Rangers News: Bobby Sanguinetti Assigned to Hartford

I think most of us knew this was coming, but since he is a Blueshirt Banter favorite, it's still a downer:

New York, September 24, 2009 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has assigned defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey  League (AHL).  The Rangers now have 23 players remaining in training camp, including two goaltenders, seven defensemen and 14 forwards.  The Blueshirts' return to action tonight when they will host the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden (7:00 p.m.), in the final home game of their 2009-10 pre-season schedule.

Bobby Sanguinetti

#54 / Defenseman / New York Rangers

6-3

190

Feb 29, 1988

PLAYERS ASSIGNED TO HARTFORD (AHL) ON 9/24/09:
Defense:           Bobby Sanguinetti

PLAYERS STILL IN NEW YORK RANGERS TRAINING CAMP:

Goal:                 Henrik Lundqvist, Steve Valiquette
Defense:           Michael Del Zotto, Matt Gilroy, Dan Girardi, Wade Redden, Michal Rozsival, Alexei Semenov, Marc Staal
Forwards:         Artem Anisimov, Sean Avery, Brian Boyle, Donald Brashear, Ryan Callahan, Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky, Marian Gaborik, Evgeny Grachev, Christopher Higgins, Ales Kotalik, Enver Lisin, Vinny Prospal, Aaron Voros

This leaves the Rangers with 7 defensemen in camp, so unless something changes, it looks as though Gilroy, Del Zotto and Semenov have made the team.

Focus shifts to the Offense

Grachev has 2 games to show that he belongs and Anisimov has 2 games to give the Rangers an excuse to send him to Hartford. Should be interesting.

It’ll be Grachev. Isn’t there some sort of rule that if Anisimov doesn’t make the roster that he has to go back to juniors for one year?

by DJ Wuss on Sep 24, 2009 1:26 PM EDT reply actions

No, Anisimov and Grachev would go to Hartford if they were sent down

MDZ

You’re thinking of Del Zotto… if he doesn’t make the team since he’s young he’ll have to go back to the OHL.

by fromthe51hate on Sep 24, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

yea must be MDZ ur thinking of since Artie was already in Hartford last year.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Grachev has to get sent down

First off as it looks I’m excited To see del zotto make the team but I have no idea what they are doing with grachev. I mean I like himjust as much as the next blueshirt fan but there is no room for him with anisimov playing as well as he did in his preseason. I just hope he doesnt get put on the 4th line but i think lisin will get that spot although he can proably play with any line if he learns how to finish better

Grach

They’ll send him down to Hartford…I bet they are just seeing how he’ll do with these games to give him the ice time… He’ll go down to the AHL and having had a taste of the NHL…he’ll want to be back quick so he’ll destroy.

Higgins – Prospal -Gaborik
Drury – Dubi – Kotalik
Avery – Artem – Cally
Brashear – Boyle – Lisin

Staal – Gilroy
MDZ – Girardi
R&R

any chance we go with this?

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

Looks very likely to me

Semenov and Voros as healthy scratches.

by Lunkwill Fook on Sep 24, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Voros

He’ll probably get swapped in and out to spell guys, but otherwise that looks about right.

To take it a step further, how does this look?

PP1: Lisin-Prospal-Gaborik-Kotalik-MDZ
PP2: Higgins-Drury-Callahan-Redden-Rozsival
PP extras: AA, Avery and Gilroy

PK1: Higgins-Dubinsky-Staal-Gilroy
PK2: Drury-Callahan-Redden-Girardi
PK extras: Gaborik, Boyle, Rozsival.

