Is Ales Kotalik on the way out?
I know we don't like to get into a lot of rumors, but this one comes from someone who is usually in the know when it comes to stuff like this. Remember, this is unconfirmed until something happens, but it's something to think about.
Tonight on Blueshirt Banter Radio, we got what could be a little bit of a scoop. Our good friend Ricky, who does a tremendous amount of sports marketing and promotion, including a lot with the Rangers, had a card signing booked for Ales Kotalikin March. Ricky has received a call from Kotalik's agent cancelling the signing, and has refunded the money to Ricky that he paid up front for the signing.
According to the agent, Kotalik has asked for a trade, telling the Rangers he is not happy with the organization, and wants to be traded, released, or he will defect to Russia. Kotalik has allegedly told the Rangers he would like to be traded out west.
Worth keeping an eye on at this point.

this would be a great move. I read that his NTC kicks in starting next season, so the earlier the better. No point in keeping him if he is not going to play.

as much as i cant stand rozi i want no part of souray. the dude is -16 in 32 games, is hurt a lot and has an even bigger cap number than rozi.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 21, 2010 12:23 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah...
…but Souray is a free-agent after this season, so he comes off the books. Plus, he’s much better than Rozi on the power-play. Him and Del Zotto on the point would be scary. It’s probably moot though, because finding a team to take Rozi’s contract is unlikely. Then again, I thought the same about Gomez.
check again Souray has 2 years left. if he only had 1 then maybe i could deal with it.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 21, 2010 12:39 AM EST up reply actions
Just stick it out with Rozi, hes playing well as of late and only has 1 more year. Lets not get crazy here with big names that are over the hill.

I want no part of Sheldon Souray as well. The Rangers don’t need another defenseman who has the ability to put the puck in the net. B/w Gilroy, MDZ, Sanguinetti they’re covered in that department. What they need is somebody who can clear the crease.
by John Merrigan on Jan 21, 2010 10:59 AM EST up reply actions
Maybe you’re thinking of the other Souray…..
When Craig MacTavish speaks, I’ll listen.
“It’s just plain lethal,” former Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. “But don’t be confused about Sheldon. He provides more than just a big shot. He’s big and strong and nasty to play against. He makes an impact that way, too.”
If they want Rozsival and Kotalik for Souray, I’m listening. Hell, I’m buying all 3 of them their 1st class plane tickets…..
They won’t take Kotalik back. They have cap issues as is.
by Dave Shapiro on Jan 21, 2010 11:40 AM EST up reply actions
not to mention the 2nd worst record in the league so why would they want to pay him 3 mil and commit to 2 more years.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 21, 2010 3:19 PM EST up reply actions
Gentlemen:
If your replies really are to me (which I have to expect given the indent/nesting) then: Context is important. Really.
My reply was strictly to Ryan and his clear the crease comment regarding Sourary.
And I’ll stand by the comment – if they want Rozsival and Kotalik for Souray – I’m there. How they fit it under the cap is their issue, not yours/mine/ours.
Now – before we all get our shorts in a knot – the REALITY is quite as you’ve described. The likelihood of this is infinitesimally small.
So tell me – if they offered up this deal – would YOU turn it down?? And if so, WHY?
they would never offer this deal, their goal is to rebuild and retool, they may be ok with Rozsival if only because of Renney’s influence, but Kotalik as well? Forget about it.
The Rangers don’t need another aged, expensive, defenseman. I’d rather have him than Rozy but the Rangers would likely have to give up a prospect and a pick.
No thnaks.

Please make it so...
He was a $9 million mistake. Great shot, nothing else. Let Voros stay in the lineup on the 4th line—he’s looked good since he was given an opportunity.
The vibe in the last two games has been that of the relentless Tortorella style that makes his teams hard to play against. It’s taken awhile, but this team is starting to find an identity.
i called this a couple days ago that they would make him so upset he would go to the KHL. i would rather trade him so it wouldnt matter if he came back, but just to save 3 mil the next two years is something to celebrate.

Ana dont see them buying
Cbj we know Hitch and eastern european players
Det doesnt really fit their mold
Chi no need
Min has space and could use O
if sather can get this done it would be a late holiday gift though i fear what he would take back.
LA is going to leave themselves room for Kovalchuk.
Minnesota just dumped Sykora…can’t see them taking on Kotalik.
You left out Colorado and St. Louis. But they’re no’s anyway.
That leaves two:
Nashville – league bottom PP and tons of cap space.
Calgary – Phaneuf is rumored out, but he’s got a huge contract, much longer than Rozi’s. But if you can trade something like Rozi, Kotalik and Sangs for Phaneuf, I think you do it. (though the Avery factor probably says no to that).
Maybe we can trade Kotalik to Calgary for Dawes, Sjostrom and/or Lundmark.

