Rangers Recap: Rangers pound Lightning 8-2 (Updated)
After the Rangers fantastic effort against the Montreal Canadians we talked about repeating their performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Too many time this year the Rangers have won a gut check game that you would expect them to build on, and came out flat the very next game. Well that didn't happen tonight.
The New York Rangers obliterated (by the way that's the first time I have ever used that word in a recap) the Lightning tonight, playing their second dominant game in a row. Brandon Dubinsky, Vaclav Prospal, Chris Drury, Dan Girardi, Enver Lisin, Marc Staal, Aaron Voros (no I'm not kidding) and Christopher Higgins (no I'm not kidding) were the goal scorers for the Rangers tonight. The points were well spread out but it should be noted that 16 (that's not a mistake, 16) different Rangers had points tonight.
The onslaught started early, with the Rangers getting a power play just 1:18 seconds into the contest; 8 seconds later Dubinsky scored the first goal of the night. Less than 6 minutes later Prospal scored off of a pretty feed from Gaborik to put the Rangers up 2-0. The Rangers dominated the first expect for a small potion at the end of the period where the Lightning scored their first goal. It was an awkward play which saw Vincent Lecavalier score a goal from behind the net after the Lightning found themselves inside of the Rangers net. That made the score 2-1 and it was as close as the Lightning would come to making this a game thanks to Drury scoring less than a minute and a half later.
The Rangers continued their great play in the second with Girardi scoring on a laser from the point and then Lisinscoring with 3 minutes left in the period. This goal chased Antero Niittymaki, this marked the first time that the Rangers chased a goaltender all season. The Lightning would score their last goal of the night on a 5 on 3 with Alex Tanguay rifling one over Henrik Lundqvist's glove.
The third period was more of the same from the Rangers. Staal finished off a brilliant end to end rush to score his 5thgoal of the year shortly later Aaron Voros scored his first of the season; and Higgins finished the scoring for the Rangers with his 6th of the season.
If this wasn't a statement game then I don't know what is. For two games in a row the Rangers have sustained an incredible effort for 60 minutes, stood up for themselves and each other, and have gotten secondary scoring. This is the type of Ranger team we have all been begging to see, and finally it seems we are seeing some real Ranger hockey. The biggest statement in my eyes was Dubinsky beating the crap out of Jeff Halpern at the end of the game after Halpern tried to start with him.
Game Highlights:
Empty Netters:
- Marc Staal has now (at this point in the season) passed his career highs in a season for goals, assists and points.
- Marian Gaborikhad 4 assists tonight which for the first time all season gives him more assists than goals. The last time he had 4 assists in a game was October 26th, 2002 against Phoenix.
- Speaking of Gaborik, for anyone out there that still thinks that "he can only score goals" I think you should put your foot in your mouth. He is a very underrated passer and he showed off his skills tonight. It's nice to see that when he isn't scoring goals he is setting guys up. Imagine what he would do on a high scoring team.
- Some of you might boo Aaron Voros for not fighting at the end of the third period but that's a really good move in my opinion. The Rangers were already up 6-2 and didn't need to give the Lightning any type of edge, good for him. Plus he got rewarded by scoring his first goal of the season his very next shift.
- Then Voros got into a fight after the game was well out of hand, and left the ice to chants of "Voros, Voros, Voros" good for him.
- Michael Del Zotto is starting to put up points consistently and is starting to shoot the puck a lot more. His play is really improving by leaps and bounds.
- The Rangers have now scored 14 goals their last 2 games, and who says we don't have any secondary scoring?
- Matt Gilroy should also be noted to having a great game, notching two assists and playing a great game overall.
Okay boys have at it! Hard to complain now!

POST-GAME QUOTES
John Tortorella on tonight's game...
"We are trying to stay consistent with it. We are trying to stay consistent with finishing checks and again defending the proper way. I thought the first period both teams were giving up chances left and right and we are fortunate we score a few goals. I don't know if it is continuation. We are just trying to stay consistent with it."
Chris Drury on tonight's game...
"(We are) just continuing to play the right way and keep moving forward. It was an emotional game playing Montreal, we were obviously energized and we just came back and played hard."
Henrik Lundqvist on the team crashing the net for goals...
"We've been working on it for weeks now. That's how you score goals; it's in front of the net, in the blue, you just have to battle. It's not often when you beat a goalie one-on-one, you have a clear shot. A lot of times, its deflections in front, it's rebounds. And when you start getting those goals, then you start making nice plays too. The last few games we've been doing a good job of coming in front and creating opportunities for rebounds."

