Rangers Recap: Rangers fall to Detroit 4-3

Tonight was a rough night for the Rangers as they saw themselves forfeit a 2-0 lead and give up 4 goals in the third period.

[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 09/19/09 11:22 AM EDT Here is the NHL Game Summary]

Rangers vs Red Wings boxscore
Winging It In Motown

Let's look at the good:

  • Henrik Lundqvist: was, well, Henrik Lundqvist. Very good in his stint shutting out the Wings during his half of the game.
  • Artem Anisimov: Wow he really showed me what he can do today. His goal was simply the result of a smart and talented player. Put him down in the "already made the team and is just showing off" category. He also had an assist on Lisin's goal.
  • Enver Lisin: Scored a goal and looked very quick on his feet. He took good shots and worked well in the corners. I think he is making a really big statement that he belongs on this team.
  • Brashear-Boyle-Voros: I can't believe I am saying this but Voros looked really good. This line was the single best forechecking line on the day and they had some great shots. They were impressive.
  • Ryan Callahan: Scored the final goal of the game on a georgious move around the goalie. He played pretty well up to that point but that goal was enough to put him in the good category.
  • Grachev: I really liked what I saw from him these past three games. He recorded an assist on the Lisin goal but he was great in the corners and he worked really well in the offensive zone. He takes shots when he has the lane and that is all we as Ranger fans can ask from him.

Star-divide

Now let's do the neutral:

  • Chris Drury and Chris Higgins: Both were relatively invisible the entire game. But I guess they didn't do anything badly so they get put here in no mans land.
  • Illka Heikkinen: Looked good at times and hesitant at others. You can chalk tonight up to nerves since it was his first taste of the NHL but he needs to step it up if he plays tomorrow.
  • Matt Zaba: Yeah yeah four goals in the third blah blah. You can only really blame him for the second goal. The first and second were perfect shots and the fourth was a great tip. He played pretty well when the defense didn't abandon him.
  • Alexei Semenov and Bobby Sanguinetti: Both of them looked pretty good in their own rights. Sanguinetti looked good in the defensive zone and hesitant in the offensive zone. Sememov looked better in the offensive zone honestly but he did play out some great hits.
  • Wade Redden: He wasn't bad defensively but he certainly wasn't good. he made a nice pass on the Anisimov goal and looked pretty good in the offensive zone. Nothing too special though.

The bad:

  • The 3rd period: You all know that Tortorella stresses the third period but the Rangers weren't listening tonight. They played awful and abandoned Zaba at basically every turn. They need to bounce back from this.
  • The power play: Nothing special here. Same old same old but don't forget the power play tonight was without Gaborik, Kotalik, Prospal and Gilroy.
  • The penalty kill: It looked good at times and bad at others. I'll throw it in the bad category because it was not up to the 1st in the NHL standard they set last year.

The awful:

  • Rozsival: Words cannot express how poorly he preformed tonight. It seemed like he was on the ice for every goal and out of position everywhere he went. Me and Jim both expressed him having a better season once fully healed. Well he did not show it tonight.
  • Brandon Dubinsky: The more he misses camp and pre-season the more the prospects are showing that they can take his place. Ansimov, Grachev and Crowder looked good today and all viable options to take his place. Who says the Rangers are worse off now?

now.. if dubi comes we have our roster set.. if not.. who makes the team.. lisin or grachev?

Damn

Internet cut off over here so I couldn’t read the box score. Do you think the Russian line of Grachev-Anisomov-Lisin make the team for good? Sangs and Hein didn’t really shine? How do you think the Defensive pairing will look like since Redden and Roz pretty muched let the Redwings score on Zaba? Think Torts will do something about them?

by Poe678 on Sep 18, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

ok Poe but only because you are in the armed forces :-)

The Russian line looked awesome. Aside from Grachev the other two are locks. Grachev should make the team imo.

Sangs and Heikkinen didnt shine but they didnt look awful

Redden and Rozsival scare me so the defense scares me.

Torts will do whatever he has to do to fix the problem. He doesnt care who you are you have to earn you’re time

Sanguinetti made some excellent defensive plays – and was quick to step up to challenge the puck carrier.
If you’re rating the 6 dmen tonight, it would have be (my take)
1 Sanguinetti
2 Potter
3 Heikkinen
4 Semenov
5 Redden (would be higher – but he was MINUS 4)
6 Rozsival

i wish we could just send both of them down to hartford.. and if someone picks them up on the way down.. YEAH!

i know we cant go with 4 rookies.. but seriously, can they be any worse than R and R?

staal girardi gilroy potter semenov hikkanen del zotto sanguineti

hows that sounds?

5 rookies out of 7.

