Rangers Recap: Montreal scores more goals than 0, Rangers lose
So much for that outburst of offense eh? The Rangers have now been shutout in 4 of their last 7 games, and scored 14 of their 15 goals during that span in two games (they only had one against St. Louis). Montreal scored one goal in the first period, and never looked back, rolling over the Rangers for a 6-0 defeat.
The second period--which becomes inconsequential since they scored once in the first--was an offensive explosion for Montreal, which saw them score four consecutive goals; three in less than four minutes. In what seems to be the theme at the Bell Center in Montreal, Henrik Lundqvist played a great game and was still chased after giving up four goals. The defense didn't exist, the offense didn't exist and the coach apparently didn't recognize that his team was getting obliterated on both ends of the ice.
The end result of the three Montreal goals in four minutes was the entrance of Matt Zaba, who took a stick tap by Lundqvist on his way to the net in which Lundqvist was probably saying "sorry pal but you get to deal with this crap now."
The third period was just 20 more minutes for the Rangers to embarrass themselves, and don't worry they did. Aside from bailing out on Zaba multiple times (hey, they had to break him in sometime!) the offense continued its poor play; and aside from an Aaron Voros fight the period was pretty lackluster.
Zaba only got lit up twice--once on a 5 on 3--but actually played a really strong game against a clicking offense. It's good to see that when Lundqvist inevitable asks for a trade we will have some viable assets to take his place. Zaba kept the score from being too out of hand--surprising I know--but the score could have easily been nine or 10 nothing.
Empty Netters:
- How Glen Sather has let this entire season pass without getting some form of secondary scoring is beyond me. John Tortorella has changed the lines 12 thousand times, he has mixed up the power play combinations daily and he has moved the third man on the first line more times than we can count. Nothing has turned into goals, nothing has turned into offense and aside from the first eight games this season has been a disaster.
- The referees sucked tonight, as they usually do in Montreal.
- Sam and Joe can talk about the Rangers "needing some life" all they want, but the most life I have seen out of the Rangers consistantly is Tortorella's bouts with Larry Brooks and the media.
- Maybe the Rangers brass should save the Blueshirts United promotions for better games. Maybe it's just me but Sam saying "Blueshirts United, the only place for real Ranger fans! You get to go to exclusive events and even get choice seats for big games." doesn't seem as flashy when the Rangers are getting crushed 6-0. But what do I know.
- Props to Voros by the way who actually defended Gaborik after he was getting knocked around by Andrei Markov.
Now I have not seen the post-game interviews with the players but lemme guess what they are gonna say: "We came out to play we just didn't get the result we wanted." "It's disappointing, sure, but we need to come out ready to play." "The goals just weren't there for us tonight, I can't explain it, we just need to come out better next time." God it's disgusting, what a disgrace. Have at it!

Midway through the second I decided that if the Rangers got shutout again (two back-to-back shutouts sandwiching a 14-goal outburst, are you kidding me with this shit?) I’d take a break and spend my game-nights doing something more constructive. See y’all after the Olympics break.

i shut it off in the 3rd
I normally watch win or lose but tonight made me feel a bit queezy. We need to keep what works and get rid of what doesn’t. Zherdev and atropov would have netted us 50 goals and sather took gambles on guys who might do that like higgens, koty ect ect. Its that simple. And trading up should be the number one priority, because its obvious we just need better players than what we have right now. Maybe its time to do a story Joe on who we should want to keep at this point in the season and who we should try to unload.

Damn...
I think I pleaded with them to save some of those 8 goals for the following games…
I don’t think the problem is secondary scoring…its PRIMARY scoring.
They have Gaborik…and a ton of overachieving 3rd line players.
I’m just gonna throw this out there…but if there was someway possible to get someone like Lecavalier…I’m down.
I know it probably costs Dubi or Cally…but, well..they aren’t in his league and Lecavalier and Gaborik probably could spark a bit more offense more consistently instead of them all shooting their load in one game.
Maybe this really is a situation where Sather needs to stop pulling his pork and make something happen…

