Rangers News: Tortorella upset by Dubinsky's absence from camp (UPDATE: Heatley Traded to San Jose)

Well things are going from bad to worse, and fast. Yesterday John Tortorella said that he would "not hold any grudges" while Dubinsky and his agent worked out a new contract with the New York Rangers. Well that lasted all of about 10 hours. Andrew Gross from Rangers Rants is reporting that John Tortorella is upset with Dubinsky's absence from camp. Here are some highlights:

John Tortorella understands that business is business but he's having a hard time understanding why unsigned restricted free agent Brandon Dubinsky was not at the Madison Square Garden Training Center today for the start of training camp.

"It's stupid," Tortorella said. "I'm not going to put myself in the negotiations but it's stupid. He's a young man and he needs to be in camp. I'm not sure where the thinking is coming from."

Andrew Gross continues his story with this:

Obviously, though, Tortorella believes Dubinsky is taking advice from his agent, Kurt Overhardt, who has been in town negotiating with Rangers assistant GM Cam Hope.

"I think his agent is stupid," Tortorella said. "I hope he realizes he has teammates here, too."

Tortorella said he thought Glen Sather had given Dubinsky some good advice during a sitdown meeting the other day.

"I think Dubi understands my feelings and how Glen feels about it," Tortorella said. "Glen was honest with him, as a general manager, man-to-man and as a friend. I think it's terrific what he did with the kid. It's not my decision, so we move on."

I have to be completely honest I am starting to agree with the Rangers here--at least with Tortorella. Dubinsky is not helping himself by missing the training camp. Forget the obvious conditioning he is missing but think about this team. There are four new members to the team that Dubinsky very well may find himself playing with; Gaborik, Kotalik, Prospal and Higgins. Missing an extended period of camp would be missing valuable time to get to know you're new teammatesand line-mates. Dubinsky can take the one year 550K deal and wait for arbitration next off-season to get his raise. No it's not fair but guess what? Hockey is a business and this is life.

Jim and I have come to an agreement that Dubinskyis probably on the trading block. I think that his absence from camp is just another sign that his days as a Ranger are numbered. Word is that the Rangers are kicking the tires on Heatley and Kessel--although I would have to say that a Heatley deal would be difficult with the cap situation. Then again things wont be much cheaper with Kessel.

So what do you all think?

Update by Joe Fortunato: Cross Heatley off the list, the winger is off to San Jose as per TSN. Rangers options are getting thinner.

Thank God

The Heatley saga is over at least.

Now on to the saga that actually affects the Rangers.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

is that dubinsky or the new drama that keeps being repeated in kessel?

torts is right about dubi even though i think sather is taking the wrong approach in trying to squeeze him to make up for his overspending on others, but dubi has stated how much he wants to be there so take what you can get, get in and earn the raise you think you should get with your play on the ice and in all likelihood sather will end up paying more later than he should have.

half dozen of the other.

I’ve felt for a while that the Kessel rumors were a lot stronger than Heatley. It’s pretty obvious that LW/C is a bigger issue than RW and thus Kessel makes a lot of sense.

To me I don’t care much either way…get a center and get him signed at this point. Both are young players who should flourish on a 1st line with Prospal and Gaborik, just get somebody.

Though Dubinsky’s PK duties make him slightly more valuable than Kessel, at least as the team is currently constructed.

To clarify my last statement

I’m not saying Dubi is worth Kessel money (obviously), just that his price tag/responsibilites is a better fit.

isnt kessel a RW also?

and he isnt really a C although they like to list him as one

by Conway on Sep 12, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought he was a LW/C

Knew he played a wing also. He’s mostly listed as a center though.

Doesn’t look like he’s on his way either though, so really doesn’t matter I suppose.

lets say dubs gets signed mid-week

would he be able to join them in camp? i have to agree with torts that its very stupid bc if he really wants to be here than he could be. sometimes u have to take matter into your own hands and not listen to your agent. u know his agent is telling him what to do and dubi is just listening to his advice. also it makes dubs seem like a problem child, which he really isnt. he has no leverage in this situation, sather does, so sather basically gets to call the shots. u have to love how torts just calls it like it is. his agent i stupid

he can join camp now

he just needs an invitation (which i am aure the Rangers gave him)

by Conway on Sep 12, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

its an assumption on my part

but i cant imagine the Rangers wouldnt let him work out with the team. unless they are trying to trade him, then they wouldnt give him an invite. so i dont know

If Torterella is complaining about Dubinsky missing camp I think its more than an assumption that he got an invitation. Sure he’s not under a contract yet, but with all of the previous news and optimism about being a Ranger soon; He had to of gotten an invitation.

that was my assumption

Kessel

There is not enough money – cap wise to fit him into any part of the NYR squad. Especially a player who feels that they are above the team. Here is a kid who has yet to have enough experience to even understand that it was alot more than his skills that produced those goals last year. He has yet to understand that by himself he is not as good as last years production and that he needs such players as Savard to be productive. We have no 1st line center to feed him. Just a waste of money.

Dubi to join camp?

Not being part of the NYR organization- he has no insurance benefits and coverages. He would have to supply his own insurance in case of injury. One of the main reasons why he probably has not shown. Plus doesn’t their pay begin 10/1?

by Rick 4 NYR on Sep 13, 2009 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

not sure

not sure.. but this has really gone to a different level now.. i mean really.. camp has started..

preseason starts in 2 days… jujst sign the kid already.. 40 points.. top 10 in the leagu e in hits.. can play the PK or PP

just give the kid 2 mil for 1-2 years.. its a fair amount and we can afford it..

and if dubinsky and his agent t dont agree on the 2 mil at this point.. their nuts and obviously he doesnt want to be here.. when tanguay signs for 2.5 a few weeks before you, your not getting more than that..

for god sakes sather/agent.. just get a deal done.. i know you have all the negotiating rights sather, but is that extra 1 mil your saving this year worth loosing a franchise player who could be a future captain? i dont think so…

Yeah, are any of you thinking this is on the Rangers more than on Dubinsky? If the reports of what the Rangers are offering are true, it sounds like this isn’t your typical greedy holdout.

If the “carrot” is a pay cut and essentially league-minimum salary for a player who is probably worth more than that, I’m not sure showing up to camp and risking injury at that (non)pay level is the smart risk for him.

That said, as an Isles fan I’d be happy if he missed all of camp. :P

reports are that the Rangers upped their offer to over 700K

and ya know what Dubinsky still could have accepted the offer to training camp
