Prospect Review: Evgeny Grachev

Photo from Getty Images

This prospect review will tackle the Rangers biggest prospect: Evgeny Grachev. Since he became the Rangers 3rd round pick (75th overall) in the 2008 NHL draft there has been tons of talk of how great he is. Now we were all aware that he was a steal to be picked in the third round, but how much of a steal was he?

Grachev came over to North America right after he was drafted--a huge plus for him in my book--and joined the OHL. Last year (his rookie campaign) he scored 40 goals and added 40 assists for 80 points in 60 games along with a whopping +48; a performance that earned him OHLrookie of the year honors. He then opened more eyes when he played in the playoffs scoring 11 goals along with 14 assists in 19 games. Simply put: the 19 year old Ranger prospect completely dominated and manhandled the OHL.

Hockey's Future recently came out with their top 20 prospects of the New York Rangers and Grachev found himself on top of that list. He was above Anisimov and above McDonaghand we know how high scouts are on them. This speaks volumes to me simply because everyone expects Anisimov to make the Rangers this year; so if Grachev is ranked above an--almost certain--NHL player then that makes me happy.

Click after the jump for more on Grachev.

Star-divide

Hockey's Future did an analysis of Grachev and they had this to say on his talent level:

Grachevis a top prospect withsize, a physical presence and good hands. An above average skater with a pro shot and the ability to protect the puck, Grachev has transitioned from being a center to being a winger. Expected to be a power forward at the next level, Grachev will need to work on giving the team a consistent effort throughout the game, but there is no question that he has all the skills to be a top-six forward in the NHL.

If that isnt enough to get you excited about Grachev then I have more for you. As usual Jess from the Prospect Park has been helping us and he is incredibly high on Grachev as a prospect. When it came to Grachev he had this to say:

The question is where to begin in describing him? Start with a +48 which gets overlooked because Grachev was 40-40-80 last season on offense. Grachevis the prototype for the new style of power forward as he is adept at both a power and finesse game. Grachevhas several different shots that he uses to score with. Grachev is very solid 2 way player who has great instincts for the game. Is still adjusting to the North American style of play and workload. Needs to add more upper body muscle as well as improve his first step acceleration.

Now there is some controversy over where he will be playing next year. There was original reported that the Rangers had already told his OHL team (Brampton) that he was not returning; but we are now aware that those reports are unconfirmed. Regardless of where he will play next year Grachev is going to get a good hard look in camp, which will be good for him. Many scouts--Jess included--have said that Grachev will probably need a year in the AHL to help him develop. And to be completely honest I don't mind waiting a few years for Grachev to come to Broadway so long as he is being developed properly.

Either way he is definitely the Rangers most exciting prospect, what do you all think of him? Let me know in the comments.

Seems like this guy has what it takes to be a top NHL talent…it would be amazing to finally see a ranger draft pick become a dominant player in the NHL…I really hope the rangers screw this up

I’m assuming you mean you hope they DON’T screw it up?

My bad guys

I totally meant that I hope sather doesn’t screw this up…but seriously if this guy becomes who we think he will be…the rangers will have 2 offensive juggernauts and will be competing with the pens and red wings in the upcoming years

I think if the rangers can survive the cap the next 2 years and keep some stability in the line up they’ll be a cup contender

Does anybody find it odd there are no goaltending prospects on the new top 20?

It speaks alot of our depth at forward. I don’t see a use for Grachev this year on the team. With the players signed, and the position they signed for, the only spot available in on the fourth line, with would only hurt his development. If he is so incredibly outstanding during camp, good. Just don’t put him on the team because he will get so much more ice time on a different one. (But we already knew that…)

It’s also interesting to note the article says Matt Zaba will most likely compete for backup next year.

I dont find it odd....

Lundquist is still super young and I think they are trying to round out the forwards right now to go with the defenseman we drafted earlier. I think they will go back to goalie next year or the year after.

I heard the other Swedish goalie will be replacing Valiquette next year after his contract is up.

also dont forget that they really havent drafted a top flight goaltender

they got some guys in the system that can make it work.