Gabby is not a great passer
But he does make smart plays with the puck. He made an awesome play on that Prospal goal, seeing that he was already covered and quickly touching to his playmaker (although I dont think anyone could have predicted the defenseman playing that 2 on 1 so poorly). He made another great play on the Staal goal, tapping it back to Dubi even when he knew he’d get hit.
Definitely nice to see them putting up secondary scoring for once. Maybe other teams will stop blanketing Gaborik so blatantly as they’ve been doing lately if other guys can actually contribute.

Not saying I disagree with Joe that he’s underrated as a passer, I just dont think he’s great.

I mean… 4 assist? Kinda hard to get them if he’s a terrible passer…

Is it cause or effect?
Is Torts playing the 3rd and 4th lines more because he doesn’t want to wear out the top 6 with so many games in such a compressed period? Or because the games are well in hand, so he doesn’t have to play the top 6 as much? Or is there something else going on??
Whatever it is – it seems the entire team is more effective these last 2 games – whether those guys are causing it, or whether they’re benefiting from the effects of big leads – it’s a good thing. If scoring breeds confidence – there should be a whole lot of it in that locker room right now.
well when those players on the top 2 lines play less minutes, they can give more energy on their shifts.
i like when he uses all four lines
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
As the game got out of hand for Tampa, Torts gave the the 3 & 4th lines more ice time. I don’t think they get anywhere close to that amount of ice time if the rangers are down -1 or even
….But have to say; I have been of recently and definitely was tonight impressed by Boyle’s game, especially his aggression on the forcheck
I fell asleep in between the first and second periods, but I thought the 4th line had a fair amount of ice time to start the game. I think Tort’s has been seeing some extra jump from them and continuing to give them shifts.
Who is this #6??? The other one used to make terrible mistakes with the puck, poor decisions without it and was as soft as they come. I like this guy better.
I almost crapped my pants when Boyle hit the breaks and then hit the post when he tried to roof that shot…

He played the third and fourth lines more often once we got a 4 goal lead, giving our stars a bit of a rest. Note that Gaborik only played for 15 minutes even (in comparison, Anisimov got 14:58, Higgins got 16:33, Lisin got 12:58, Dubinsky with the high for forwards with 18:36).
If he does this more often in spite of a goal lead or deficit, we may start to see a little change for the better. It would also help if he keeps some kind of consistent lines.
Great game
love to see this 2 in a row like this.
Would’ve rather they spread this out over those previous 3….but hopefully this sparks something big?
Not gonna expect more of this….but I’d love to see it agaiN!

Kudos to Torts for doing the right thing.
Guy earned Powerplay time, drew the penalty, got the just desserts.
Tonight was – in my opinion – the best game they’ve played all season long. I don’t know what’s in the water @ the Garden, but don’t change the filter.

Drury needs PP time to be Drury. Even if Kotalik is in the lineup he shouldn’t be on PP1 any more. Put him on PP2 to get that unit going and let Drury run the 1st unit.

I have directv, and had no way of recording the game, so when i come home and see that we not only won, but put up 8 damn goals, i am alil pissed off!! i love to see us win, but hate how i have to constantly miss games….Joe, thanks for a great recap as usual, but it certainly doesnt replace seeing the game…and i only believe higgins scores when i see it, so im still not sure if that actually happened! :)
+1
I complained to directv and they gave me 1/2 of the NHL package money back. It felt good until my buddy tells me he got ALL the NHL package money back. Next season it’s NHL center ice online … plugged into my HDTV. Since MLB and NFL are also online, why do I still have directv?

Tampa first goal...
Can someone explain why the first goal wasn’t reviewed for interference?
You can review interfernece calls. There was no penalty called so I would have thought the player in the net could very well have interfered. I’m not arguing… I’m trying to understand. I would have been good with a review and the goal allowed… but don’t understand the no review?

