Ranger Analysis: Where is Dubinsky?
All is quiet on the home front, and to be honest I can't figure out why. It has been exactly 121 days since the New York Rangers 2008-2009 season ended with a 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals. In those 121 days the Rangers have traded Scott Gomez and acquired Chris Higgins and Ryan McDonagh. The Rangers said goodbye to Nik Antropov and Nik Zherdev. The Rangers drafted Ray Bourque's son along with Chris Kreider and Ethan Werek. They have signed Marian Gaborik, Ales Kotalik, Donald Brashear and Vinnie Prospal. Sather even re-upped Ryan Callahan with a 2 year 4.6 million dollar deal which--at the time--seemed to be all but paving the way for Dubinsky to be re-signed as well.
But now it is August 28th and the Rangers message boards and beat writers are saying nothing about Dubinsky, mainly because nothing is happening. Regardless of the fact that he is not re-signed there have been no reports of either side being unhappy. There hasn't even been any official (no, bleacherreport doesn't count) leaks about Dubinsky being dangled as trade bait.
In fact the only Dubinsky news we got from the media was from a Larry Brooks article on August 16th citing that Dubinsky and the Rangers weren't agreeing on contract terms so Dubinsky would sign a 1 year 700K contract. That has yet to happen ... it's been two weeks.
A month ago Jim and I talked about this on our radio show and we told you all that if Dubinsky was not signed in 4 weeks then we would hit the panic button. At the time it was a joke. But now no one is laughing.
Earlier this year Glen Sather promised that "the youth will serve" after he raised ticket prices. Soon after this promise he re-signed Callahan to a two year deal and the Rangers traded out Gomez to bring in the younger and cheaper goal scorer in Higgins. The Rangers may have handed out three contracts to guys who were over 30 (Brashear, Prospal and Kotalik) but they also left spots open for their younger guys to come up. For the most part, the Rangers have a young and "home grown" team; even without Dubinsky.
Honestly there are bigger problems other than not re-signing a fan favorite. Currently Dubinsky is the Rangers first line center; and to be honest he has the best shot at suceeding. Sorry to all of you Drury fans but he just isn't fast enough and he wont cut it. It's about time we took the training wheels off of Dubinsky, let him carry a big time sniper on his wing, let's see how he preforms them.
I think all Rangers fans are excited to see how Dubinsky will preform this year. And I also think that Ranger fans are expecting big things from him as a player and as a leader. But he needs to be re-signed before he does anything, and unfortunately Ranger fans will not be able to breath easy until that happens.

Dubi on line 1... or... and some ramblings...
The nice thing about being able to get Brandon up on the 1st line with Gaborik is that Gabby has already shown that he can put up huge numbers with average centermen. It’s a no-pressure situation for Dubinsky – just let him do his thing, hit some bodies, and chip in. By season’s end, I’d be more than satisfied with 50 (20G, 30A) points from Dubi.
But what about a 1st line of Drury with Gaborik? If you recall, Drury had his best year stats-wise when he played with another world class sniper, Thomas Vanek, across from him on the other wing. The only issue there is we don’t have an all-star center in Danny Briere to be the pivot. But that brings up another issue… is Drury better off on the wing? I think so… and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the 2nd line with Chris Higgins down the middle.
I AM IN PANIC MODE
with the current roster we have..our squad seems to be better than last years. we will have more depth on the offensive front while relying on key guys on the back end (stall, girardi) added with some youth in both areas. hank is hank..we all know he can perform..we just need vali to step up a few more games so hank can rest. with all that being said, dubi completes this team. PERIOD. he is one of the hardest working players on the team (along with cally) day in and day out. slats needs to stop f’in around and get this future captain signed already. he has the potential to center the #1 line and signing him to a decent deal will show dubi we believe in him
Panicked too...
I’m getting nervous myself, but I don’t think our squad is better than last years. It’s been discussed a number of times on this site, but why not once more. Offensively we definitely have more firepower, but we’ve given up a lot of defensive responsibility in exchange for the firepower. Defensively it appears we’ll be younger, not necessarily better.
I see our goals against going up, hopefully our goals scored can go up more or it’s going to be a long season. Dubinsky was one of the better two-way players, we need him signed.
I think our squad is better than last year
And much more excititng

