Evgeny Grachev reassigned to Hartford Wolf Pack
Needing to trim the roster down, the New York Rangers next cut was Evgeny Grachev, who no doubt did impress all in camp. He showed tremendous talent every preseason game, and finished his 5 preseason games going 1G 2A - 3 points.
Grachev scored a goal earlier today against the Washington Capitals, but knew his game overall was a disappointment. "The first period for me was the worst period for me, ever.I didn't think I'd get more ice time. I was way too bad in the first," Grachev said.
Evgeny Grachev has a two-way contract, unlike Aaron Voros - which means reassignment if done later on can be done without waivers. This leaves the Rangers with 13 forwards: Marian Gaborik, Brandon Dubinsky, Vinny Prospal, Chris Drury, Christopher Higgins, Ales Kotalik, Enver Lisin, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, Sean Avery, Donald Brashear, Aaron Voros, and Brian Boyle.
No other cuts today, which means Michael Del Zotto holds on longer.

hmm
1 goal and 2 assits for 5 points.. impressive ;)
this is good for him.. give him another year to develop his name.. hell be even better next year. stronger faster smarter.
weve seent eh potential this kid has, but weve also seen that another year in the minors would greatley benefit him.
im pretty sure mdz gets his spot now.. i highly doubt torts will go with 6 dmen especially when 3 of them are redden rozi and semenov.
semenov was brought in to be a 7th man. before preseason we were pretty sure that gilroy would get a spot and the other spot was up for grabs going to the defensemen who has played best.
it just as easily could have gone to sangs but mdz just outplayed all the other defensemen (besides gilroy) in the preseason and in camp..
im hoping we dont trade sangs or hikkanen though… hikkanen seems like he just needs to adapt to N.A. style of play and sangs looks like he can be an nhl defensemen too. sauer didnt look good, and potter im not really sure. he didnt make a name for himself, good or bad, so i dont know what to think..
either way, with all the prospects im excited for the future..

Why, Why, Why ???????????
Why is that the Rangers are the only team that will never play a young kid?? Every other team drafts a prospect, and 10 minutes later he is playing for the team! Only with the Rangers does the majority of prospects languish in the minors until he is too old or forgotten about altogether!!
Why isn’t Del Zotto already a lock for the team?? Guarantee they keep Redden and Rozy up!! I don’t care how much they make!! Your going to pay them either way so you might as well pay them and win with Del Zotto than watch Rozy waste our time on the ice!!!

Look I am aware that you wanted Grachev up
so did everyone else—myself included. But who do you send down to make room for him? And where does he fit? I don’t want him on the 4th line. I want him to play 20+ minutes in Hartford.

...Grachev up
I also think Grachev should be sent down…let him get some meaningful minutes. With Anisimov, Del zotto, Dubinsky, Callahan, Staal, and Gilroy…we have got some good young players playing now (assuming DZ makes the team, which I think he will now and Semenov will be the 7th defenseman.) side note…i think Drury and Kotalik have to score 25-30 goals this year on the second line. Gaborik can score 40 and Prospal should get 20-25 on the first line…This is a big year for Drury and I think he can still score, especially since he will not be the primary scorer and he is playing with Kotalik again

i here you but
where would he play. on the fouth line?
if we play him who do we send down? drury?
the fact is our roster is full with very talented players. when your third line is avery anisimov callahan yer in good shape. we dont have any room for grachev right now.
we can keep him on the fourth line sure, but thats a waste. i rather him play 20 mins a night in hartford than 5 mins a night in the nhl. it will be much better in the long run.
weve seen his skill, but at that same time weve seen he needs a little more development.. hell only get strongest faster and smarter. plus its not like hes 25. hes 19, give him time.
ansimov is on the team. mdz is on the team. gilroy is on the team.
thats three rookies. i bet most teams dont have 3 rookies.

idk if you were kidding and if you were then disregard this but
Drury has a full no movement clause so he cant be moved at all without his approval.

i meant it as. seriously? we have no room for grachev. if we bring him up we have to send someone else who is better than him at this point down.

Can't say I am surprised
we all knew this was going to happen. Oh well. He will be great in the AHL this year and it will help his development for sure.