Game
I was at the game tonight and boy was the place loud. One point about Gilroy. It didn’t end up meaning anything but he made one pass in the 1st I think when it was 2-0 Rangers that went literally right to a Lightning player. Obviously it meant nothing, though

My take on this team is still the same for right now: We really don’t know which Ranger team we are getting from shift to shift, period to period, game to game.
That being said, I love the way the Rangers have attacked the last five periods. They have been absolutely relentless, foot on the gas, safe is death, and whatever other cliche’ you want to use. For the last few weeks, we have seen more often than not the hockey we expected to see coming into this season. It’s a good sign.

Two great games by the Rangers
They have finally come out and are playing good hockey. It’s not great yet, but it’s good hockey. I am enjoying their play and eight different goal scorers to boot. Gaborik has great hands and he made three great 1st assists.
I think it was a fabulous idea for Torts to bench both Kotalik & Brashear. Both of them can’t do anything. Kotalik can’t rip that cannon he has & I believe right now Brashear is past it. Dubi & Cally have finally stepped up their scoring and assisting abillities and the defense is also scoring as well.
I just found out that Petr Sykora is out on waivers by the Wild. Should we entertain a second chance with Sykora and put Kotalik on waivers? At least Sykora will score more than Ales.
I am very happy right now that the Rangers are playing better & they have to maintain this till the Olympic break.

Well, he’s right that this team isn’t a cup contender/playoff ready.
They’re not as good as they’ve played any more than they’re as bad as they played against Ottawa and St. Louis. They’re an average team. Built for the 6-8th seed with no cap room, or as it’s best known, hockey hell.
He’s wrong however in that he thinks Dubinsky is a 3rd liner. (and Cally for that matter, but you can at least make a debatable case for Cally)

This may not be a cup contender team and we don’t look playoff ready yet. I do however think, with our roster, we should be around 5th in the east maybe better with the king. We sure hadn’t played like that in a while. The scoring draught was painful to watch. If we can score regularly score 3 a night Lunquist will get us the wins. This team should make the playoffs.
As for all third line players, We certainly have our share of first and 2nd line players. We can argue about who they are, but to think that these are all 3rd line guys I don’t see it.
by CTrangerfan on Jan 20, 2010 11:12 AM EST up reply actions
At this point, they’re not really better than any of the top 4 seeds though, so even if they could climb to 5 it doesn’t make it any easier…you get Brodeur or Crosby/Malkin. So regardless of where they are seeded, you’re reliant on Henrik to steal a series.
Now, this team is better equipped to steal a series like they tried to against Washington last year, but you’re still in the same place….5-8 seed with no cap room to improve.
At this point I just pray Sather doesn’t stop gap again to make a push and leaves the rosters (NHL and AHL) intact.

No doubt, that was a fun game
I enjoyed every minute of it.
I’m just contrarian in nature. When we’re good, it’s worth noting we’re not that good. When we’re bad, it’s worth noting we’re not that bad.
It’s also worth noting (for the sake of a little optimism in my posts) that Dubinsky might just be making the leap. He’s on pace for 52 points (62 if he had played 82 games).
And he has 18 points in 19 games since returning from injury, over which the Rangers are 10-4-5.

Re: Dubinsky – those are the kinds of things that get lost – thanks for surfacing that stat.
It’s taken an extra month or 6 weeks to happen – but it appears that this team is finally putting the Tortorella “system” together in their heads and in their play. Now the question is – can they sustain it and do it on a consistent basis?
If Tort wises up from these past 2 games and runs 4 lines consistently, something like 18-15-14-13 (22-20-18), we’ll be able to have that jump, that extra stride, that additional man on the forecheck near the end of his shift knowing that the first and second lines don’t need to pace themselves as much.

