Rangers really still talking about Heatley?

[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 09/03/09 3:34 PM EDT Guys I know we've beaten the Heatley thing to death off and on all summer, but it's a story that just won't go away, and we're inclined to bring it to you, that's why I bumped this to the main page]

Today's ESPN insider rumor mill says:

"The buzz is that the Sharks and Rangers are still interested in Dany Heatley, and the Devils may get in on a three-way deal to help the Sharks get Heatley.

Still, Senators GM Bryan Murray is going to impose a deadline on a trade and is preparing as if Heatley is staying. "I don't want it to be played around all through camp that we're going to continue to try to trade him or whatever it may be. We don't want to (have it hanging over our heads)," he told the Ottawa Citizen." (click link for full story)

Seriously?    How is this still on the radar?     I mean, since I haven't seen it here lately I assume it's a weak buzz at best (BSB breaks stuff much faster than ESPNoHockey), but where there's smoke there's usually Sather's brain working overtime.

Why won't this die?

"Why won't this die" is a question

With a two part answer.

The first part is obvious: the story won’t die because he hasn’t been traded yet, but still wants to be.

The second part is that for at least as long as I have been a Ranger fan, if there is a trade rumor surrounding a big name player in the NHL, the Rangers are always said to be involved.

First – thanks for the bump.

As for the topic at hand, yes, I’m not so much saying why won’t Heatley rumors die, I understand that he’ll be a source of conversation until he’s traded, it was more specifically why are rumors to the Rangers still alive. He was involved in the rumors to the Rangers, hell it sounded like a deal was done at one point. But to this point it should be done.

I would certainly say that it doesn’t help that Dubinsky isn’t signed yet. I think the combination of Heatley rumors and Dubinsky, while 99% unrelated, leaves a little bit of room for speculation that this is the reason, and it’s quite annoying.

by RangerSmurf on Sep 3, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also people might want to note that this is coming from the NHL rumor mill on espn, which has recently cited Hockeybuzz as a source for a rumor…meaning in my mind that they have even less credibility than hockeybuzz if they are borrowing from that idiot..is it possible to have less than 0 credibility?

by KingHenrik on Sep 3, 2009 3:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This has to be completely bogus. As far as I see it the Rangers are set with what they have, assuming they sign Dubinsky, which I’m sure they will. Plus even if this happened, and I hope to God it doesn’t. It would totally cripple the Rangers next season when they need to focus on keeping RFA’s like Staal.

ESPN uses Eklund as their source. Case closed.

by Dave (BSB) on Sep 3, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh, and if they source a paper, it’s probably Bruce “Malkin to the Kings” Garrioch.

by Dave (BSB) on Sep 3, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lol @ the good ol’ Devils.

"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"

there is no way that the Rangers are gonna get him

they dont have the space for him and he would handcuff the team. Although Sather has done this before …

Actually guys, the source was the Ottawa Citizen, and it wasn’t Garrioch. ESPN just got the story from there

hockeybuzz is good for cap central and thats it.

and seriously, Heatley? with what cap space exactly? how much longer till camp starts?

nhlnumbers.com

Is pretty good too! I find it’s interface very easy to use.

You guys don’t want Heater, you want Demitra…come on now, you know Gabby would endorse it too.

How you doing on defense? Need a blueliner that isn’t actually overpriced?

We’ll take Higgins. He is a FA next year anyhow.

Done. I’ll call Mike tomorrow!

nhlnumbers.com and capgeek.com are more up to date and better than hockeybuzz

As for vancityday – no we don’t want Heatley (at least MOST of us don’t). We’ good with what we’ve got at the moment. Now, if Kovalchuk becomes a UFA – that’s a different bag of pucks….
And we’ll find a way to keep Higgins, too.

by dbmaven on Sep 3, 2009 11:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I love this about Kovalchuk, and I’m not saying you personally are like this but most Ranger fans who are anti-Heatley Trade/pro-waiting for kovalchuk UFA signing.

1)The Chances Kovalchuk gets to UFA are about 50/50 right now
2)People talk about how bringing in Heatley would cripple our cap…well what the hell do you think bringing in Kovalchuk will do? He isn’t signing anywhere for less than he’s making now and chances are if he hits UFA he’ll be making even more. Yeah, you don’t give up assets for Kovalchuk, but you do in a sense that you will still have trouble resigning UFAs and RFAs

both men are worth that money, In my opinion we would have a better chance at Heatley than Kovalchuk

by LeetchLovesAmstels on Sep 4, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The difference is

that most Rangers fan believe Redden and Rozsival’s $11.5 will somehow get off the cap next year, which frees up money then to do what they can’t do now.

And given the choice of Ilya vs. Heatley, it would be smarter to target the younger, more skilled, and less headache inducing player.