The two-way contract has nothing to do with waivers – they are completely unrelated.
A two-way contract pays a lower salary at the AHL level, and a higher one at the NHL level.
He’s ineligible for waivers because of his age and the fact that he hasn’t played any NHL regular season or playoff games.
Being in Hartford is the absolute best move for him and his long-term development.

i thought if you had a two way contract then you were exempt from waivers
and if you had a one way contact you werent, unless you had an exception like the Gilroy case

thats what i thought, and im pretty sure its like that in the video game bc i always lost players when i tried to send some assed to hartford lol.
as for grachev it sucks but we all pretty much knew it was coming. rather see him go down then waste away on the 4th line. guess this means that boyle lives to see another day. heard hes not exactly setting the world on fire, except in PIMs

WAIVERS
some players are exempt from them due to age and experience..
its some formula where age and nhl experince is added up to see if their exempt or not..
the contracts one way or two way just has to do with the amount of their salary

I’ve got to school you, too?? ;-) :-D
A one-way contract pays the same salary regardless of where the individual plays.
A two-way contract pays one salary for NHL games, and a (typically much lower) salary for AHL games.
There are also 3-way contracts – 3 different salaries for NHL/AHL and ECHL (or equivalent).
One – two – or three-way contracts have no bearing whatsoever on waiver eligibility or exemption.
Players are generally exempt from waivers for a certain number of years following the signing of their first professional contract. So, for example. Del Zotto, who was (I believe) 18 when he signed his contract with the Rangers, is exempt from waivers for:
a) 5 years
or
b) 160 NHL games
The 5 year exemption is reduced to three (3) years if he plays in eleven (11) or more NHL games.
Yes – every media outlet on the face of the earth keeps talking about nine (9) games is the max for MDZ – it is actually ten (10). If he plays in his eleventh game, the Rangers lose 2 full years of waiver exemption on him. Given the fact that he’s very likely to play in 2 full seasons worth of games (164 games) over the next 3 years, I believe this is a moot point. (reference NHL/NHLPA CBA – Article 13 – Page 66)

Incorrect. Two-way contracts are for salary amount only. Waivers is determined by age of first contract signed and experience in the NHL. I have a post about it on BSB:

The waiver thing is a very common mistake actually, and it’s only getting fueled by the NHL video games, which takes the easy way out by doing the two-way waiver thing in the game.

This is the best move for Grachev; put your time in on a more competitive league and do well. Hopefully after the olympic break the NYR will call him up- considering the compressed schedule and the need for the forwards needing a little R&R.

Inevitability
It was pretty much known from the beginning of camp that Grachev didn’t really have a place on the roster and would have to set the world on fire to make the team. He didn’t, so to Hartford he goes. It’s not the end of the world.
The roster seems set now unless Tortorella is really only going to go with 1 scratch, in which case I believe it’s Boyle that should be worried based on his comments. But with Avery hurt, I think the roster is set right now.
I personally don’t care what others are speculating, MDZ made the team. Whether he stays after 10 games will be up to him. Tortorella wants a PP QB. MDZ is the only one they have, unless Gilroy steps up or Redden wakes up. So he’s here. Just hold off on buying the #43 jerseys just yet.

how many more are being cut? just one forward most likely right?
by BK! on Sep 28, 2009 12:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
eventually yes
but currently no one else needs to be cut because Avery is injured. When Avery comes back Voros or Boyle will find the axe … one would assume.

maybe not
torts might go with 22.
1 extra forward and 1 extra dmen.
and it fits under the cap.
im pretty sure hes going to go with 7 dmen. when you have 2 rookies, along with r and r, your best bet is to go with 7.
and with forwards ill doubt he will go with just 12. im sure he will have 13.
even when avery comes back its better to have an extra guy. that way you dont have to call someone up everytime someone has a cold or a sprained ankle.
my best guess is the roster is set. lisin fill fill in averys spot until he is back, and than becomes the extra man. also, if boyle or voros, or even brashear dont do what their supposed to lisin will take their spot. remember voros can also play center so if boyle sucks theyll shift voros to center and put lisin on the wing.
