Rangers News: NY Post: Rangers squeezing Dubinsky
A little Dubinsky update from the NY Post, once you get done listening to Larry Brooks pat himself on the back. (If it was "orginally reported here", doesn't that mean you technically made the story up? Whoever gave you the information is really the one who reported it first, no?)
Anyway, you can read the full story here
Highlights:
First, a correction: Brandon Dubinsky's qualifying offer for the upcoming season is not $698,500 as originally reported here and subsequently repeated by all other news outlets.(see above)
The qualifier, as per Rangers' assistant GM Cam Hope, is a two-way offer of $522,500/$60,000, though the minor league number is essentially meaningless given that Dubinsky would have to pass through waivers in order to get to the AHL.
"We've had a number of positive and amicable discussions with the Rangers and we'll continue to work at it," Kurt Overhardt, Dubinsky's agent, told The Post yesterday. "Neither Brandon nor I have any interest in attempting to negotiate this through the newspaper, so we'll keep the conversations private.
Sounds like its only a matter of time, and I can't fault the Rangers for exercising the leverage they have. It's a business, that's just the way it is.
Make sure you vote in the poll!
By the way, if you don't get that the poll is intended to be tongue-in-cheek, you should be sentenced to one day of watching "The 5 greatest saves of Rick Dipietro's career" on a continuous loop.

I dug up an article from the days of his signing his contract.
http://bit.ly/2JYumO
Apparently, the cap calculators are skewed somehow.
Could be that he played most of the first year of the contract in Hartford – which I guess would be pro-rated across the 3 years for a cap hit perspective. Then add the bonus that got spread across the same period? Don’t know – but appears that the new information per Cam would be correct.
Kudos to Dubi and his agent (and the Rangers, as well) for not wanting to negotiate through the press. That’s a rarity these days..
Nice find
I miss Sidearm Delivery. Brushback’s “retirement” was one of the reasons I ultimately started my blog. Had he stuck around, I’d probably have a lot more free time in the evenings. ;)
You are misreading this. He is talking about the total amount of the contract, not the annual payout. Dubinsky’s cap hit included his bonus, as per the CBA, for the years he was under contract in the NHL. Meaning, of his $500k bonus (divided by 3 for the number of years in the contract), that amount was added to his annual salary at the NHL level (two way contracts mean that it is a different pay for the AHL) to get his cap hit.
Cam Hope..
confirmed the qualyfier and it is much less than what was first reported, this will be a sweet signing.

as i have said before Sather should use the leverage he has this year not to lowball dubi but to get him an added year at a lower price than he would otherwise pay. i suggest a 4 year deal that is something like 1.2 this year 2.2, 2.4 the following 2. This doubles what dubi would make this year and equals what Cally got for his first 2 arb years. As a sign of good faith from Dubi he matches the overage the rangers gave him this year to take less in the 4th year, say 2.6 mil. If dubi was to break out this year like Zajac did the rangers would be paying him well north of 3 mil a year on a new deal. this way the rangers show their faith in dubi, he gets security and the rangers save money as the total deal works out to 8.4 mil over 4 years or a 2.1 mil cap hit.
That’s probably similar to one of the scenarios that’s currently on the table (per the reports).
And for the Rangers/Sather – you are absolutely correct.
But that’s exactly why this has taken so long!
Why would Dubinsky want to accept a 4 year deal like that – when the possibility exists that he has his ‘breakout’ year this year, which would dramatically increase his value?
It’s in his interest to get something like a 2 year deal – something greater than the QO – even if it’s less than what he would get out of a banner year and arbitration next year. The risk for him is that he has a great year this year and then falls back in 10/11 – at the end of which he is arb eligible – so he needs to have 2 good back to back years.
If the Rangers won’t budge on the offers they’ve put out – he’ll take the risk of going with the QO and ARB next summer. Which might not be in the Rangers best interests – esp. if he does have that breakout season. Risk/reward balance for both sides…..
plus he is basically making the league minimum anyway
so even if plays awful his contract cant be any worse

