Rangers News: Dubinsky will miss camp opening due to contract problems
Okay I know we have all been joking about this for awhile now but things are starting to get pretty serious. Steve Zipay is reporting that Brandon Dubinsky will most likely NOT be at camp this Saturday. Here are some highlights from Zipay's story:
Talks went nowhere today, and it appears the center will keep training elsewhere without an 11th-hour breakthrough. "We met with Glen (Sather) again this morning and couldn't reach an accord," Dubinsky's agent Kurt Overhardt said a few minutes ago. "He really wants to to play, but we're in a holding pattern." Several offers were discussed today, but Overhardt said that "unless the Rangers call, it's status quo. Our expectations are not great."
Click after the jump for even worse analysis from Zipay.
As if seeing that was not bad enough here is the rest of ZIpay's article:
The tone has changed since Thursday afternoon, when Overhardt was discouraged but more positive.
Dubinsky, 23, a Group II restricted free agent, isn't happy with a reported $522,500 qualifying offer or the 1 or 2 year offers from the team. It is believed there were counteroffers made by Overhardt today. "It's unfortunate," said Overhardt, who also represents players such as Travis Zajac and Marty Turco.
In 170 games for the Rangers, Dubinsky has 27 goals and 54 assists.
The Rangers retain Dubinsky's rights, but if the impasse lingers, those rights could be traded.
Earlier today, coach John Tortorella said he wasn't sure what was happening "with the center ice situation. It won't affect us in camp." He added that he wouldn't hold any grudges.
I bolded the part that sent off the most red flags. So we should probably start with the good news which would be that Tortorella wont be upset if Dubinsky misses a few days to resolve this.
On to the bad news. Apparently talks were not as close as Dubinsky lead us on to believing a few days ago, and now not only will he not be at camp for tomorrows opening but he may not be a Ranger at all. Remember that Phil Kessel is still on the open market going through the same issues.
Regardless of where Dubinsky's rights would end up there is now a serious chance that he wont be on the Rangers for much longer. The gap between the two sides is apparently bigger than once thought and now it might come back to haunt the Rangers.
I don't know about you but this is the last thing I wanted to hear before hockey opened up. And to think that yeserday my problems were so far away. Don'tbreath yet, thoughts?

Things went from bad to worse...
without Dubinsky our top center would be arguably Prospal or Drury, and I dont need to tell you where the problems lie there.

WTF is Sather doing!
Up untill this moment I honestly could say no big deal something’s going to get done, and a big part of me still wants to believe that, but I have to say I’m getting worried.I feel Brandon is a HUGE part of the Rangers future, but I guess Glen feels differently. It’s offical guys now is the time to WORRY!

It's time for us to all realise that this is a buisness
Sather has all of the leverage and he is using it, too much of it, but he is using it

i agree sather has all of the leverage but still no top line center.
Dubinsky knows as well as everyone else who the best center is for Gabz and the 1st line is. What a putz Sather is because if Sather forces dubz to play for the qualifier, he looses in the end because unless he breaks the bank when dubinsky becomes one of the vital team leaders and a free agent next year, we can all say goodbye to duby as a ranger because if sather pushes dubz now, he’ll make it hell for slats next year just watch….. larry brooks said it best patrick rismiller got a cool mill a year for what?
…..and i will just add brashear, voros and redden as throwing his money around like water. so when he has no leverage its money wasting time but if he has all the leverage hes a tight wad. karma is a bitch guys and unfortunatly ranger fans will pay the price in the end.

Complete Roster?
Hey, you mentioned that you had the final training camp roster (with or without Dubi). Could you post that? Zip added a few names, but my numbers aren’t adding up correctly. Thanks!