I dont know if it’s me, but I kinda find it ironic that any of these Czech players would want to defect to Russia. It’s weird to see a patriotic guy like Jagr that chose his number, 68, as a tribute to the oppression his people suffered at the hands of the Russians now playing in front of those very same people night in and night out…and still wearing his #68 to boot.
But I digress. GOOD RIDDANCE ALES. Hopefully he has room in his suit case for his buddy Roszival!

lets see
If I can give you the short version.
Cap hit is 2M. He’s got underrated offensive ability, but is really above-average one-on-one defending. When he makes a mistake, its really, really bad, but it doesn’t happen often. The thing about Hamhuis is you rarely notice him on the ice, which for a defenseman is good. The problems he’s had this year are attributed to his partner, Kevin Klein— the two mix like oil and water. My only complaint with Trotz this year has been his refusal to break up that pair.
A lot of media around the league think he could get Shea Weber/Ryan Suter money. He’s capable of top-pair performance and minutes, but is the odd-man out in Nashville thanks to our other two superstar D-men. If I had to describe him in a sentence, I’d say he’s a cross between Weber and Suter skill-wise. Good at moving the puck, solid hitter, and has a vicious hip check.

no way in Hades
Poile takes Roszival. Sorry, but no.
We have so many young, talented defensemen in the system its a little sad. Jonathan Blum, Teemu Laakso, Ryan Ellis, and on and on. Not taking a guy that high salaried when we can use a guy trained to play Pred hockey who will be just as effective at 1/6 cost as Roszival.
And that doesn’t even address the Ryan Jones addition. The player the Predators REALLY need of the Rangers is Vinny Prospal. But thats another conversation…

He is 2nd on the team in PP points with 16. And they’re 19.5% this year instead of the 13.9% they were last year. He helped some.
Yes I’m aware he has 3PP points in his last 25 after 13 in his first 19. Despite that slump, his 4.32 pts/60 on the PP would still instantly make him #1 on Nashville.
I agree with you about Hamhuis >>> Kotalik, but to say Kotalik did nothing for the PP is overstating.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jan 21, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions
Kotalik disappearing is not the cause of the powerplay disappearing, but yes, there is correlation between the two. I believe Kotalik’s presence on the powerplay was over rated. Any shooter suffices there.
Nashville can’t afford Hamhuis, at what is probably going to be $3.5 million. I highly doubt they will be able to afford Kotalik at $3 million.
by Dave Shapiro on Jan 21, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions
I’ve only been looking at cap space, and Nashville has a fuckton of it. But if they can’t pay the players, that’s another story entirely. So yeah, there is that.
And the point play as a whole is the main reason the reason the PP disappeared (they’re still at 16.6% over the last 31, bad, but not awful). Callahan and Gaborik’s production has been steady, but MDZ only has 6 in the last 31 after 9 in his first 19. The combination of the two is what’s likely they cause.
If you don’t have a shot threat at the point, the PK collapses and creates problems, and since MDZ doesn’t shoot consistently, it’s on the other point player. If it ain’t Kotalik, it’s been a problem. Yes any shooter would suffice, but the Rangers don’t currently have many shooters.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jan 21, 2010 12:14 PM EST up reply actions
I think it’s a matter of them not being able to afford to pay the players, and not about cap room.
The issue should be getting the players currently on the roster (I’m not counting Kotalik at this point) to shoot. MDZ needs to shoot more. Put Rozsival there and tell him that if he doesn’t shoot (guy has a friggin cannon) then you’re going to kill a kitten.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d do that trade in a heartbeat. But I’m trying to think of it from Poile’s perspective.
by Dave Shapiro on Jan 21, 2010 11:46 AM EST up reply actions
few things
1) You may not realize just how bad our power play has been at some points. Can hardly enter the zone, and then one of the point guys botches a drop pass and we have to start all over. We’ve played Steve Sullivan at the point for long stretches, its been that bad.
2) The ownership has a self-imposed cap due to some financial restraints. I don’t think the $ difference between Kotalik and Hamhuis would matter because Kotalik is already signed, and plus Hamhuis is the 3rd wheel on the bike—1st pair D-man on a team that has probably the 2nd best pairing in the league.
3) Hamhuis is the guy on the PK who constantly flips the puck out of the zone. That said, he’s not that great of a shot blocker. I rarely see him go down.
4) You’d probably be surprised at his offensive acumen, he just assumes a different role here because Weber (and Suter) is an absolute machine in the offensive zone.

I don’t watch the Preds, I didn’t order NHL Center Ice (I’m barely home enough to watch Ranger games). If you’re having trouble entering the zone, it sounds like you need a puck carrier, not a shot-producer from the point. Kotalik did not bring the puck into the zone. That’s Gaborik’s and MDZ’s job.
I assumed it was a self-imposed cap, I mean, you have about $15 million in cap room. I figure ownership has roughly a $45 million cap on player salaries.
The Rangers PK is just fine, I’m more concerned about Redden as a whole than Hamhuis’ ability to block shots. Dubi, Drury and Cally do a fine job at that.
And to address the comment below, if Nashville ownership can afford to trade for Kotalik, I would assume that a trade of Hamhuis for Kotalik +4th or 5th would work?

Then I think long and hard about pulling the trigger on a Hamhuis for Kotalik/pick or prospect.
But, knowing DP like I do, he won’t do it. At the end of the day, I don’t think Kotalik plays “Predator Hockey” like a Patric Hornqvist or a Ryan Callahan does.

maybe he wants higgins then who plays hard but just cant seem to finish, wont help the pp though. swapping expiring deals could be good for both, while i would much rather deal kots as a ranger fan to eliminate the last 2 years of his deal

in fairness
Value for value (not money wise) Poile may want one other thing. I think Hamhuis is probably slightly more valued league wide than AK.

If Kotalik leaves, who is going to give up the breakaways on the power play?

To be fair…Those are only the power plays when he’s not in the penalty box for hooking

He seems so uncomfortable with the puck on his stick on the point. That used to be his bread and butter but the minute that Torts starting taking away his ice time he completely fell to shit.