Also, and not inconsequentially, Ilya is a LW, where the rangers aren’t overly strong, while Heatley is a RW, where there is depth.. So Ilya-Gaborik would work where Heatley-Gaborik would not.

Both to this point are pipe-dreams though.

by RangerSmurf on Sep 4, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good points RangerSmurf.

My take on Kavakchuck has been posted elsewhere. Short version – if Kovalchuk actually becomes a UFA (which I think is less than 50%), trade Rozsival for picks, let Prospal go UFA. There’s 6.1mm against the cap. Sign Kovalchuk to a “Hossa” like deal spread over 10 years – front loaded. He’ll be 37 at the end of the deal.
Risky? Sure – any of these long term deals are. Low risk typically = low reward. If the team performs well this year and you think the D prospects are ready to take Rozsival’s spot – it might just be the ‘missing piece’ that could take you to the Cup.

The reality is that he probably won’t make it to UFA.

by dbmaven on Sep 4, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I may be the only one here, but I'm all for it.

If San Jose no longer has any interest in him like it was recently reported, than the Rangers have a real opportunity to steal another superstore with a deal in thier favor. And I bet this is exacty what Sather and the Ranger organization is thinking because this is a golden opportunity. Sure, they’d have to take some salary from us and a couple of good prospects, but we have a pipeline full of good prospects and look at what we will have in return… Hank, Gabby and Heately plus other potential future all stars. This is the foundation for Stanely Cup winning teams. Just look at what Pitts has? I know Dubi has a good heart, but I just didn’t see the great player everyone else does. I remember that stretch where he didn’t score any goals and it was not pretty. I’d be willing to give him up and another youngster. Just not Staal or Grechav.

by toadmcgee on Sep 4, 2009 11:30 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dubi

On a team that visibly struggled offensively last year still managed to slightly increase his point totals for the season. (40 to 41, not massive) He was also their best ES player against the Caps last year.

I remember watching him in 07-08 and believing then he has the potential to be a 70 pt guy in the league, and given his youth and his ability I see no reason now why that still can’t be true. Yes, he struggled with his goal scoring last year but again, he’s young and the whole damn team struggled to score goals last season.

It’s just too early to give up on Dubi.

by RangerSmurf on Sep 4, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To talk even somewhat negatively about Duby here

is like endorsing terrorism. It doesn’t matter that he simply isn’t nearly as good as everybody thinks, he has potential and works hard. It doesn’t matter he went months as a non factor. I like the kid, I just hate that people act like he is some sort of untouchable Malkin type player.

I know Heatley has been a problem child (that I believe torts will fix) but I would take his problems any day of the week over Donald Brashear. This guy intentional hurt one of our guys and I’m still having trouble getting over it.

Yes to Heatley.

Yes way. Yes yes yes. Sign me up. Why do we as Ranger fans always act like our team is awesome as is going into the year? We have one goal scorer who is as injury prone as anybody. I would trade 3 Dubinsky’s for Heatley.

My thought….I agree with toad. I think this Heatley situation has Sather foaming at the mouth although they have played this tight lipped and for good reason. One by one every suitor has fallen out of the Heater race. Maybe he is a dick, who cares. He is young enough and talented enough to be sick on our squad. He is not going to be a bust like Gomez or Drury…..who both were counted on for 30 goal seasons. For those who say we have no room on the RW for him, you make it. He is by far better than any other winger in our system Sans Gabby. If the Rangers can steal him, and if dubi is a casualty of this trade…so be it. I like our future youth but torts is going to roll a 3 line system so 4th liners are gonna see 5 to 7 minutes a night, if that. I’d love Kovalchuk, but he is not coming hereguaranteed and its a year away, we gotta think now. And if there is any possiblity of it, management will work it out. Kudos to Sather for not throwing the checkbook and youth at the Sens, we might just get steal if it goes down. I have to beleive that Heatley is not going to play for the Sens since all this drama went down, its silly to think that. As fans of the Rangers……are you going to be dissappointed to see a team with Gabby and Heatley? Was Gomer and Drury a better option? We are gonna score goals if this happens.

by earthworm on Sep 4, 2009 8:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Only crazy Ranger fans

Though Gomez was scoring 30 goals. He did it once in a freak season, he’s always been a 15 goal scorer.

As for “making room” on RW. You do so at the detriment of Callahan’s development (by making him learn a new position), or you make Kotalik’s contract look worse by making him move. And by trading to do it, you leave a too-slow drury and a rookie in Anisimov to play the 1st line with Gaborik, so you have to move Prospal to C. Then Avery becomes your 1st line LW,

So you’re adding an egomaniac who disrupts your entire roster and stunts development of your young kids for what exactly? Ok, say he’ll score 50. But he’s replacing Dubinsky, so it’s only 30-35 more. And Callahan switches positions, so that will probably cost you another 10. And Rozsival is gone, so a rookie has to take over his spot, so now you have 3 rookie defensman potentially, so say you allow an extra 10 goals. And Rozsival can score 10 per season, so assume the rookie that replaces him only gets 5.