I think Dubi will be traded!!
In the begining of the summer I thought for sure Dubi was coming back. I saw Cally get 2 years at around 2.3 million. Which I thought was to much money for a guy that has only scored 20 goals once. Petr Prucha got 1.6 million per and he scored 30 goals. Anyway Cally put up 40 points. Dubi has put up two straight 13 goal seasons. Not very impressive from a goal stand point. However he scored 41 points last year. So if u are comparing the two players they are very equal. Sather most now something about Dubi we don’t. He has leverage and I don’t blame him for using it. What makes Cally worth 2.3 million and Dubi only with 600,000 or even a million. There is more to this then just leverage. I am thinking he might be moved in the right trade. I guess only time will tell.

dubi where are you ?
with all the garbage sather signed over the years to big bucks this really is pathectic it smells like a dubi for kessel swap ?

Trading Dubi
All we can hope for now is that they don’t trade him for some 35 year old tool. (Richards). This team never has the patience to stick with its younger players. While Dubi disappeared in the middle of last season, he had a strong finish. These are the same people who rescheduled FAN APPRECIATION weekend in the middle of Labor Day with NO current players.
Oh, wait, we have Donald Brashear…..

Hard to beleive Brashear is so soft spoken, he’s kinda funny but i’ll predict, it will take him 2 or 3 games for Ranger fansto forget about Betts and the 8pts he scored in 81 games last season….count on it. this guy is gonna win everyone over….like esa tikannen…a douche to play against but a great teamate. Watch them run Gaby…..once, then see what happens.

He’s like 50 isn’t he? Agree that Betts/Freddie had great kills but never turned them into points and they had a million opportunities.

Hey glad this promted so much discussion BUT
Dubinsky very well might end up a Ranger, there are just currently contract problems. There are rumors that Dubinsky might be involved in a Kessel trade but nothing has come from that yet.
As of right now he is still a Ranger

if
dubinsky isn’t signed this will make some things interesting as far as camp and rookies making the team… Would i be wrong to assume that prospal would be slotted in as a center and we would be left looking for another winger? Enver Lisin would be a logical choice or possible grachev, just throwing some things out there even though grachev is probably a year away, i would still feel that dubinsky will be a ranger this year, but beyond this year is now a great question with the way sather has handled this…

i agree
Joe no situation without dubinsky is good… i was just saying that without him signed our lineup may be forced to make shuffles which could prove to be detrimental in the case of a guy like grachev, who would be playing a bit to early in the nhl and could suffer lack of confidence, Sather is a penny pincher when it comes to taking care of his own, no reason that his contract should have even gotten to this point…

Whether or not Dubi is a number 1 right now he will be within a year or 2. He is a young player with a lot of potential, throw some extra dough in the deal. If Voros can make 1 million dubi can make that.
by nwahs s on Sep 11, 2009 10:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I really just don’t get it. :shakes head:
What I really don’t get is the “get Kessel” talk. The guy had ONE good year – last year – and played 70 games plus busted up his shoulder. (36G/24A/60 pts – plus 8)
In his 1st 2 years w/BOS (06/07 and 07/08), his line:
152 Games – 30G – 36A – 76 PTS and a combined MINUS 18
In Dubi’s 1st 2 years (07/08 and 08/09):
164 Games – 27G – 54A – 82 PTS and a combined PLUS 2
So – in their 1st 2 years, they’re reasonably comparable from a stats perspective, and DUBI PLAYED EVERY GAME – and in addition he was an overall PLUS player.
People are reasonably talking about Dubi putting up 60 pts if he plays with Gaborik – hmmmm….that looks an awful lot like what Kessel did his third year (see above).
Un-frackin’-believable
by dbmaven on Sep 11, 2009 11:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
which is why i would argue on the other end that where kessel is demanding like 5 mil a year sather should stop being a cheapskate and lock dubi up long term because right now he should be able to get at least 3 years for 2.5 mil or less per. i have said all summer that 4/10 should be about right for all sides.

