Ranger Analysis: What kind of season can we expect from Ryan Callahan?

Recently NHL.com put up a story about players that they think will have a breakout year this season. They did it in a top 10 format and had Ryan Callahan as fourth. Here is what NHL.com had to say about Callahan in their article:

The speedy winger is one of coach John Tortorella's favorites. He plays a gritty, straight-line, no-nonsense game, goes hard into the corners and dashes to the front of the net. Callahan put up 22 goals last season and has the capabilities to do more. He's one of the Rangers' most humble players, but also one of their most important.

Now we are all aware of kind of season that Callahan had. His 22 goals were two off the Rangers lead and his 18 assists gave him a career high 40 points—27 points higher than last season’s mark. Callahan is already a fan favorite—especially since he is home grown talent—and is well on his way to becoming one of John Tortorella’s "go-to guys." All of this was taken into account when he signed his 2 year 4.6 million dollar contract.

So what are realistic expectations for Callahan this season? Well lets dissect this a little bit. Obviously his minutes will increase under Tortorella—as stated above Callie is a Torts' favorite. Callahan should see more power play time, and with the re-vamped power play that can convert, who knows what kind of numbers he can put up there. And his numbers should increase with the new up-tempo system.

When it comes to line combinations it’s safe to say we can expect him on at least the second line, and maybe even the first. On the power play he will definitely play with the likes of Gaborik, Kotalik, Drury, Dubinsky (hopefully) and Higgins, just to name a few.  On this newly orchestrates team Callahan seems to be one of the main scorers on roster. He will be leaned on this year a lot more than he was last year. So what can we expect from him?

With all of this information what kind of numbers are we looking at? Is a 60 point performance too much to expect? What about 30+ goals this year? So tell me—in the comments—what do you expect from him?

There is no one I am more excited about

It would not be a suprise for me to see Callahan on the first line with at least 35-40 goals, 60-70 points, dynamic is the word that comes to mind, because even when he is not be getting goals, which will probally not be that often, he will be helping the rangers get wins.

Helping the Rangers Get Wins

I’m hesitant to speculate on the hopefully improved individual stats callahan may put up, perhaps for fear of jinxing… BUT the bottom line is that he was instrumental to rangers wins ALL season long. easily amongst the most consistent players on the team, he almost always lead the team in hits, and not of the stupid “take yourself unnecessarily out of the play” variety. the thing is, i feel like every player has at least the capacity to play the way this guy does and its a wonder to me why we dont see it more often… the garden crowd is smart and we reward (w/ applause and appreciation) those players that play hard, play often, and play smart. i would be more than satisified w/ a 25-25-50 season as long as he keeps playing with the same intensity and on ice leadership that he has throughout his short career. he makes all the players on the team better, regardless of the points he puts up.

Callahan is a RW, Gaborik is a RW

I don’t think they’re both seeing 1st line ice time. Unless Callahan moves to LW, which I guess is possible but not likely.

70 pts for Cally isn’t realistic, at least not yet. I’m saying 28-24-52, with 8PP and 2 SH goals, just for fun.

Wings

With a full year in the Tortorella system, and certainly contingent on him staying healthy, I’d guess 26 – 30 – 56.

Which interestingly enough – would replace the production of that recently departed overpaid enigma.

Callahan is a Dog

WAIT before y’all go nuts on me … I like Callahan so much I named my new dog after him. Seriously. Why? Because my dog is tough, loyal, always shows up when called upon, never takes a day off and never complains. (Hope Ryan doesn’t mind)

I agree with the tempered expectations. A 60-70 point season puts him in lofty territory. Wingers with 70pts last year included Heatly, Hossa and Kane – 60 pt. players included Kessel, Vanek, and Recchi. Certainly doable for Ryan but another campaign around 27-25-52 would be fabulous.

The article from NHL.com was interesting. Out of the ten plays singled out, only Callahan and Filppula were not 1st round draft picks. In fact the only other player not a top ten pick was Giroux at 22. Guess the Rangers can draft a little.

What i think should be noted about Callahan

is that his Heart is much bigger than his raw skill. Most of his goals come from his hockey smarts and his hustle more than his raw talent. This is good and bad because he will always give it his all but he could falter.

Those of you shelling out 70 points i think is a little off the mark. My personal guess is 50is MAYBE 60 but i wouldnt say much more. At least not yet. Heres to hoping i’m wrong.

I have faith cally goes 30 goals, 25 assists, 200+ hits, and having a plus\minus of +12 all while wearing an ‘A’. Forget 60 or 70 points, those stats would make me happy. Lets not forget he played 2nd pk unit all year. He’s valuable in too many ways to expect too many points from him this year. Just keep doing what your doing cally.

40 goals?

im with joe on this one, callie gets most of his goal scoring done because of his work ethic not because of his amazing skill. i love the guy but im really not sure where all of this “he will score 40 goals” thing comes from. i honestly hope im wrong but i always thought hed score high twenties low thirties and be a constant grinder for our team, heres hoping he does better than expected.

25- 35 for sure!!!!!

I believe callahan will be the rangers most consistent player this season. 25-35 girls is not to much to ask and I see a lot of what boston fas saw out of Phil kessel last season. The skys the limit for the upstate ny native….LET’S GO RANGERS!!!!!

oops!!!

Meant goals but 25-35 girls is probably accurate for him too!!!!

Just because gabby has tons of potential does not mean that he will be the most consistent. He needs to prove he can stay healthy and as for lundqvist….hes our backbone.. I’m talking about our most consistent forward.

25-35 girls would be a good season for anybody. Maybe except Wilt Chamberlain

He finished 4th in the league in hits.

I don’t see him leading the team in every stat possible(except PIM), but I do see him having a great season. I could see him wearing an “A” this season. 32-28-60.

31-27-58 thats what I got him for

by Poe678 on Aug 7, 2009 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

i’m saying about 25-30 goals, and only 30 if he’s on the power play regularly, i think he’ll have a lot more assits this year which could inflate his points, but i see him being about 60 points maybe 70 if like i said he is on the powerplay…

callahan what to expect ?

in a full year under torts cally is only going to get better i think it is not his nature to be a 35 45 guy .but i see him maybe getting 25 to 30 this year but he is going to be a productive player…..

by lohaus#54 on Aug 8, 2009 4:06 PM EDT reply actions

I see him putting up a solid 25 to 30 goals, which would be a very solid contribution from a young, hustle player like Callahan. But who knows maybe he will thrive in Tort’s high pressure, high fore checking system and put up more than 30.
