Rangers Recaps: Devils 3 Rangers 2 (OT)

Matt Gilroy and Matt Maccastache

I wasn't able to catch most of the game last night, and there was no recap in the Inbox from the Rangers, so I'm just going to give you a few quick notes on the game, and there is a link to the TSN recap at the bottom of this story:

From Steve Zipay at Newsday: (click link for full story)

Vinny Prospal drew praise from coach John Tortorella for his playmaking at center in the 3-2 OT loss to the Devils. Prospal told me he feels lighter and quciker, having lost 15 pounds since last season, which was a disappointing one for him, with 19 goals and 26 assists. He looks ready for a far better one.

Torts said that D Corey Potter was one player who would survive the cuts tomorrow afternoon that will bring the number of players in camp to 29 or 30. We know that Bobby Sanguinetti will also, as will Matt Gilroy (sweet breakaway move to score on a backhander in regulation and then five-hole in the shootout) and Mike Del Zotto, which doesn't bode well for many other defensemen.

From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants: (click link for full story)

Phoenix pick-up (for Lauri Korpikoski) Enver Lisin is an intriguing player. He's perhaps as fast as any player in the NHL yet he went through an inconsistent season with the Coyotes, with 13 goals and 8 assists in 41 games. If he ever harnassed his talent, he could be a good fit for John Tortorella's go-go-go system.

Against the Devils, Lisin had three shots in 20:08, not to mention a potential first-period goal or assist wiped off by Sean Avery's goalie interference on Yann Danis ("It is what it is, the ref said it was no goal," Lisin said.)

Cuts should be this afternoon, we'll bring them to you as soon as we have them.

I’ve very much liked what I’ve seen so far of Lisin – if he continues to play the way he has, he’s going to make the fight for the last couple of roster spots very interesting. As I said on Banter Radio last night – I wasn’t expecting the ‘grit’ that he’s shown – digging in the corners and along the boards and taking the body. And it appears that those who really count (mgm’t and coach) have noticed as well (plus all the things we don’t get to see in the practice/scrimmage sessions).

Dubinsky better sign today – if Prospal keeps showing a pretty seamless transition back to being a center – Dubi’s chances of centering for Gaborik are going to disappear….

I’m excited too – even if I’ve been dubbed ‘the voice of reason’.. ;)
This will be a fun team to watch – the action will be a roller-coaster ride non-stop.

What makes me somewhat, dare I say, delirious – is what this team could look like in about 3 years – with Grachev, Stepan, McDonagh, Werek, Horak, DelZotto, Bourque, Kreider….alongside the likes of Gaborik, Staal, Callahan, Girardi, Gilroy…. talk about team speed ! Wow.

agreed regardless of who makes the team this offseason gives ranger fans all kinds of excitement… Probably only the 2nd time in my 21 years that there is true excitement for the new york rangers, and the other time was 94, even though it was gut wrenching until the end.

man gilroy really put on a show last night. i like the agressiveness but id hate to be his partner on D. if hekeeps this up there would be no way to keep him off the roster. our future is sick, seems like we are adapting quite nicely to this ‘new nhl’ with all of this speed and talent.

is it just me or does lisin seem like prucha part 2. i cant help but think that everytime i see him out there. hopefully he pans out. hes got guts, obvious speed and nice hands from what ive seen so far

I think he’s faster than Prucha – but the comparison is valid.
Imagine if Prucha were still here under Tortorella ? Might have ended up differently…..

Water under the bridge – but if anyone can coach Lisin to his potential, I’d say Torts might be the guy….

did...

anyone else notice that Redden looked OK last night? While Rozi seemed to play poorly?
Redden had a of couple nice shots. On thing that stood out with Rozi was when he almost turned it over in front of the net which could very well have led to a goal.

Any thoughts on those guys?

Rozsival had a very up and down game. I thought I saw some good plays, though others disagree, and Redden looked in good shape.

Redden was the Rangers’ best defenseman in the playoffs last year. And he is coming off a season in which he played increasingly better in the last couple of games. it looked like it carried over yesterday.

Agree with @rmc235 in all respects re: Redden

I’d guess that Roszival might have gotten an earful from Torts either after the game or today. But it’s his first preseason action – nothing to be concerned with yet. At times it seemed like he was falling back into the “Renney” system out of habit – then realized that wasn’t what he was supposed to do.

Rozsival looked really bad to me. Had a few ok plays, but to many mistakes. Redden looked alright. I’m hoping he’ll come through this year.

Redden is more suited to Torts style of play-has the offensive thrust that Torts is looking for.Rozi has never had that type of game. He will hang near the blue line for 95% of the time and rarely will he venture down low. He has the skills to handle that type of aggression but his head just doesn’t go there.