Lisin on the PP? No thanks…

by Rob Luker on Sep 24, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

i think Gilroy over rozi is likely on pp2. i would like to split ur pairs and go with dubi cally, drury higgins on pk and gaborik intrigues me because of the threat the other way.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I went Drury-Cally since they played a bunch together last year, that’s basically the only reasoning.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

and i went how i did because i expect both of my forward pairs to play together at even strength as well.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

but that depends on where they put dubi.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd like to see

Avery-Dubi-Gaborik
Prospal-Drury-Kotalik
Higgins-Anisimov-Cally

I’d like Avery up front to draw some attention off of Gaborik, not to mention he is a much more skilled player then he gets credit for around the league. I like Drury with Kotalik and Prospal on the wing, though honestly I wouldn’t mind seeing Higgins or Cally there instead. Same with 3rd line, I think it is as good as the second line, Cally and Higgins seem like a good wing combo because they play a similar grinding style that will complement Artem. They don’t mind doing the hard work and they will get into the corners and create chances for Anisimov to finish. I really don’t think that the talent level of these lines is all that different, outside of having Gaborik make the first line the most talented. I don’t think whoever ends up on the third line should be upset about it because they are going to get a lot of burn.

Ironic

you say R&R line, if they continue the way they played so far this preseason it pretty much is r & r for any line going up against them.

by John Mjr on Sep 24, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

No surprise

Sanguinetti will make the team next year if/when R&R are gone, seems like a guarantee given he’s the last D-man cut, unless of course he regresses or Heikkenen passes him.

The last spot looks to be between Voros and Grachev, and since it’s a 4th line, limited minutes time, it’s pretty much a lock that Grachev is the odd man out. Again no surprise.

there is also nigel williams down there who we just picked up, pashnin and valtenko in russia, and kundratek who im not sure where he is going since he threatened to leave if they send him to juniors.

our offense is pretty good now too since we have grachev and stepan probably ready next year…werek, bourque a year later.

So promising

And yet with Sather…there’s always the threat they never see time because he’s busy throwing $8M at Savard next year or something.

That’s alot of good lookin’ prospects though. I’d love to see a Rangers team with nothing but homegrowns in 2011-2012.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Sep 24, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

well technically signing savard wouldnt kill the homegrown thing since he was one of ours way back. the rangers on have 6.452 mil coming off the books as of now next year in the contracts of Staal, Girardi, Higgins, Prospal and Vally. Vally is replaced by Johnson at approx the same cap him. so basically 5.7 mil to sign Staal and Girardi and probably replace Prospal (Stepan?) and Higgins (Grachev)

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Well my point is that you fear Sather replacing Higgins and Prospal with veterans, then unloading Rozsival and Redden and signing veteran d-men.

I just hope he’s finally getting smart and will leave the room for the kids first and plug the holes with cheap veterans later. More Prospal signings, less Kotalik signings as it were.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Sep 24, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

i think the way our kids performed in camp will have a lot to do with it. the fact they have shown they are ready and that our system is good will hopefully make sather less trigger happy in free agency. then again that will be proven out over the year based on how well they play up here.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

if anything

i think wed resign lisin and bring up grachev..

and anyway u look at it..

5.7 mil isnt enough for staal and girardi.. along with 2 extra players…

we really need to shed the contract or redden/rozi.. so we can resign staal/girardi

Unless

They’re not planning on re-signing Girardi.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

which would be..

a very dumb move…

if the plan is to keep r and r.. but not resign girardi… i dont wanna watch anymore..

they could always leave redden/rozi in hartford next year..

like im saying worse comes to worse.. they play terrible.. like god awful.. no one will take them. so they go through waivers and are assigned to hartford.. then well have plenty of cap space.. even if just rozi is assigned..

prospal and higgins are replaced by lisin and grachev..

with the extra money from getting rid of redden/rozi we resign staal/girardi..

and than we can either bring in a dman or a forward, depending on whos avilable..

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

by Moshe52792 on Sep 24, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

No no no...

Still get rid of Redden and Rozsival. But just that with the depth of prospects maybe they decide Girardi is expendable.

Play next year with:

Staal-Gilroy
MDZ- cheap veteran D-man
Sanguinetti-McDonagh

or something along those lines. That’s what I’m implying.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Sep 24, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

if gilroy and mdz prove they are ready it is possible that girardi is more expendable depending on the money he wants too.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I recall someone who knew something bout McDonaugh not being ready for maybe 2 to 3 more years. Not too sure though.

by John Mjr on Sep 24, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

The decision is largely his – it depends on whether he wants to get his degree or not. Most scouts expect him to jump to the pros next year.

