Rangers Rumor: Leafs and Rangers talking Zherdev?
This from Steve Zipay at Blue Notes...
That's the word in hockey circles in Toronto, where rumors bounce up and around in a major media echo chamber. Rangers are not confirming anything, not even whether a decision on whether to sign or reject the right winger's $3.9-million arbitration award is coming today.
Do the whispers make sense?
Perhaps. Leafs czar Brian Burke needs scoring and has an excess of defensemen. Zherdev can put up 25-plus on the first line. although the press scrutiny will be intense.
For the Rangers, there wouldn't be a No. 1 center coming back, and realistically, Burke and the rest of the GMs can gamble that the Rangers won't sign Zherdev by tomorrow and he'll be un unrestricted free agent.
Ian White, 25, is one of those extra Leafs D. He was playing 20-plus minutes at the end of last season (including on the PP) and filled in on the wing. He was 10-16-26 and plus 6. And forward Lee Stempniak (UFA after 2009-10 season) seems like a spare at $2.5 mil (14-30-44 in 75 games, including with the Blues).
Just sayin'.....
I wouldn't mind a trade Toronto. Ian White is a very capable Defenseman that can eat up alot of minutes and hold his own in his zone. Although I would not want Stempniak, as I feel he would take up a roster spot for one of our prospects. What do you guys think of this? What are your feelings on this situation?

White is good..
but we have enough D-men. What we need is a number one center and Stempinak is far from that. No thanks, but I say we do trade him though.
Just sent James Mirtle an email on this, I figure since he is in Toronto he may have heard something. If he gets back to me I will let you guys know

I think burke is one with a big enough ego to think he can make wade redden a player and he was known to have interest in him before so if we could pawn him off with Z i really dont care what the return is as addition by subtraction is definitely at play there.
Well Burke said that
the report that claimed he had interest in Redden was false. And Burke is a great GM so i wouldnt think that he would take Redden.

need a better metaphor as there is no such thing as a short OJ trial.

lol
regardless of the metaphor Burke said he had no intrest in Redden. Word is that the Leafs want to off some D men and i wouldnt be surprised if Kaberle was in the mix. Zherdev is young enough and talented enough to retain that kind of reward.

if Sather can do that then he has worked magic, but i dont see them giving up Kaberle for Z and if they do i would love to see the rangers pawn kaberle off somewhere else like Boston for Kessel.
The plus to getting a player like White as was originally talked about as it gives even more breathing room to dealing Z. I also wrote a fanpost about how trading Z to Carolina for their RFA headache in Babchuk should be considered if they can do it and also would allow Sather to more readily move Rozi.

Yeah i have to say leetchie
if the Ranger got Kaberle iw ouldnt move him at all. He is the biggest bargian in the NHL. A 60 point defenseman who gets 4 mil a year … sign me up.

I apologize Joe
I thought Tomas only had 1 not 2 years left on his deal. He is more of a 50 than 60 pt d-man but your point is well taken. That said this team could use another sniper and if Kaberle could net Kessel you would have to think about if for no other reason that Kessel is 22 and Tomas is 31.

Leetchie i 100% agree with that!

i just wonder what we would have to add on our side to make that happen. we have to remember that Kaberle comes at a cost of 4.25 for another two years. we would have to move some salary to make this happen. and i doubt that would be redden or rozsival.
no one says you have to move them in the same deal. im sure someone, dallas comes to mind cause of zubov being gone would take rozi if the cost was low.

Toronto
Is looking to move Kaberle. I don’t know that they’ll take Redden back but there was the interest reported at one point at the beginning of FA, if they can get package of Stempniak and Kaberle back for Redden and Zherdev, sign me up.
White works too of course.
that's never going to happen
kaberle has real value. maybe they take redden from us give white to us and then deal kaberle somewhere else like boston for kessel but we arent getting kaberle for that kind of package.

#1 Center
Drury is our number one center, I don’t know what all the hooplah about a number one center is about.

even better metaphor
Drury is a number one center like Redden is a Power Play QB. Well maybe not this extreme level.
Sorry Rob i have always viewed Drury as a number 2.

I do not know if Bostin is still in the Kaberle mix
When they signed Morris I think they closed the door on Tomas.
Kaberle is the only thing in return that I would want from Toronto. Maybe Zherdev is the only thing Burke and the Leafs can attain right now.

before we talk trading him, we do have to sign him first. That’s been polled already…. alot… sigh.

nik zherdev yes or no ?
i would trade zheredev for harold snepts if he wasnt retired lets get this over already …..
Trade or Keep Zherdev
I don’t see why this is a question. Isn’t it, cap wise, pretty much impossible to keep Zherdev at that salary AND fill in the rest of the holes on the team?
Aha but perhaps
more moves are on the horizon. One never knows

i'm still sticking with sign him.
We all know what happens when we let our top three scorers from the season before walk. Plus, I think him and Gabby could feed off each other well. Zherdev’s a great passer, as well as one of the best stick handlers in the league.