Still exciting to watch!

I hope we see him...

I hope to see Grachev at the NHL level in a few games this season, much like we’ve seen some of our d-prospects in the last year or two.

seems

a perfect fit to take prospal’s spot next year… nice to see Sather going with a few 1 year contracts this year.

by j-red on Sep 4, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions

As much as Rangers fans have given Sather grief over the years, this is one year where you have to almost scratch your head and wonder if he’s been taken over by a (rational) alien presence.
The one year deals for Prospal and Higgins make a whole lot of sense. While personally I think Higgins will do well and should be kept – having OPTIONS (!!) is the mark of a good GM in the CAP era – and Sather has left his options open wherever possible.

Grachev will probably be in Hartford – it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for him to tear up the OHL again – let’s see what he can do against other top prospects and professionals in a more physical and faster-paced game. If he remains true-to-form, bring him up for a few games if the need exists or to give someone with a minor injury time to heal. Sure seems like he’s got game – let’s hope he stays healthy and keeps progressing !

i think sather finally realized the errors of his ways in signing the older veterans passed their prime and saw many other teams(detroit, jersey) coming up with quality players from within your system and it finally kicked in after drury and gomez didnt pan out the way we all had hoped

by Conway on Sep 4, 2009 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

whether it was just signing Tortorella – or discussions they’ve had since the signing – I really think that has a lot to do with it. If you’re going to play an up-tempo hard-hitting forechecking ‘Safe is Death’ game, you can’t do it with a roster made up of aging past-their-prime ex-stars.

Hard to get excited

When I can’t pronounce his name. Anyone got a phonetic spelling of Grachev?

Seriously though, this kid looks like he could be a beast for a decade if he continues this pace. It’s hard NOT to get excited.

Ill give it to you

Sound it out letter by letter. Grachev sounds exactly like its spelt

Short a, long a

Ch – like in chair or in charades?

It’s not that simple. Damn smart ass site managers.

by George E. Ays on Sep 4, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Evgeny = Ev-jen-ee (like the name ‘Jenny’)
Grachev = Grr-a (short ‘a’ like ‘baa’ as in the sound a sheep makes) – ch-ev

Not true phonetics – but hopefully it works.

by dbmaven on Sep 4, 2009 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

and I forgot to include “ch – like in check”

by dbmaven on Sep 4, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks db

I am now a smarter Ranger fan, slightly.

by George E. Ays on Sep 4, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Nyet! ;)

There’s no “J as in Jenny” sound in the Russian language.

Evgeni = yehv GYEH nee
Grachev = gra CHOHV

Gr as in “grumpy”
a as in “hat”
ch as in “chair”
o as in “oat”
the “v” sound at the end is kinda soft, almost like an “f”

Though I suspect over here it’ll become “gra-CHEHV” as in CHEVy Chase, and that’ll be fine too. ;)

by Laurie Carr on Sep 4, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Laurie -

I don’t remember where I saw it/heard it – but the way I phoneticized (or mangled, as the case may be) his first name was specified as the way he preferred it be pronounced – and that it was “unusual”.

You’re way is the ‘classic’ pronunciation – and what I would naturally have used.

Having said all that – the deal I saw (I wish I could find it again) could have been some random French-Canadian version of what he was trying to say…..or pure made up bulls….

I guess we’ll find out in due course. :-)

grachev ..

just think if cheraponov did not die the rangers would be looking at chraponov , grachev ; ansimov , gilroy ryan borque , dubinsky, callahan , del zotto ,and sangunetti , now that a great core of a youth movement i hope he gets a look in training camp but i think he is at least 2 years away but its worth the wait ….

be patient

when he comes to the nhl.. theyll learn to say it right..

we have a lot of good young players who will develop in good time but we need to be patient..

id say grachev will be a player next year.. but id like to see them do what they did with potter, sauer, anisimov..

let him play a few games this year to be introduced to the speed of the nhl.. that would be smart