Leave it to you to find a silver lining…. ;-) :-D
I think most people would freely admit that Dubi is worth more than what he made last year – and more than the QO/League min – even Sather. Especially when you put his stats and consistent effort up against some other players.
Just have to see where the balance in the risk/reward scenarios lies for both sides.
This site is all about silver linings

Bass Ackwards
The organization throws boatloads of money at Redden, Rosival, Drury, Gomez, etc., etc., etc. and too much for Brashear, but squeezes Dubinsky for his last drop of blood, lets Orr go for peanuts and doesn’t even look at Betts.
I’m confused…
we have been down this road too many times
there is no need to go into it here again. Let’s let it go.

Not worth the time
I am sorry but as a long time Rangers fan I really don’t see what all the fuss over Duby is. I think he is a nice player but by no means worth all this discussion. All this talk is hypothetical…Let’s wait until he has a break out year before we worry about how much he is worth and how important he is…If he wasn’t a homegrown player we probably would not even be talking about him…We still lack true offensive talent in the system and we won’t win a cup without a true #1 center. Having a guy who we have to debate on whether or not to give him the preverbal shot at being a #1 does not cut it. Let’s move on
THANK YOU
it is annoying seeing people act as if Duby is already some superstar and to scoff at the idea of trading him for Richards (a player who Duby has showed no reason to believe that he will ever be better then) or whoever else. He is good, but as of right now he is a disapointment, he is coming off a year where he went way below expecations. Honestly, the thing Duby is most famous for to me is hating Sean Avery (who has been far more important to te Rangers then Duby ever has) a couple years ago. He is talented, and he is a solid player, but you guys acting like he is already some superstar…. wake up.

woah woah woah
a disapointment? Exactly what team are you watching? So Dubinsky didnt have a breakout year in points but what about everything else? he was great on faceoffs a big time hitter played great defense and a leader.
Both years he has played a full NHL season he was in a major defensive system. And with Renney his linemates were moving around about 3 times a game. it is hard to gel in a system like that.
Why dont we give him a year or two under torts before we just throw int he towel on him? Okay?
And to be honest if the only think you like about Dubinsky is that he hates Avery then you might want to pick a new team to watch.

Where did I say I like that Dubinsky hated/hates Avery...
you must have gotten that from the part where I said he is most famous for hating Avery, who is far more important to the Rangers then Dubinsky has ever been. Yeah, he wins faceoffs, awesome. Sounds like a third line center to me, so whats all the fuss about him getting squeezed? He hasn’t done shit in the NHL.

LABOR DAY
I’m one of the 13 people who said that he would be signed by labor day…..I said it weeks ago and i’m stickin’ to it…….i’ll probably be wrong
ahhh
ur right in a sense bls..
hes def. a hard working guy and was in the top 10 in hits along with callahan..
but until he improves on 13 goals, we need to think realistically.. while he might be our first line center, for a realistic team hes a 2nd/3rd line center.. so he should get paid for being a 3rd line center.. 2 mil max..
my opinion is no one will send him an offer, and hell have to take the QO.. than if he shows up we resign him sometime through the season for a long-term contract…
I like Duby and all
but I think the condescending attidude towards any idea about trading him around here is getting old. He is talented, so are a lot of other guy. What exactly did he do last year to prove that he is so damn untouchable? He didn’t do a damn thing without Jagr. I like Duby, and he may or may not develop into a star, but he hasn’t even come close to doing that yet. All he has proven is that he is capable of playing with Jagr but not capable (yet) of being the main guy on his line. If moving him brought back a real top level player, then sign me up.

we like to continue our ‘from within’ movement that has started and build a nice core to have for years to come. id like to see us make a trade for a top level player with dubi involved while still staying under the cap. simply not possible. lets be honest, were not gonna be able to dump either of r&rs contracts at this point.
also, we as ranger fans just generally love the blue collar hard working types, especially if they come from our system and are american. u dont have to score 30+ goals to be a productive player, even on a top line