Partially agree...
I agree Joe, we are more exciting, but you have to agree we have lost a bunch in defensive “awareness” or responsibility. There have been several articles, one that I located by xcdudesquad on August 17th, which I too have participated in, which focuses on the betterment of the team through increased scoring, but not one article that I recall reading focused on the lost defense. We’ve commented, and lamented, quite a bit, but when it comes to calculations and figures it’s been completely ignored.
I’ve said before that I have historically been a Ranger’s optimist among my largely Devil fan loaded NJ town, but this year I’m not. Maybe it’s because I’ve been let down over and over again, maybe it’s because I’m right. We have increased our scoring but given up many of our 2-way players and PK specialists. I hate to beat a dead horse, but it’s been said time and time again, defense and goaltending wins, we have goaltending but are lacking in the defense department.
Dubinsky was one of the 2 way forces on this squad and right now is unsigned. BTW, Kessel who is mentioned below is not as defensively responsible as Dubie, so we would get weaker in that department….. again.
I haven’t even begun to discuss our blue-liners. OK so I will. R&R can potentially have better years(Can Redden have a worse year?), Staal and Girardi will hopefully continue to improve. The real problem is the final “3” spots. Should we fill the final spots from the farm system, our best prospects are offensive defensemen. Do we see a trend?
We have given up our most defensive minded forwards for scoring machines and given up our veteran defensemen for youth which are also have scoring on their mind. Poor Henrik.
I am hockey STARVED and if it weren’t for Blueshirt Banter(my new favorite website) and my 8 year olds summer hockey I may have cracked already, but I am big-time concerned about NYR’s potential this year. Call me a pessimist, I’m OK with that, but I see a 8th – 10th place finish in our future.
Your 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning Defense.
Dan Boyle 78 9 30 39 60
Pavel Kubina 81 17 18 35 85
Brad Lukowich 79 5 14 19 24
Cory Sarich 82 3 16 19 89
Ben Clymer 66 2 8 10 50
J. Cullimore 79 2 5 7 58
Darryl Sydor 31 1 6 7 6
Nolan Pratt 58 1 3 4 42
Darren Rumble 5 0 0 0 2
I mean, maybe I’m being blinded as a Rangers fan, but I don’t see how our Defense isn’t better than that group, even counting that two veterans are better than two rookies, generally speaking.
For the PK, I mean we still have 3 of 4 guys from the team last year (Dubinsky, Callahan, Drury), we just lost the best two. Higgins replaces one, dunno who replaces the other.
As for 2-way players, Gaborik played for LeMaire, I think he knows a little about defense. Higgins is a good 2-way player. So we only added Prospal and Kotalik whose defense may be questionable, but they’re assets on the PP we didn’t have last year, so I think that evens out to an extent.
And of course, we have Hank.

agreed
dubi has to be given the shot to be 1st line C if he is signed. Only thing i can think of is that sather might be trying to work dubs plus one of R&R’s ridiculous contracts for a big-time center. sather knows we need another C, and all of us know there are no other capable 1st line centers on the market, nor can we afford them. its also become apparent that sather is just itching to get one of R&R’s contracts of the payroll, and who knows, maybe even if it included dubs, its a price hes willing to take.
theres always the possibility of sather low-balling dubs, and since i believe dubs hasnt been around long enough for arbitration(right?) they might just be at a mexican standoff. i have to agree that the silience about the situation is weird and a bit concerning
dubi for kessel?
Acording to Larry Brooks article in NY Post rangers still might want to get Kessel , so Dubinsky could be part of that deal.

Hey, you know the old saying
Even a broken watch is right twice a day. The Brooks article was an article about nothing. He specifically states that the Rangers haven’t shown interest in Kessel in quite some time. He also goes on to say that Kessel is a #1 center…
with blazing speed, a major scoring touch and defensive skills, as well.
Defensive skills? A #1 center? Really?

