Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Will Del Zotto Make The Jump To Broadway?

With only four returning veteran defenseman on the roster, the Rangers have two vacant roster spots up for grabs on defense. One of those spots could fall into the hands of last year's first round pick Michael Del Zotto, who turned some heads with an impressive showing at training camp last September. At last year's camp though, Del Zotto knew he had little to no shot at making the club. He knew his fate was another season in the OHL, he wasn't under pressure to make the team. This year is an entirely different story. With the two spots on defense open, DZ will have every bit the opportunity as Matt Gilroy, Bobby Sanguinetti, Corey Potter, Michael Sauer, and Finnish import Ikka Heikenen (yes, yes the one whose last name sounds like that delicious beer) to make the big club. The pressure will be very real this time around.

When Del Zotto was traded along with teammate John Tavares (the second coming of Alexander Daigle - well lets hope so anyways) to the London Knights, he silenced some critics who questioned his conditioning and defensive ability. With the Knights, Del Zotto regularly logged 30 minutes of ice time along with eventual first round pick John Carlson. He also notched 6 goals and 24 points during 28 regular season games with his new team. Former NHLer and London Knights head coach Dale Hunter was impressed with Del Zotto's play.

"You know he's talented but until the trade, you didn't really know how good he was. You'd only see him two times a year and it's hard to get an impression. But he came here and it wasn't just the offence. He hit hard. He did a great job for us and I think he can help a team."

Del Zotto was also more than a point per game player during the Knights playoff run, tallying 19 points in 14 playoff games. Jess Rubenstein ofThe Prospect Park is a big proponent of a Rangers prospect dominating his current league (in this case the OHL) before moving up. Although Del Zotto didn't flat out dominate the OHL because of his pedestrian first half with the Oshawa Generals, he was excellent down the stretch run with the Knights. Rubenstein was on the money when he said that Del Zotto being traded to a playoff team was the best thing that could happen for his development.

In order for Del Zotto to make the Rangers, he's going to have to elevate his play to the point where it makes it impossible for the Rangers to return him to London. He will then have to erase any uncertainty about his ability to compete at the NHL level for a full season during his first 10 games. Since Del Zotto his only 19, he can't play in the AHL. He therefor has 10 games to stick in the NHL before he has to be returned to his OHL club.

The Rangers in the past few years have not rushed their young players. There isn't a whole lot of urgency in the organization for Del Zotto to make the jump to the NHL. With a plethora of young defenseman in their system who already have pro hockey experience, the Rangers can afford to have Del Zotto develop for one more season with the Knights. Then again, it would be great to see Del Zotto force the Rangers to the keep him.

Doubt that Del Zotto makes it

Im pretty sure Staal was pushing for the same at the same age, but got sent down for some more seasoning.

If there’s an injury, maybe (tho I can see a Sauer getting called up first).

Id love for it to happen, but I don’t think from camp he makes it. Maybe a mid-season call up if/when Redden/Rosival stink up the Garden.

I’d love to see DZ play so well that he forces the Rangers to keep him. But I think he’ll spend another year in London and will then make the Rangers next September.

There’s no use in rushing a 19 year old to the NHL when there are other options.

Don't rush him

If he has a knockout camp, the possibility is there for him to make the team.

But there are several even with or ahead of him – though he may have more upside in the future than the others – and there’s no real need to rush.

Gilroy probably has a spot that’s his to lose, you’re not going to pay a guy 1.75mm unless you’re pretty sure he’s NHL material. Sauer, Potter, Heikkinen and Sanguinetti are probably the group that the 6th and 7th D-man comes from, unless the brain trust feels they’re too weak and see a trade or FA signing opportunity.

I’d say give DelZotto another year to mature in London. He’ll have time to fill out and put a solid year together – plus he’s motivated to prove his worth based on the Olympic roster snub. September of 2010 will be his time – and by then he should truly be ready.