I’m now convinced you’ve lost your mind. ;-)

Sather will trade for NHL experience before that would EVER happen.

by dbmaven on Sep 18, 2009 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

Well

He should try trading Rozi first then and since he has issues with Dubinsky … send him off too.

by Poe678 on Sep 18, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

haha

i was joking.. kinda funny to think off..

i wish we could send them down.. than just pick up 2 solid vets for cheaper than a combined 11.5 mil!!!

by Moshe52792 on Sep 18, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

trade dubi for babchuk? that would give us another vet to drop rozi.

by Michael Gleich on Sep 18, 2009 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

i said this a couple times during the game but it is really happening because of the way lisin and grachev have played. we have 7 wingers for 6 spots on the top 3 lines.

Avery – Prospal – Gaborik
Higgins – Drury – Kotalik (rather have cally here, but we will see)
that leaves Grachev, Cally and Lisin to play with Artem. so either Grachev doesnt make the club or Lisin who has shown himself quite well in the 3 games is a 4th liner.

by Michael Gleich on Sep 18, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah – they’ve got some tough decisions to make.

by dbmaven on Sep 18, 2009 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions

What I posted in the other thread -

Not that I’d roll these lines – but these would be my 12 + 1 on offense
Avery Prospal Gaborik : Higgins Drury Kotalik : Grachev Anisimov Callahan
Brashear Boyle Parenteau + Lisin

And I’d add Voros to the + list (healthy scratch) if he can play the way he did tonight consistently

by dbmaven on Sep 18, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

well they cant dress 13 forwards. i assume brashear, boyle, lisin will be the 4th line but if torts plays the 4th line as little as he is said to that is sort of wasting what lisin has shown us. what i could see is if avery gets in the doghouse for penalties he would drop down and other would shift around.

How about a deal like this....

Ive read several reports that the blues are considering Brad Boyes for possibly Jordan Staal. Why no beat Pittsburgh to the punch and package Duby and Rozsival for Brad Boyes and Carlo Colaiacovo. This deal works. Boyes makes 1.6 million and Colaiacovo makes a little over 1 million. Plud John Davidson loves Duby and has always had a special thing for Rozsivals shot. I like this deal alot and hey who know. Im just speculating and dreaming about a 33 goal 40 assist guy playig with Prospal or Cally……WOW!!!!!!

by RangerFan5 on Sep 18, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

Correction

My fault… Boyes signed an extension and is currently making 2.5 million this seaon.

by RangerFan5 on Sep 18, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

are u sure ur not wrong again and confusing him with backes when you say 2.5 mil since boyes is making 5, 4.5, and 4 mil the next 3 years w 4 mil cap hit.

now that said i wouldnt mind making ur deal for backes who is 25 and scored 31G 23A last year and is signed for 2 more years (this and next) at 2.5 mil.

though we are talking about having “too many” forwards already so trading for more isnt necessarily a need.

by Michael Gleich on Sep 18, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

if we are going to talk about dubi deals we have to mention our favorite trading partner in phx since maloney loves to trade for guys he drafted so let me throw out the pipe dream of dealing dubi for a player like turris.

by Michael Gleich on Sep 18, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

Decisions Decisions

It’s weird to say but it looks like the team has too many forwards.

Even then you still have the 10 forwards for 9 spots (ignoring the 4th line for now) problem, where it’s tough to keep the Russian line separated, but that would leave Callahan the odd man out.

So perhaps the solution will be that Tortorella has to roll 4 lines and he drops Avery with Brashear and Boyle, moves HIggins up to play with Gaborik and then moves Kotalik to LW to play with Drury-Callahan?

Either that or we’re going to have to wait a year for the Russian line, and they would not re-sign Higgins and/or Prospal.

At least it’s a good problem to have.

Red Wing game

I disagree on some of your thoughts. Zaba was awful. No problem if you consider going down too early making goals not his fault. I think only one was not stoppable, and one was horrible. Higgins played reasonably well, taking the body. The only positive thing yu could say about Redden is that he was not as bad as Roszival.

Red Wing game

We both forgot about Parenteau who played another strong game.

by RealRangerFan on Sep 19, 2009 9:19 AM EDT reply actions

Personally i prefer to see DZ and Gilroy out there than Heik or Sangz… We have two more than solid Dmen in Girardi and Staal and the RR pair is here like it or not… I’d like to see DZ and Gilroy with Semenov as our 7th dman… i know i’m going to take a hit for this, but DZ is younger and less experienced that Sangz or Heik and he showed he wants it… plus he can skate and pass… i honestly think these games are courtesy games for sangs and heik since they haven’t played yet, we just didn’t look as solid defensively without gilroy and DZ…

Something else to look at is how the young guys fall into the Good, while the vets are falling into the mediocre to the bad… interesting, i’m seriously contemplating the idea of a vet dman, i don’t know if they’d be able to handle this style…

by Tophubufu on Sep 19, 2009 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

like someone said before, havingtoo many forwards is a good problem to have.

think of it this way. maybe this year lisin and grachev dont play. than next year we keep the russian line together and dont resign higgins and prospal.

by dubinsky not playing we have seen we have guys who can easily take his spot. if he wants a spot here he better get his ass to camp. the 1.85 mil for 2 years is a good deal.

if not, just trade him and rozi for a solid dman..
