Rangers News: Traverse City Prospects Tournament
It's that time of the year again, and for those who can't wait for the upcoming NHL season, it's your chance to watch and follow some of the prospects competing in Rangers Blue.
For the full story, head on over to the Rangers website.
Here are the highlights:
This marks the fourth consecutive year that a team of Rangers prospects will be going to Traverse City for the eight-team tournament. Two years ago, the Blueshirts went undefeated in four games to win the 2007 championship, beating Columbus in the title game. Last year, the Rangers got off to a slow start but finished in sixth place, beating Tampa Bay and St. Louis in their last two games.
Competing in the tournament's Eastern Conference group, the Rangers will play round-robin games against Carolina (Sept. 6), Atlanta (Sept. 7), and the host Detroit team (Sept. 9). Their placement in the round-robin will determine who they face in the championship round that concludes the tournament.
Should the Blueshirts place first in the Eastern Division, the Rangers would face the Western champion for the tournament title on Sept. 10. Regardless of their finish, they will appear in at least one of the Sept. 10 placement games. This year's Western Conference teams are Columbus, Dallas, Minnesota and St. Louis.
Look forward to seeing many of the Rangers' recent draft picks in the tournament, and, in the Rangers' main training camp.

Im really looking forward to seeing evgeny grachev in the near future because i really believe he is that special player that the rangers have in their development program above all others. By the way can someone please explain to me why everyone says that byers is making the team this year and why he always gets included on any roster, this kid looks like absolutely nothing special.

Byers
I’m not one of those who has Byers written on the roster in stone to start the season, but I do think he’s incredibly underrated by most Rangers fans. He’s a big body who’s not afraid to throw his weight around, won’t back down from a scrap, is good along the boards and most importantly, has a great touch in front of the net. He was well on his way to a 30+ goal season in Hartford last season before he got hurt, and when he came back in the playoffs it was like he hadn’t missed a beat (in fact, he was one of the best players on the ice.)
Unfortunately, he could have a hard time winning a spot out of camp with guys like Arnason, Rissmiller, and Voros hanging around. But depending on who else starts the season in Hartford, I can see him being one of the first call-ups when injuries strike.

Hmm
With “stars” like Vorros and Rissmiller, if ihe is anything like you say, it sounds like a clean fitl

It's not that he's the best prospect
But I honestly believe he’s the best fit for a 4th line role out of all our prospects. If you assume Anisimov will earn a roster spot, then the first 3 lines are filled. Torts isnt going to waste a spot on someone like Grachev when he’ll only get 5 minutes a game on a non-scoring line. Byers has shown better-than-expected offensive skills, but I think, for this year at least, he’s the best option for a 4th line vacancy.
He’s also making about half as much as Voros and Rissmiller, so if the Rangers make any moves to press themselves against the cap, he’ll be an even more attractive option.