We sure do have a great crop of defense on their way

I wish they could find a way to get rid of Redden and Rosival, I have a hard time seeing the Rangers keep them (and their ridicous contracts) with all this talent on the way, I don’t mean for now, I mean from the next season onward. Incredible in a year or two all our defensemen may have come from our farm team, with Girardi being the only one undrafted.

im a little confused so someone help me

Mike Del Zotto was drafted what, last year? (2008) Bobby sanguinetti was drafted 3 years ago, comming up on four, and no one talks about him moving up to play for the big club, now last time i checked he had a good season last season just now, but still gets unmentioned most of the time when spoken of in the same circles as MDZ. is he not developing as expected? i was always under the impression that the rangers were home cooking 2 of their projected future offensive defensemen, but now it seems like theres only one thats consistently acknowledged (MDZ) and there are talks of him getting to the nhl only a year after he was drafted. is it me or does it sound like bobby is expendable or is he just being overlooked?

Sangs..

..had a really good season in Hartford last year. He made progress in his defensive play, which had been a major concern since he was drafted. He played in 78 regular season games, putting up 6G/36A for 42 points to lead the Hartford defense in points, while going minus-8 overall. Not bad for an offensive d-man who needed to work on the defense side of his game.

Most reports seem to think that he’s got a legitimate chance to make the Rangers’ roster – it’s all going to depend on training camp.

expect to see

Sangs make the team this year. Don’t forget that Sanguinetti had a great final year in the OHL notching 30 goals and 40 assists for 70 points. (or something to that effect) So far those numbers blow away Del Zotto’s OHL numbers, but again lets see what MDZ can do on a good team.

i definitly see what your saying

but im still not understanding why most rangers news pieces project mdz to make or definitly fight to make the team this season only a year after being drafted and bobby is kind of put to second place after mdz. Is michael del zotto a better player than he is? because i definitly remember their stats being almost identical except for bobbysang’s last ohl season where he blew him away in points. just looking for some kind of clarification on why is getting put up higher than the other when the other has more years under his belt.

KBrian, what?

“he had a good season last season just now” HUH???

by DenCimm on Aug 23, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I personally feel Del Zotto has much much more upside than Sangs. But Their both gonna be part of defense in the near future along with Staal, Girardi, Gilroy, and take your pick for the last one.

Dito man

Unless by some horrible fate Sather trades one of them for a number 1 center.

by Rangers Bleed Blue on Aug 23, 2009 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I doubt that will happen, I think Sather realizes we have the best future on defense in the league, he wouldnt ruin that. but we can only watch and see what happens.

More reasons why DZ would be better off in the OHL

There is no question that MDZ is a talented offensive minded player who has a bright future ahead of him.

However at 19 sending him back for another OHL season in my eyes could be the difference between him becoming a good player and a great one.

MDZ needs to step out from the shadows and become a leader now rather than have it forced upon him with the Rangers. He is a smart energetic player who has seen his play be discredited in part because of playing with some very talented players.

He is still improving on defense which is another reason to send him back to the OHL cause on the job with the Rangers will be a lot harder for him to do.

Let MDZ feel the burden of carrying a team on his shoulders as he needs to work on is being more selfish on offense. He has passed up on shots when he should have taken them.

Let him play 25 minutes a night in the OHL instead o 10-12 with the Rangers, the more he plays the better he will get, With London he will be able to have more of a teaching atmosphere than he would in NYC

yep.

completely totally and thoroughly agree with you

I thought...

I thought most people knew that MDZ is basically awful in the defensive zone. I don’t think there’s any way he makes the big club this year. Not only would it be terrible for the team,, but it’d be worse for his development.
Let’s be honest about our team’s defense. None of them are a true #1 defenseman, none of them can effectively clear the crease, and none of them are spectacular stay-at-home defenders. Adding Del Zotto to the Rangers blue line this year would make our defense much weaker, because he’s just not ready defensively – offensively, maybe, but definitely not defensively. It’s even questionable about Sangs, because he’s not great in his own zone either. MDZ would be a liability this year.

true

we are goin to hope redden/rosi/staal can fill the shoes offensively for us(not too optimistic about that) and bring up the more defensive of the youngins, which is why i dont think MDZ will get brought up this year. we need the youngings that are stronger in the defensive zone, not the ones that can put up a few more points. not really what we are looking for out of our 3rd pair