You’ve gained 10 goals and tied up your cap room further, making it harder to resign Staal Girardi, Higgins, Prospal, and to add anyone else next year, for instance Kovalchuk, Savard, and other guys who play positions not invested in already.

And I haven’t even touched on the fact that Del Zotto or Sanguinetti would have to be included in a deal.

He’s a nice player but he’s not worth all of the trouble he causes off the ice and all the trouble he’d cause on the ice.

by RangerSmurf on Sep 6, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are delusional.

Switching Callahan from RW to LW costs him 10 goals? Lol!

they way i look at it...

who would you rather have on your team…rosival and dubi or heatley….my vote is heatley cuz with an offensive style like the rangers have now heatley can put up 50 goals…but then again we’re thin at center too…but then also we get rid of rosivals contract….its a tough decision…thats why sather is making an ish-load of money

in the end i think nothing will happen because theres no money

by nutz_35 on Sep 5, 2009 11:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

People are counting on Dubinsky to be a first line center….but he is not a tier one player. He is a nice homegrown kid but on good teams maybe a second liner at best maybe…..most definately a third liner and yes, lets wait till he breaks out and has some consistency. IMO Callahan is the better of the two, and although i want Dubi on this team……if it means he has to go for heatley…..um….no problem with that.

Do you think that the Rangers will not make a move to free up cap space? If Redden doesn’t earn his keep he is done by mid season, Rozi will be a part of any major move, going the other way. Smurf, you kinda answered your own point by maintaining Rozi will be gone. If Heatley comes to the team, the cap situation is going to be a wash and be what it is now. Slats will see to that, he knows who we need to sign.

Would I disrupt the right side to put a bonafide 1st line RW in there? Are you serious? What right side…. Kotalik? who? Drury will center Kotalik and likely Avery on the second line. Does Prospal switch to Center? IDK. Dubi is not a 1st line player so everyone’s logic that he is our first line center is by default, he becomes that because there is nobody else. He doesn’t belong there. I would logically consider Drury, he is skilled but not fast enough for Gaborik and if you plug in Prospal there. I would keep him with Kotalik due to their experience in Buffao together……Does Enver Lisin become a dark horse on this team….I see him much as a Zherdev, only maybe not a d-Bag. He certainly has talent, but will he make this team and crack the 4th line…3rd maybe?

Come on, you only have a chance to get better like this once in a blue moon……are you happy with the one goal game loss plague that we have suffered through for eons? Our team can’t score timely goals. I am for whatever makes this team more offensive and Heatley is absolutely a good option. Re: Heatley being a egomaniac who will disrupt the team……Jagr was supposedly a cancer, Avery is a nutbag, Brashear is mercinary…..is Heatley gonna run rampant on Torts team…NO. I don’t care about Sangunetti or Del Zotto. They need to make the team and contribute to matter. Staal and Girardi are solid and will be the #1 pair for a while. there are so many young defensemen who are highly touted in this system, if we trade one or even two for star firepower that is still youthful, I’m for it. Mcdonough?? He is supposed to be the second coming. I’m interested to see Kyle Mclaren, I bet he makes the team. That’s 5 spots taken if rozi is still here. Sorry for the rant .

by earthworm on Sep 6, 2009 1:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No need to apology

Obviously you feel strongly about it. That’s commendable. I of course feel strongly the other way.

My point about Roszival being gone was that to make room for Heatley this year, he’s the only one that is expendable with enough cap room to get Heatley here. I think Rozsival will end up staying to the end of his contract if he’s not traded, and that it’s only about 65-70% he gets traded as it stands.

That’s all I got this time, my arguments are out there.

by RangerSmurf on Sep 6, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually thinking about this further, your first line is Higgins, Prospal, Gaborik….plug Avery in there occassionally maybe against the Flyers, Devs, Isles. …swapping Avery for Higgins. We are actually short on the left side for the third line, you figure someone switches to play that wing. The 4th line is irrelevant…anisimov centers, Brashear and Voros or Lisin. Does Lisin switch to LW 3rd line? If Heatley comes in He switches to LW 1st or 2nd line. I like the potentioal of the 3rd line, maybe add Lisin in there…speed, forechecking and those guys can score some goals.

Higgins LW, Prospal C, Gaborik RW
Avery, Drury, Kotalik
your name here , Dubinsky, Callahan
Brashear, Anisimov, Lisin

Defense….you have 4 NHL players in Redden, Rozival, Girardi and Staal. Mclaren is gonna make the team I think…..then who Gilroy? That makes Sanguinetti, Sauer, Potter, Sauer, Heikkenen and Mc D outsiders…..develop them, keep tabs on them, unload a couple of them for Heatley.