But on Hockey’s Future – he is the #3 overall prospect right now – he jumped over both Sangs and MDZ in their rankings.
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/teams/new_york_rangers

Considering that they had MDZ rated higher than Sangs, then he’s liable to be as, if not more, ready than Del Zotto is right now.

R&R

If they can go thru waivers and not count against the cap why can’t we send one of them down this year? Still trying to figure out the whole cap thing.

by ae2cdk on Sep 24, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Waivers kick in 12 days before the start of the regular season – which was earlier this week. That’s why Parenteau had to clear waivers when sent to Hartford.

It’s not likely that either of them would be claimed going down.
But if you recall one of them (because someone is injured), then they have to pass through re-entry waivers. At that point, another club can claim them, stiff the Rangers with paying 1/2 their salary and get away cheap (what happened with Sean Avery).

by dbmaven on Sep 24, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

AH

Thanks. I just keep trying to come up with a way to get rid of them. LOL

chandler knight

by ae2cdk on Sep 24, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, because they’re not going to give up on Redden after one season, and he did play decent last year under Tortorella. Not $6.5m decent, but he was fine.

Rozsival is another story..but he was hurt last year so they’re likely just giving him another chance.

Plus there was no way the team was going into this season with Staal-Girardi and 4 rookies on defense.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Sep 24, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

it is much more likely they would go that route next year with one or both especially since there is no real point in the cap savings right now.

My take on this

I know that we’ve talked to some people over the last few days that think the best thing for all these guys is for them to go down and learn how to be a pro, gain experience, etc, but quite frankly, I’m tired of seeing veteran players weighed down by their wallets.

If the Rangers are going to flop this year, wouldn’t you rather they do it with some young players, instead of a bunch of aging overpaid underperforming veterans?

the problem is those who most qualify are on D where the surplus is on O…if redden and rozy were wingers standing in the way of grachev then sure, but name a top 9 player ur going to drop and we can talk.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

or tell me torts is going to roll 4 lines pretty evenly and only shaft the lower lines for specialty minutes and then we play a young line like the russians together as a 4th, drop boyle down and keep voros for dubi’s wing and brashear instead when we need the goon element.

Roll 4 lines:

If the choices were between a youngster and a ‘vet’ – yes.

But in this case it’s effectively between 2 rookies.

One a 21 year old who’s played at the pro (AHL) level for a full year.
The other a 19 year old fresh out of juniors.

Ultimately it’s Tortorella and Sather (with whomever else might be involved) making the decisions.

And only time will tell if they’re right or not.

What are Del Zoto' options?

Isn’t there some rule where del Zoto can make the big club and they have a number of games he can play and then be sent back to Jr’s?

by SISHAMROCK on Sep 24, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

9 games he can be here.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Just one question, why did you use that picture of Dubinsky from like 3 years ago for this story?
My thinking is the Rangers keep Delzotto on the team until game 9 or whenever the deadline to send him back to juniors is, and they likely send him there and call up Sanguinetti to split time with Semenov provided he plays well in Hartford. It will give MDZ some good experience at the pro level and allow Sanguinetti a little extra seasoning before he plays for the Rangers consistently.

hmm

we all saw this coming.. del zotto outplayed him and the spot was between those two..

now technically we can have 23 players, but no point of keeping grachev if hes going to ger 4th line duties, which he would because no one else in our top 9 is going to be put on the 4th line..

i would let him play 20-25 mins a night in hartford to really complete his game.. than next year hell def. be on the team.. plus, hell be on the shortlist to be called up if anything happens..

lisin is the extra man which is good to have. he can play anywhere… substituted on the 4th line for brash or voros.. he can be put anywhere in the top 9 if someone cant play or is struggling..

now lets make a post about lineups.. ive said before.. i think this is a fair enough base..

prospal – dubinsky/anisimov – gaborik
higgins/avery – drury – kotalik
higgins/avery – dubinsky/anisimov – callahan
brashear/lisin – boyle – voros/lisin

staal – gilroy
girardi – mdz
redden – roszival (5 mins a game)
semenov

gotta let the rooks play with staal or girardi since their both offensive and they need that solid dman paired with them

MDZ-Girardi
Redden-Rozsival

those are the pairings I’d like to see tonight.

