Just saw on Twitter that at the big Lighthouse rally today Islander fans were chanting "1940". It doesn't surprise me that on a day that is crucial to the future of the franchise, their fans are more worried about big brother in NYC.

Didn’t 1994 happen already? or am I just dreaming.
There should be Kansas City chants at that rally.

"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"

Bahaha

FYI, it was actually in response to one of the speakers who acknowledged he was a blueshirt fan yet supported this project.

But regardless, well played. It’s about as relevant as the average Potvin chant. ;)

That stuff is always tough: In one way they’re traditions fit for bringing a crowd together, and kind of make me chuckle; in another sense, they get old and sad. “1940” is almost funnier to me now that it’s anachronistic, but it’s also a blinding reminder that it’s not quite right and, well, just begs for “um, 1983?”

For me, as with all sports banter, it sort of depends on the spirit and how belligerently drunk/obnoxious someone is.

How is it going with the Lighthouse Project anyway? Is it being passed today or is just another discussion today?

by b4mv01 on Aug 4, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just another (necessary) step in the process, though probably the best one yet. It seems like things are going well and headed to the finish line — there just will be more procedural, bureaucratic and alteration hurdles before then.

thats how it always goes haha just curious but if the Islanders have to leave Long Island will you (and your brethren over at Lighthouse) become Kansas City fans or look for a new team to root for?

by b4mv01 on Aug 4, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I haven’t heard anyone say they’d keep rooting them on; it would probably be an orphan lost-in-wilderness feeling. Cannot conceive of switching loyalties to a new NHL team, so whether I at least kept an eye on the players would probably depend on the circumstances of a move (e.g. which owner, why). I mean, if Wang had to sell because the Lighthouse didn’t happen, I couldn’t blame him.

An interesting topic is what fans say about a move to Queens or Brooklyn. Some say that would end it; others would be happy just to keep the team reachable. Ha, fandom! It has no rhyme or reason.

KANSAS CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HA!!!!!

How about the Icelanders get some wingers to play with Tavares and stop wasting their money on 5 different goalies.
