Beating a dead Horse
Now i know ive been complaining alot about the rangers of late, but this really irks me. Everyone knows the deal. Nik Zherdev will most likely NOT be a ranger in the very short future.
But here is what drives me crazy about glen sather.
The man simply doesnt know what he is doing. He would rather pay Wade Redden an incredible amount of money for a long time, than pay a YOUNG and incredibly skilled top 6 foward a good amount for 1 year.
He trades away a solid d man in fedor tyutin and gets zherdev. Now youre gonna dump zherdev and we are stuck for a couple more seasons with redden?! It doesnt make sense to me at all.
Who would you ranter have on your team? Zherdev or Redden? I dont even think you can say Redden and mean it. Not at that salary. Even with a lower salary, i wouldnt want him.
Zherdev will be 25. redden is in his 30s and on the decline. He isnt going to have a breakout season. Zherdev could.
If Sather didnt smoke crack a year ago before he signed wade redden, then dubinsky and zherdev would be signed no problem.
Ive been a zherdev fan for a long time now. Yes he is like alex kovalev. Remember how kovalev was on Pitt? imagine a few seasons like that from Zherdev on the rangers? We arent talking about Bobby Holik, or Anson Carter here. Two of the biggest hacks to come to broadway.(but i think anson carter + money for jagr was the greatest deal ever.) We are talking about an actual skilled player. He is unmotivated at times yes... but i can deal with that if he scores 70 points. i think his potential is totally worth it for this season.
Gaborik for 7 mil... the guy is made of glass. At least Zherdev will play games for you and give you the potential of being a kovalchuk. gaborik gives you the potential to be pat lafontaine but with groin injuries. Think of him as a Jose Reyes of the hockey world.
I leave you with this brain buster:

You can't fix stupid...
Sather put this team in a tough spot with his decisions in summers past. This summer has been a cool breeze of change, with some welcomed and smart moves by the GM. However, he still needs to go, as he is the bigger problem if you ask me.
The situation is eerily similar to the Red Sox before their 2004 championship. Dan Duquette brought the Sox to another level and really got the ball moving in the right direction. But he couldn’t finish the puzzle, which left the door open for Epstein to replace him. I would love to see some fresh blood come in and really make some smart choices that could make this team a top contender.
Only time will tell, though.

I'm sorry dude but seriously...
Wade Redden isn’t going anywhere. Who is going to take that contract (realistically)? How can you even say with a straight face that Fedor Tyutin is better than Wade Redden. Besides this year the guy has cracked 20 points once. If the Rangers hadn’t been stymied by Tom Renney’s defensive “five in the picture” system then Redden’s point total would have been higher. Wade Redden is an established 1st pair dman, something that Tyutin would never have been on the NYR.

I am going to be very honest with you on this one
Zherdev is a Sather player. Sather targeted him for a year and waited for an chance to snag him and gave up a very valuble defenseman for him. If Renney was the head coach i guarentee you Z would have been signed to a 4 year 16 mil contract by now.
But this is Tortorellas team now and if Zherdev walks its because Torts doesnt want him in the fold. Word around inner circles is thats the case, but we will have to see.
And hey rob welcome back man. Where the hell have you been!

Wasn’t there a recent comment about the guy…. and his attitude… but removed? I understand why it was removed, but that is exactly what I am thinking right now, and it couldn’t be more right.
Dude. Calm down. Remember a post of yours a while ago and you said something like there is no reason to be optimistic? Sather, really, hasn’t done anything bad this summer. Teams change all the time, you can’t keep everybody, there are always some people fans won’t like, it’s a business. But when the new season comes around, as a fan, that’s when you get excited and optimistic because with new seasons come new memories and moments, and anything can happen. The year after the lockout the Rangers were predicted to finish 30 out of 30 teams but they made the playoffs, and to be honest, that was one of the best years of hockey I watched in my life. After free agency, everyone gets a little antsy. The year hasn’t started so before you make your predictions and give up all hope, let the players play and I’m sure you’ll be surprised.
The title, “beating a dead horse”, really said it all, and I just really felt the need to say this.

love it
i love everyones thoughts on the subject. Obviously i am a zherdev fan. I would LOVE for the rangers to come out and play like they did post lock out, but sather just doesnt give me that, THIS IS THE YEAR kind of feelings. he hasnt put together a decent team since the oilers when he was handed gretzky and messier. ill have more to say in the morning

The hell?
This is not a one or the other scenario. Sather is not consciously making the decision to pay Redden instead of Zherdev. The Redden contract is already over and done with, and there’s nothing anyone can do to make it go away. Yes, unfortunately that means we cant afford to sign players like Zherdev. Too bad.
But in reality, Redden’s contract and Zherdev not re-signing could not possibly have less to do with each other.

indirectly
I feel (along with everyone else mostly) that the effect of the redden contract is that it ties up so much money for 1 inefficient player, which could be dispersed to a couple decent players.
Thats what im getting at.
i agree there is nothing we can do. i just would rather see the rangers spend their money on people who are more likely to have a breakout year than someone who is about to have another more unproductive year from the previous season for about the 4th year in a row.
That article about how zherdev wouldve had a contract in the league of carter ovechkin and perry, but he isnt worth that. i get that. i wish his price tag wasnt so high. I just dont want to see him sign with a team like the islanders or devils and see him become successful. Especially becaue you know he will face the rangers 6 times a year and actually try, which means he will be productive.
whatever… The rangers will close the book on him, now we just gotta hope our players actually step up this season and start scoring goals and winning games.