Brooks has his sources that the others dont have
he breaks tons of stories. And I think that Kessel is a little defensivley than you are gicing him credit for.

can kessel even play C?
i dont think ive ever seen him play C, he is always on savards wing. thats another thing ive felt about kessel, would he put up those same numbers if he wasnt on savards wing. i love savard and he is one of the best playmakers in the league and i feel like alot of kessels goals(dont get me wrong, he has a great shot) are taylor made bc of savards setups. i say pass
Kessel is NO center (although he's sometimes listed as one)
…and his defensive play is lackadaisical at best, although it has improved slightly over the last couple of years. I think that he is a very talented scorer, but to give up $4 mil + of salary cap space for another NON-center is a bit insane at this point. Especially if Dubi was part of a package to get him, that would mean another center gone.

Kessel has nothing to do with Dubi. there is no reason to trade for Dubi for Kessel when they can just sign him and give up the picks. only problem with that is we gave up this years 3rd for Boyle. my guess says when the article talks about how they had them but not in a while is probably talking about around the draft before they dumped their 3rd.

question is where is he?
does anybody have any idea. i mean preseason starts in 3 weeks and homeboy is no where to be found. i hopehe doesn’t go play in russia. i really like him as a player.
JUST DAWNED ON ME!!!!
I’m reading all this Dubie talk about where he is at and I just realized. He is skating and working out with the team in Tarrytown at the MSG practice ice.
My son was in the NYR hockey camp last week, errrr 2 weeks ago, and Dubie skated with them a couple of times. For what it’s worth, he’s an awesome guy to talk to, very friendly, sociable and easy to speak to. Kind of a regular guy. If it matters, Voros was there almost everyday as well.
no worries
Dubie is a ranger hasnt even had an offer from another team,he will play the season out an sign a big contract next season lets not forget the rangers didnt have to worry unless another team made him an offer.we have the right to match any offer as well.So he plays the year out@600k and next year i believe he will be signed to a long term contract. The only reason we signed cally was to avoid arbitration—gotta run back to work
we have the right to match any offer BUT
we might not have the money to back it up

Doesn't make sense to me.
I know what you’re saying but….Why sign him at the qualifier and then potentially have to pay through the nose next year to keep him. Not to mention there will be other people to re-sign next year as well. The team is just about set for this year and we have the space to sign him now. Why wait???
maybe they told dubi to chill out
while they tried to sign a veteran D-man. Maybe if they can snag one then they give him the prelim offer of 700K, and maybe if they cant get their hands on a veteran D-man then they take care of him long-term this year. they mightve told dubi to relax and have a fresca
The word from the inner circles a few weeks ago was that
they could not agree on the years. Sather wanted to sign him for 3 years but Dubi said no because he wants his arbitration rights and he wants to be out of his contract the same year he is a UFA.
The Ranger Reporter - My Ranger Blog!
Blueshirt Banter: Covering the New York Rangers
UFA age is 27, Dubinsky is 23, so 2013 is his UFA year. Essentially by signing him for three years he circumvents arbitration for the next few offseasons.
In arbitration, Dubinsky probably gets $2 million, hence why there is such a gap here, and why he wants his arbitration years (it’s a guaranteed raise).
This could get ugly.
it might get ugly I'm just hoping it wont