What a shame!!!!!
This is what happens when you sign players on the first day of free agency because you panic that you might not have enough depth at a position….(Wade Redden, Aaron Voros).. Shame on Glen Cheapskate Slather!!!!! Hes a horrendous evaluator of talent that always seems to let young gems slip away….. (Marc Savard!!!!) Not sure which blogger wrote the comment but he mentioned that the fact that Patrick Risssmiller got a cool 1 million is reason enough for Duby to say ..WHAT THE F$$$!!!! And I totally agree. Aaron Voros got a solid contract because at the time Slats wanted to recapture the aura of the Avery factor. Look how that worked out…Cmon man!! I wish nothing but the best for Duby and I will support the hard working kid wherever he is lacing up his skates… Mark Messier for G.M !!! ASAP !!!

Savard is the guy
Savard is the guy you want, not Kessel. It’s been discussed over and over and over again, there is no need for a Kessel. #1 center and left wings are where the holes are, oh and obviously D.

"fuck Duby and his 12 goals"
is an un-intelligent statment. First of all he has 13 goals and second of all if his goals totals are all you judge him by then you need to choose a new sport.

i wouldnt say he is overrated
he scored 36 goals in 70 games with mono and an injury. That’s impressive. I just think that some people are expecting him to score 50 goals and I just dont think that will happen.

maybe it wouldnt happen this year but dont forget he is only 21, about to be 22, so there is still plenty of room for growth. i see him as a 40 goal scorer for a number of years. not saying to go get him or any of that.

so our RWs would be gabby, heater or kessel(hes no C), kotalik and callahan. who’s playing on the 4th line, cally? we allready have a premier RW, u dont need 2 and i think kessel #s were inflated last year due to being priviledged enough to play on savards line. also taking on either of their contracts would make us unable to sign some of guys in the next few years. u want to bring in big contracts without any of the repercussions go root for the jankees

never happen!
How can anyone even think that a Dubi-Kessel trade can be made?
1.Kessel looking for about 5.2mil—-we really dont even have that kinda cap space ,cause that would be so close to, if not totally tapping us out.
2.listen i love Dubi,but for Kessel c’mon thats a no brainer(apples and oranges)
Dont know what the problem is but, this is looking like it"s gonna get real UGLY!

ok lets fix that !
The rangers have $1.9mil total cap space,so tell me how we could even think kessel could be involved in any trade for Dubi, unless it’s a block buster getting rid of Redden?

i guess this is an update that Brooks is reporting that Sather has offered Dubi a one year deal with a salary increase over the $635,000 that he made last season.

Sather
has done a lot of good things of late for this team, but i feel most of the moves were tortorellas influence not a purely sather decision… sather is a bum… as long as he is our GM we will constantly be stuck against the cap and suffering from inflated contracts…

JUST SIGN ALREADY
You know what…650,000.00 to play hockey is pretty damn good…..I’m tired of everyone saying we cant go on with this guy……just sign the damn contract and play hard for one year….you had 13 goal for christ sake !!! Dubinsky is an important part of this team though
so I don’t think it is as simple as you make it out to be. I would be pissed if I played as well as he did and only got a qualifying offer.

He really didn't play that well.
Thats the thing. Other teams fans are probably so confused wondering what all the fuss about a 3rd line center is. That is all Dubi is right now. We can speculate until forever about his potential and what he may turn out to be, but right now he hasn’t done anything. He was a solid defense d’man last year, and nothing else. If anything his disaapearing act hurt the team more through the course of a season then helped it. This guy is a goddamn 3rd line center. Tell me what exactly he did so great last year? He killed some penalties, improved on faceoffs? Great, how much is that worth exactly, especially when the Rangers have all the leverage here. Either take your 600 or get the fuck out.

Good points
I can say you do make some good points,at this point in Dubi’s career he’s not proved to be a first line center points wise. But with that said he has proved he can play pretty damm good with some of the best, to be jagr’s centermen is no easy task. For the rest of the speculation part he reminds many of us of a young MESSIER,strong in your face leader. But bottom line is there is NO REASON not to have signed him already.