Every one of you who defended Torts vs. Brooks the other night after Philly. This team sucks, this coach sucks, and I applaud Larry Brooks for being a total ass – for whatever reason, invalid or not – following each and every debacle this season. We are in total meltdown fellas – and it starts at the top. Believe me, I want to blame Sather more than anyone, but regardless – this coach has lost his players – all of them. And he deserves to be run right the hell out of town. I hate it cuz I love his fire, but Torts is done. D-O-N-E. Pathetic. Totally pathetic.

ummm
i don’t blame torts at all. he’s doing what he can. are you really trying to say that if we had a different coach the results would be different? the problem here is on the ice. i’m tired of analyzing the rangers at this point. its a waste of time. i totally phased out in the middle of the second…sometimes when your team is down, you still hold out hope for a goal or two to save face. not with this team…actually, about ten minutes into the game i just knew they were in that zombie mode. they run all over the place but can’t keep the puck in the zone…all these useless turnovers around the circles after having won the battles in the corner. that’s what i don’t understand…that’s why we keep saying, “they played with xxxx but just lost” they win a lot of the battles and then just trickle-turnover and then need to reestablish themselves. really, boring, pretty pathetic at this point.
its time to unload some of this crew. please, either change the lineup or put us out of our misery. blockout the games, something.

Maybe if we give sather another 10 years he can draft a pure goal scorer and playmaker.
I’m going to rant to make this painful loss go away….
Rather than trading and overpaying players in the off season in hopes to fill the void this team has. My question since some of you guys cover what we have in our system and think sather has drafted well. do we have the players that can surround Lundquist and Gaborik in our system or do we need a miracle trade to fill this 2 season scoring slump this team is on. what is the best way to fill the top two lines? Is Dubinsky or Callahan second or third line players. we also need physical players that are effective scorers and checkers that can stand up and protect Gaborik when he on the ice. I see more problems than solutions at this point. The d that we drafted do any of them have a pair?
Those teams in the early 90’s had the right formula. they had scoring with amonte graves messier kovalev verbeek gartner zubov leetch nemchinov weight and they were well equipped to handle Philly when they chose to play tough and could hang with a pond hockey team like the Canadians. It was a culture Messier Graves and Buekeboom instilled in the team if your better players that you depend on got roughed up you had to answer the bell. they also could handle this Canadian team by playing smart hockey in the d end and physical with them in their own end when it seemed like the team needed a spark. Aside from those Messier Ranger teams management always seem to be a victim in regards to having their star players being pushed around. Gaborik really needs to have a player that he can play with that can take some physical workload off him. Teams are starting to play him tough and he is left alone having to deal with it. Its nice Voros came over after the fact, but he is not skilled enough to be his line mate when stuff goes down like it did against philly. He is going to get hurt with these players taking extra shots at him, and you think this team can’t score with him in the lineup. gaborik slump is now really effecting this teams offense.
How many times has Lundquist been run over this year with no answer, I bet we are in double digits. you thought are d was bad then wait until Lundquist get injured on one of these players crashing the net.
I like the spunk we’ve shown the last couple of games but it is not from us engaging the other teams star players but having to respond to other teams taking shots at us. we seem to do be coming up on the short end with the officials calling power plays against us when we’re not defending each other and the score sheet because this team has to many victims and not enough leadership and toughness to say I got your back we take care of one another. when you play like that you get a good bounce.
Lack of scoring also helps you become victims because now the other teams know they can take an extra penalty to get at lundquist and Gaborik because chances are you won’t make us pay on the scoresheet anyway.
This team has way to many needs to think this will be better next year
And I’ve lost all respect for dan giradi
alright i’m done

