In one word, no.

Honestly the NYI are still some ways off being a legit contender to get in the playoffs

The only thing I'm afraid of

Is the Lighthouse project not getting approved, and having our favorite punching bag move to KC.

Speaking of which, have there been any updates on the front?

LOL

I needed a good laugh today….

After their great run 1980-1983, the Islanders have tried their best to be involved in the same breath as the Jets and Mets (probably already are).

Doesn’t matter what they do, they are not doing squat this season.

tavares is worrysome to me as a cloudy day lol lol lol when the islanders do get good again tavares will be traded for nothing just like ziggy palffy and roberto luongo was , thats how ownership runs things on the island…

John Tavares

I am an Islander fan. Not really sure where the Isles will finish this year. It depends on a lot more than just Tavares. Will DP play and, if he does, how well? What will some other developing players do? Will the team stay healthy? All in all, Puckcentral is probably correct. Isles are likely a year away from contending.

As to the other comments, no, the Isles will not be moving to KC. Not now, not in 2015, not ever. And the isles will never trade Tavares.

One final thought. Regardless of where the Isles finish this year, Tavares will have more goals than Gaborik. My best guess for Gaborik: he’ll go down with an “injury” at some point, blame Torts, and try to get him fired.

isleman

Tavares 40 goals? What planet did you come from? The kid has alot to learn, your not in kansas anymore toto(not yet anyway) OHL vs NHL big world! cant wait to see pronger put him on his ass.good luck with that! LETS GO RANGERS

by Pauly D on Aug 15, 2009 12:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, he has a lot to learn and he has shown that he is a quick learner. Pronger needs to be careful or he will leave his team shorthanded. This is the new NHL.

Tavares is going to be very lucky if he scores 20.

Hes got Zero supporting caste, his play has declined each of the last 3-4 years, not big enough for the dirty goals he seems to score, and monster defense in our division(Pronger, and whoever else that is good lol.) Plus Goaltending is SOLID in our division(Lundqvist, Fluery, Emery, and Broduer) two Stanley Cup winners, one Stanley Cup participant and Hank who is flat out better than the other three. So yea Tarvares isnt doing anything this year.

by CrazyRangerFan on Aug 16, 2009 1:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The supporting cast you speak of scored almost as many goals as your heroes last season in spite of losing 10 times as many games to injuries. And most of them are developing players who are likely to be much better this year.

Tavares’ play has not declined at all. He has scored over a 100 points in each of the last three years. His totals were slightly less the past two years as opposed to three years ago. If you check, however, he also played in fewer games the past two seasons.

This is the new NHL. Size isn’t everything. He isn’t that much different in size from Sid. Ray Emery a solid goaltender? You ARE kidding, right? Brodeur’s game is declining. And, yes, Fleury had an impressive Finals but I am still not sold on him. Henryk is your best player, no argument. And when he is on his game, he is hard to beat. But we all know that he has his off days.

JT will have 25-30 goals minimum. Any more will depend on how the “supporting caste” does.

give me a break with Lundquist already

here we go again – “King” Henrik is better than every goaltender who has ever played and ever will play. I’m sorry, but you shouldn’t appoint your goalie with a nickname of “king” unless he actually wins something of consequence.

and no, the stupid olympics don’t count. Any goalie can get hot for 2 weeks – look at JG Giguere for anaheim during the playoffs a few years ago, or Ray Lelanc for the USA way back in the 90s (1992? 1996? i forget, because he had such a great NHL career after that…oh, wait…)

JT = Espo

One final thought before I go away. This is a Ranger blog after all. Two thoughts actually.

  1. This is the new NHL. There has been a move in this offseason among Eastern Conference teams to go for beefcake, to muscle up. SIze and strength still have their place, but if you rely too much on them, the teams with effective powerplays and good team discipline will kick your tail in. Many Isle fans have been panicking and begging Garth to go out and get some goons. Bad mistake. Instead, he should send a pick to Carolina for Anton Babchuk, who apparently no longer fits into their plans. If he can produce on a par with last year, the Isles will have two of the most effective PP QBs in the NHL. And that is how you answer the goon gambit in the New NHL.
  1. It has been said that JT is an Espo type. He seems to agree and has made Espo his model. He certainly seems to have talent worthy of comparison to Espo and, with some modest bulking up, will be Espo’s playing size.

Isles should place him on their second line between Hunts and maybe Matt Moulson or Jesse Joensuu. They could be his Hodge and Cashman. In his rookie season with the Blackhawks, Espo had 23 goals and 32 assists…and that was in an era when you could routinely plant someone on the ice…or worse….and get away with it. 55 points is my minimal expectation for JT this year.

I thought I made a mistake on the numbering…but your blog doesn’t seem to want me to go to a #2. It’s OK. I think the blog is clear enough.

HELL NO!

Taveras & Okposo will be the only line scoring for the Islanders and no one on that team is going to put more than what those two will. Still they have absolutly nothing. DiPietro has become a crappy goaltender, they have no defense to help stop the puck nor do they have any players to support those two when they play on the ice.

Joey MacDonald is gone, Martin Biron & Dwayne Roloson won’t get the saves they normally make from their previous teams they were on. Both of them will get lit up just like the Islanders got lit up last year.

by NYR #35 Richter on Aug 17, 2009 1:18 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And if the 2 goalies get lit up, GOOD. Why would the ISLES want to make a meaningless 8th seed playoff appearance, when a top 5 draft pick would help them a lot more. Look at Pittsburgh, look at Chicago – you build thru the draft, then add a few free agents to supplement your core. you don’t sign 2nd line players for 1st line player contracts, or oft-injured 1st line guys and expect to win.