Great Game
What happened to the point machine Rozival….lol
I said this a lot last year to my buddies, but it seems Dubinsky, Cally and Staal turn it up in the second half of the season. If that play continues from them and some others, we are really going to be a problem for some teams going down the stretch.
Contender
Well we may not have been predicted as a cup contender but i’d rather be the underdog where we are now and continue to improve than being considered a favorite (ala 2 years ago by espn) and stinking.
While I think realistically we’re not a top 5 team, we do have potential if we get just 1 more goal a game out of the secondary scoring group (Cally, Drury, Higgy, Avery, etc). we could very well creep up on a lot of teams if we finally put this together. If we run it til the break and after we could very well see ourselves in the top 5. Hank is Hank. If we get that extra goal we could challenge in the playoffs for sure
winning is great and all but I want to see this kind of performance against teams like Pittsburgh, NJ, Washington and buffalo
Save by Richter!
I agree – I’ll be very curious to see what they do against the Pens on Monday. Although without Fleury, they’re not as ‘elite’ as with him.
I’d be curious to hear anybody’s thoughts about which of the top 4 teams we might have more of a chance against than others.
Personally, I think we would have no chance against Washington or Pittsburgh, a small chance against Buffalo, and a smaller chance against NJ but still a chance.
4% against Pittsburgh (we’re 0-3 this year, outscored 16-7)
35% against Washington (we’re 1-1, outscored 7-6)
45% against New Jersey (we’re 1-1-1, outscored 6-5)
50% against Buffalo (we’re 1-1, even scoring, both one goal games)

Although I bow to a higher authority when it comes to stats and all things Ranger, a couple things:
Yes we were outscored 16-7 by Pens so far, but one of those games Valiquette was in net. Having said that, I still think we’d have next to no chance.
But a larger point worth considering – if you applied your statistical model to last season’s postseason matchups (regular season record/scoring), wouldn’t there have been a lot of upsets, eg. with Sharks and Boston getting bumped in the first round, etc.?
If Washington doesn’t have Varlamov and their primary goalie is Theodore, they become substantially more beatable, though probably not by the Rangers.
Statistical Model!! Ha!
35% of all statistics are made up. I didn’t model anything, I was merely showing the records against the various teams for those who didn’t feel like looking it up.
As for upsets, San Jose did lose in the 1st round, in a series Hiller basically stole (and Hiller almost stole the Detroit series too) Boston didn’t but they played a completely overmatched Montreal team that they dominated all of last year, before succombing to Carolina. And the Rangers likely beat the Caps last year if Varlamov never comes in, they killed Theodore.
But no, I don’t believe the “model” is an actual predictor of anything. If it was, I’d be pretty rich by now.

OK got it.
Then – regular season stats aside, and assuming all of the starting goalies are healthy – do we have a real shot against any of the top 4 in your view?
In my opinion
I think it’s a coin flip against Miller & Buffalo – they’re not that much more talented than us. In alot of ways they’re similar to the Rangers, Miller is absolutely carrying them, so it’s a battle of who outplays who. They don’t have a Gaborik up front, but get pretty balanced scoring, which of course is something the Rangers lack.
Problem with the Devils is not only to they have the goalie in Fatso, but they also have a bonafide superstar in Parise and the balancing scoring up front. But Lundqvist has a good history against the Devs + it’s a rivalry, so it sways to where the Devs should be favored but they have a solid chance of winning.
Washington comes down to goaltending. Their offense is lights out and if Lundqvist isn’t sharp the Rangers have close to no chance, whereas if Varlamov/Theodore/Neuvirth struggle, they can still overcome it.
Pittsburgh is just a nightmare. Rangers have no luck in the Igloo, they have two superstars and a top 10 goalie. Hell, Staal-Kennedy-Cooke are enough of a hassle to deal with, before you even look at the 1st two lines. There’s a reason they won the cup last year and almost the year before. Henrik will need to post a .960+ SV% for them to have a chance. They still have Pittsburgh 3 more times though, if the team from last night shows up all 3 times, I’d probably up those chances. It’s a tall order though.

Not the first time this year they've chased a goalie...
Steve Mason was pulled in that 7-4 win back in November. Otherwise, great recap to a great game.
that was a bummer for me cause I am a HUGE Steve Mason fan.

Wow; you don't hear that every day (huge Steve Mason fan).
Pray tell; is there a story there?

I know his numbers arent very good this year with a .895 or whatever save percentage, but I just love the way he plays the game. Although I say the same about Kipprusoff, Nabokov, Ward, Fluery, Backstrom, Price, Anderson, Bryzgalov, Miller, Rinne, Rask, Varlamov, Pavlech(spelling?), and of course Hank and Veinte Nueve.