Show Some Sack
Living in Chicago as a Ranger fan is embarrassing when you compare the Blackhawks to the Rangers. The Hawks have young, skilled palyers who are talented and improving and play with desire and fire. The Rangers unfortunately have become a JOKE. They dont stand up and protect their best players- Lundquist and Gaborik. Their overpaid veterans look like they are punching a clock- Roszival, Drury, Redden, Prospal, Higgins.
while lacking heart the real issue is a true lack of talent. The team needs to jettison the dead wieght and get younger and hungrier. It looks like even Callahan is getting tired of being the only one willing to take the body.
We’ll take a 2 year rebuilding process if we at least see players who are giving it their all. Please, pretty please??
by RangerFanInChicago on Jan 24, 2010 12:24 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Joe. Do you actually think Lundqvist will ask for a trade? Not that I’m disagreeing with you, but that will be the day I might stop being a Rangers fan, and become a fan of whatever team he plays on.
Man, to think if he actually played on a good team he’d get 40 wins in a season. Heck, 48 isn’t a record until Lundqvist beats it. At least he’ll get 30 wins this year. Once that happens, call it quits.
But, I love being a Rangers fan. Everyone is happy when the team plays well. One loss, they suck. Two losses, fire the coach, the gm, and trade all players that aren’t of Lundqvist quality. Three losses, contemplate suicide. Yep. Life is fun.

IMO
I think Joe might be wrong Hank wont ask for a trade, he is a Proud man & a Proud Ranger, but I will agree if it keeps up like this I just don’t know. I live in Utah so I had to watch the CBC broadcast, so I didn’t have to listen to Sam & Joe say the same old crap. I did watch the HNL show on MSG after the game and all the guys said the same thing " All a coach has to do is tell his players to stay close & shut down Gabby, and you will win the game" I think that getting Lecavalier is not the answer because he would be on a line with Gabby so if you shut that line down you can still win, not to mention his “cost”. We would be better bringing up Wolf packers who would at least compete while losing. As a True fan I disagree with a lot of you about getting rid of Torts, this isn’t his fault it’s the players he has to work with. We are all fans and most of us are die hard, so we will continue to complain but also continue to watch the team no matter what. I understand the need too vent, but saying the same stuff over & over ( fire sather, fire torts, hire mess, hire keenen etc…) doesn’t do anything. We will always pay to watch, pay for merchandise, and scream our lungs out at the garden.

There are just too many players on this team that have no fire in the belly and are like automatons. You can see it on the ice and you can see it in the interviews – no enthusiasm, like their just punching the clock. Girardi, Drury, Staal, even Dubinsky. It’s pathetic.
There’s just something missing with too many of these guys and it makes them really hard to root for. I really feel bad for Avery, Lundqvist, Callahan, Gaborik, guys who obviously care and get no support.

Two words this team needs to learn, well maybe 1 they need to learn cause the other they do in plenty of games. TANK and SELL. We all have seen them tank many games with no effort and tonight wasnt even the worst of those type of performances, but this team needs to sell anything it can and tank the year instead of this BS where they struggling to finish 6-10 in the East, maybe get in and lose in the 1st round. Tank it, get a really high pick, a stud player and start adding some top of the line talent to players like Lundy, Gabby, Staal. We have a bunch of 3rd line players whether people want to admit it, Dubi and AA probably being the most likely to exceed that cause they at least have 2nd line talent.
Right now this team is 7th in the conference, 3 pts ahead of 13th. Ironically enough they are also 3 pts ahead of the 5th worst record in the league. There are 12 teams that have between 52 and 55 pts right now and if the Rangers do what they should and admit this team wont do anything this year and like the other Snowbirds head south for the winter we might actually get some changes around here and some hope for real contention in the future.
Guys to deal:
Prospal: should net at least a 2nd and a 4th…prime team to target is Boston who has 2 1st, 3 2nds this year.
Girardi: maybe nets a 3-4. Maloney might want him in PHX as they are always said to want a “vet.”
Higgins: This is the guy i think Calgary might be targeting cause he plays Sutter hockey, but he hasnt scored here. Though if they can make Dawes into a 10g 25 pt guy in 50 games, Higgins could fit. anything is a bonus return.
Kotalik: we all know he is gone, as long as no contract past this year comes back it is a win.
Gilroy: this one might be controversial cause he is a rookie and people love his upside, but i think he is more a 3rd line forward than a d-man at this level and to get 1.75 mil off the cap next year i would sell for value if i was offered it.
Rozi: doubt that anyone would want him cause of his cap hit, but sell if you can.
This list is probably the greatest testimony to how uncompetitive this team would be in the playoffs because outside of Lundy, Gabby, Staal, MDZ, AA, Dubi, Cally (on the nhl roster) other than Prospal, Gilroy and Girardi that anyone else would really want to deal for.
The pipeline has talent in it lead by Stepan, Grachev, McDonagh with players like Werek, Kreider, Bourque, Horak further away and if dumping some of this crap, tanking this year will add more picks and higher picks then we need to do it. besides i am tired of making the playoffs so dolan gets more revenue, raises tickets again and we still show up like sheep to be a 6-8 team and lose in round 1. if tanking worked for pitt, chi, was, nyi then it’s time to try something new cause this shit aint working.
The problem is Sather probably thinks if he misses the playoffs he might actually get fired so the sell wont happen and we will buy shit that might get us in, sell prospects or draft picks, maybe take on more cap crap just to sneak in and lose early while lowering our picks. Oh and if Dolan does finally fire Sather, i love Mess for what he did bringing the Cup in 94, but he CANNOT be Sather’s replacement because he wont clean up Sather’s mess.