Guys.......
Do you think we are the only ones who know that we need a center for the 1st line? Glen savior will get it right. He will. I hope he does it by re signing Dubi. Byt we will have a 1st line center by the time camp opens. Truthfully, something big is going to happen, I feel it, Heatly…maybe free some cap space by packaging Rozi IDK…..something will happen, you all know it.
GAH!
Why Heatley comes up in every discussion I don’t know.
The mere thought of giving up a ‘potential’ 1st line center for Heately boggles the mind in ways heretofore unimaginable.
Unless Murray has succumbed to Jedi Sather’s mind tricks and dropped the price of Heatley drastically – this has been a dead issue for months.
Heatley is a 50 goal scorer, Jagr was a supposed cancer in the locker room, but was great on the Rangers, I don’t care about Heatley’s past, if he can score 35 goals for us, he will be among the team leaders. If the price is right, you have to pull the trigger. Common sense. we are not getting out of the first round unless guys step up. how many guys on this squad have 30 goal potential 1? I want Dubi back but if Dubi goes in a package with Rozi and some others…..we get another big time threat, maybe clear cap space, IDK. But you gotta believe sather knows what is goin on…..no matter how many bad contracts he made….the guy is not dumb. Look at those edmonton teams……he drafted…..the talent was amazing. You can’t be a winner on every sinlge transaction. I don’t know why I am defending him, but he is a decent GM. Ducks for cover.
30 goal potential
Two have done it: Gaborik, Drury
Prospal had 29 goals in 62 games, which is close enough
25 potential – Higgins, Kotalik, Callahan
That’s 6 guys with at least 25 goal potential. That doesn’t even count Dubinsky and Avery who will be in double digits. Offense is not going to be the issue this year.
Not to mention Heatley is a RW, so he has no position on the team unless you want to roll the dice and see how either Callahan or Kotalik fare on the other wing. Yes, he’s talented, but you don’t need a me-first guy on this team. He’ll get destroyed by the NY media with that attitude.

On a first line with Gaborik
Dubinsky and Prospal could both score 20 also. And lord knows what you get out of Anisimov. So there’s a lot of optimism on the offensive side.
by George E. Ays on Aug 28, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions
You used the key words – “if the price is right”.
Part of the “price” is balancing the roster. As others have pointed out, you’re already overloaded at RW and underwhelmed at C, and you want to get rid of a C for yet another RW?
The other part of “price” is dealing with the cap. Not just this year – but planning for the future. This year, by moving Rozsival, you’ve freed up 5mm. There’s about 2.52mm ‘free’. Heatley eats all of that up. You’re now forced to use 3 rookies on D – which is patently insane. And you’re hosed for next year when you’ve got to sign Staal, probably Dubinsky again, and figure out if you’re keeping Higgins, Girardi and Prospal.
If the cap situation were different (Drury was at 5mm instead of 7+, and Redden was at 4.5mm instead of 6.5) – I’d probably agree with you – go for it and figure out how to make it work with lines. But with the cap as it is and everything else mentioned above – no way.
3 rookies on D?
A couple of years ago that was Staal, Girardi, Tyutin on a team that beat the Devils in the first round and played the Pens tight in the second. I can’t remember the rest of the D men….Malik and Rozi. maybe Maras first year. That not a big deal since the current stable of rookie d men are highly regarded. Realistically, would you consider Drury a true 30 goal threat? I’d say only if he played against us 6 times a year. lol. Gaborik is gonna score 30+, you can ink that in…anyone else? Probably not. I also must stress regarding Heatley, this guy is a true talented goal scorer, We get one of them occassionaly and usually past their prime, think Bure although he was a +1point per game player when healthy. you don’t mind spending cap money on players who will work out……guys who are dead weight or question marks should concern you instead. Heatly makes the Rangers deadly, they then have a tandem that can be as proficient as any in the league. I won’t go as far to say Crosby and Malkin like but we are talking much talent. Something we have not seen ever on Broadway.
Can a guy learn to become a center?
I have to beleive a professional would be more adept at a switch, its a matter of learning the routes and taking faceoffs. So do not take on of the top wingers in the league if you can get him? Who cares about Kotalik or Lisin if you grab Heatley? They become spare parts, likely go in the return back to ottawa. I’m dreaming I know, but The Rangers lacked scoring punch last year, lost a ton of close games I’d like to see them not have so many nail biters for a change, Henrik stands on his head….give him a break too.
dubinsky not signed yet ?
look i think dubi has a great future in the n.h.l. but if he is demanding more then what he is worth then him and his agent are nuts. if he is looking for more then 1.5 mill then its insane. he has to prove that he is worth the raise i want to see this kid score some goals and be a leader before i break the bank on him lets hope a deal is done before opening night…
