’t even like this sport. That’s been a nice Yankee dream for me.

Ross McKeon

ranked the Rangers 12th OVERALL in his power rankings:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=ArozvE7h0fSCpgWKRWVTkwJ7vLYF?slug=rm-nhlpower081209&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
The explanation isn’t there, but it’s better than 13th in the division.

That description sucks

Why does he detail every other team’s acquisitions and losses, but the Rangers blurb is just “Chelios wants to play there.” I hate Yahoo sports writers.

when there is nothing to write about, you write anything you could to fill space. That is exactly what Ross McKeon does. I try to avoid his writings.

It's a shame

I like Yahoo sports because I find it very easy to read, and I like the layout. But the writers are absolutely atrocious. Between Charles Robinson, Ross McKeon, and Wyshinski, I can’t even bear to read their articles.

Bertuzzi

what about bertuzzi. cheap, good size to go against Pronger in Philly. can still put up 15-20 goals. net presence in front on the PP.

i would like to see him in NY for depth and possible 3 or 4th line scoring. help take some pressure off the kids too. would drop the gloves.

No way

If there is one player I don’t want to be in the Rangers uniform it is Bertuzzi. He is like Chris Simon in my books.