Congrats on another pathetic loss
Every time I start to have the slightest touch of faith in the Rangers, they pull the rug out and leave me on my ass. I dont even know what to make of such a mercurial team. It would be one thing if they played hard every night and just couldnt finish, but they dont. I wish I had a nicer word for it, but for the most part, they just look like sloppy dog shit on skates.

What Next?
I’ve read the post and alot of good points and ideas have been raised. Problem is that the Rangers will keep going the way thay have and end up with a 8 seed. We then get bumped in 4 or 5 in the first round and get a poor pick in the draft.

tell you what ...
I’m not a big fan of tanking, but … looking at things, the only way Chicago got good is by being absolute crap for a few years in a row. Same with Pittsburgh. Now those teams seem to be set up for Cup runs for about a decade. It might not be a bad idea organizationally at this point. To get a stud or two is the only way to truly build a strong team for long durations. Since the cap keeps teams who have cash to spend from spending it, building a team from FA signings is virtually impossible. As we have seen, all that does is get you into the playoffs (barely) and gives owners reason to raise prices. Which is the ultimate goal of any business, really. Which is why Sather will not be fired, he makes Jimmy “Sexual Harrassment” Dolan lots of $$$$. Considering that drafting an 18 year old who isn’t a top stud is a crapshoot at best, the more picks you have the better the odds of getting someone decent out of the non-stud pool.
Redden should be asked to renegotiate his deal, and if he refuses. be demoted, like Kasparaitis was. Its not that he’s been so terrible, but his contract could be used for something so much better. I’d also try to sell/trade Rosy too. I like his game when he’s motivated, but he has a lot of off-nights. Drury too. Heart and soul guy, plays hard, but is way overpaid. In Drury’s case i’d wait until the end of the season, then give him the same deal as Redden, renegotiate or be traded/demoted. But if one of those three’s salary could be immediately re-invested in some better players, this team should try it. If for no other reason than to solidify their 8th seed. [/sarcasm]
Some games, the Rangers look great, many games they look average, some games they are terrible. Consistency is something this team does not have.

Trade for Vinnie Lecavalier
Im for unloading this season and( not rebuilding so to speak )but starting off fresh next year. I say go after Lecavalier, i would love to get into that because even though looking ahead we have alot to look forward to after this season and beyond.. (end season free agents Kovalchuk, Jokinen, Demitra, Holmstrom, Gonchar, Marleau, Setaguchi and Lidstrom.) Now if Sather doesnt want any of them we can go trade for Vinny. My point is look to trade Rozy, Kotalik, Prospal, Anisimov and a 1st round pick in 2011 for Vinny Lecavalier and get moving on next season. Since the Lightning are going no where fast and Torts utilized his skills the best, i see this as win-win. For the Lightning the good part about this is that they get rid of an under acheiving player killing there cap and recieve another underacheiver whose contract in comparison to Vinnies is finished much quicker. We on the other hand get to worry about about …god forbid Lecavalier decides to make his best Chris Drury impression and suck for the last 9 years of his contract… then we made a big boo-boo but i say lets do it… Whats the worst that can happen?
