POST-GAME QUOTES
John Tortorella on tonight's game...
"I thought we played a really good first period and probably played one of our worst periods in the second, but we found a way to win. Third period I thought we grinded it pretty well but still struggled with turnovers. They had more NHL players in there. It was good for our guys to play against (them)."
John Tortorella on Marian Gaborik...
"I thought he did some good things. Obviously, you can see his talent. He did some things in our end zone; he did some lousy things in our end zone; he did some good things in some other areas. I think he is going to add a dimension to our team that I think you need and that is his creativity and the dynamic player that he is. I am sure it is hard for him. I haven't talked to him at all about playing today or even after the game. I am sure it is hard for him, he wants to be healthy. I thought he gave us some good minutes. He did a good job killing penalties."
Marian Gaborik on tonight's game...
"I felt pretty good out there for the first game. I felt nervous at the start but it felt pretty good. It was a win for us. Hopefully, it is going to get better and better."
Henrik Lundqvist on tonight's game...
"We were playing well in the first period. It feels good to just be out there and get the game feeling. It is just about being out there and getting the feel for it. We are getting closer, it is exciting."

News all good
Avery’s news is good.
IMO, MDZ has really improved his performance since his first game. Even still, I’ll be surprised if they keep him in the big leagues. I think he’s going back to Juniors for one more season. Grachev & Gilroy continue to impress. Prospal looks like the steal of the off-season.
Overall, the kids look strong. I’m starting to lose my concern over the lack of D.

I know he only scored a empty net goal...
but after replaying that goal against Boston, Animisov to me must make the final roster.
This guy is BIG and fast. Would love to see what he can do for the Rangers this year (and salivate about the future when him and Grachev play on the same line….)

I think Anisimov is pretty much a lock at this point, it would be very hard to justify sending him back to Hartford, what is left to prove there?

the big questions now are Del Zotto and Grachev

Anisimov has to be a lock. I would like to see MDZ stay up. Yeah he needs to learn alot but what better way.
I know he can’t go to Hartford because of his age, but my question is….
Is it true that if he stays up for 10 days then he can go to Hartford?
I’m hoping Grachev stays up to… send down Rozy!

He can stay at the NHL level for up to 10 games, but still can’t go to Hartford – he would be returned to London of the OHL.

Which at this point whould be usless for his development
at least if Grachev got sent down he could play in the AHL

As you already know – I adamantly disagree that another season in London would be “useless for his development”.
He has natural instincts on the offensive side of the game – what he doesn’t have are natural instincts on defense. He takes himself out of plays, gets caught out of position, and then doesn’t know where to go to get back in the play. Not all the time – but often enough. A year in London, working hard on those aspects, will turn him into a much better 2-way defenseman – by that time he would look an awful lot like Gilroy (whose instincts seem to go both ways). It would also give him a year to fill out/bulk up/strengthen the upper body – as he is now – he’ll get eaten alive by the NHL power forwards.
It worked for Marc Staal – there’s no reason to expect that it wouldn’t work for DZ.

Usless was a poor word
but there is no question that the NHL would be better than the OHL. He has looked great on the ice so far, and against a basically NHL team yesterday so we will see.

I see DBMaven’s point…. he is probably right. The kid is young and can learn alot.
I think the Rangers are a much better team with him. I think he’ll develop just fine in the NHL.
This is an interesting team to watch!

MDZ still a question?
Who is the 6th defenseman if not MDZ? Semenov? Sanguinetti? Ick.
I know there will be some growing pains with him (see the turnover against the redwings that led to the first goal), but the kid has talent and he looks so fluid running the point on the PP…I don’t see how he’s not the best option for that slot.
Grachev on the other hand looks like the odd man out unless they follow my insane plan of getting rid of/scratching Brashear and Voros and rolling the Russians out as a 4th line.
Boy is he making a case though.

According to Andrew Gross tweets Torts basically said cuts to 23 today i believe so i would guess PA and Sangs would be the two with Grachev being the last cut if he gets cut.
Also Dubi back at center in practice today with Cally and Higgins.

Well Grachev could see nine games in Avery’s stead and then be moved down unless he has 12 points and then hes not going anywhere, that would be my guess.

the same does not apply as they dont appear to be sending him back to juniors as del zotto would be. avery isnt going to be out for 4 weeks.

i agree that optimally mdz should get another year to develop, but at this point even with his defensive lapses he is the best fit for our current roster and in my eyes he won the spot over sangs and semenov. torts said he was goin to play whoever played the best and thats been mdz. at the very least they should(probably will) give him the 10 day tryout
as for grachev, its sad to see him go down bc hes earned a spot, but theres only so many to go around and hes not gonna waste away on the 4th line. lisin, at this point has earned a spot and might waste away on the 4th line and possibly some PP duties. its nice to know we have guys like these waiting in the wings(literally)