From Zipay:

Evgeny Grachev-Chris Drury- Ales Kotalik
Enver Lisin-Brandon Dubinsky-Ryan Callahan
Christopher Higgins-Vinny Prospal-Marian Gaborik
Aaron Voros-Artem Anisimov-Donald Brashear

Wade Redden- Michal Rozsival
Michael Del Zotto- Dan Girardi
Matt Gilroy- Alexei Semenov

As i said earlier today i dont like that the last couple of days i have seen torts looking at Artie with the 4th line guys and now he is suiting up as the 4th line center. i think torts might be considering keeping grachev and sending down anisimov which to me would be better than keeping artie as a 4th liner, but he deserves to be here and grachev should go down if that is the choice b/w those two.

Well, I got the D right.

If Grachev stays over AA, it’s because Tortorella has decided he doesn’t want to move any of the top 3 centers over to wing. So Grachev being a wing might just get the nod over AA being a center.

I think that’s a terrible mistake though.

If Artem plays 4th line with Voros and Lisin, and Tortorella actually rolls that line with semi-regularity…then it’s not the worst thing ever.

Artem pivoting Brashear though would be a travesty.

i dont see the 4th line playing more than 6-8 min.

by mleetch352 on Sep 24, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

You're probably right

But is that ES time or total ice time?

I mean..if they get 8 minutes of ES time compared to maybe 10 for the 3rd line…there’s really not a lot of difference which line AA is on because he’s unlikely to get much special teams run.

i think ES time would be pretty even among the top 3 lines at maybe 15 min. not to mention the more specialty play the more the 4th gets cut.

no point

in having anisimov or grachev play the 4th line..

i mean we saw the skill anisimov has. its so dumb to put him on the 4th line. so dumb.

prospal dubinsky gaborik

Let’s remember that this is Dubinsky’s first game back, and he has a lot of new players to get used to. I wouldn’t read too much into Anisimov on the 4th line…….yet

I’d still love to see Avery get a shot on the same line as Gaborik, I just think Avery would draw attention and give Gabby more open sheet.

hmm

avery on the LW and prospal centering them.

could work..

last year dubinsky played on drurys wing for a bit.. so that could work if we move prospal to center

I understand the logic

But as I think about it more this preseason, I think Gaborik would be maximized by having 2 high-point potential guys on his line. Avery likely tops out at 35-40, whereas Prospal and Dubinsky could both top out at 65 or so by playing with Gaborik.

So a Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik line is more appealing to me simply because they’re more skilled offensively. And if they get chippy with Gaborik, Dubinsky is perfectly capable of defending him.

I’ve been on my brother and my dad for about a month to two months now. Me and my brother would split the amount for my dad’s tickets because it was his birthday when the idea hit me. Still, nothing. I wish I could go. Never been to a home opener.

I was at the home opener with Gomez and Drury’s debut against Vokun and the Panthers. It was incredible, but the last game I went to was the game 3 Caps and Rangers :/ Though I must say Lundqvist gave me my money’s worth that night. I just cut corners like crazy, I take my classmates txt books to the library and photo copy the chapters we read, it saves like 500 bucks.

Higgins

I think its foolish for people to be saying he is gone after this season. He is a young and hard working. Not afraid to go into the corners, very similar to cally, who everyone loves, with a bit more offense. And a local kid. Why would you not want him on the team going forward. I think he is the kind of guy you build around as he can play on the penalty kill and power play?

by 9erfaninFL on Sep 25, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think it’s a matter of people not wanting him here – more that there’s a reasonable suspicion that the Rangers might not be able to afford him since he’ll be a UFA.

While it’s possible that he’ll sign a contract offer from the Rangers before he hits FA status that would be slightly below market value, I can’t imagine him not trying to get the most $$ he can. If he plays with Gaborik and puts up the points – his stock (and contract price) will just go up.

Since both Staal and Girardi are restricted free agents after this season (and Staal coming off his entry level contract) – they’re both going to get hefty raises. With so much money committed to only a few players (Drury, Gaborik, Lundqvist, Rozsival, Redden) – there’s only a limited amount to go around.

If he puts together the kind of season he’s capable of, people will want him to stay – but the economic reality might prove to be a severe obstacle.
